Our Sunday morning treat is to have croissants for breakfast and pretend we are back on holiday on Isle de Re. But I often wonder if we eat them the correct way. I know some of you live in France so can you enlighten me and tell me how you eat your croissants.

Plain. With coffee.
I know the French dunk theirs into bowls of hot chocolate or milky coffee and think the English are barbarous to have them with butter and jam.
But they think we're barbarous anyway in matters of food. (Apart from food they quite admire le style Anglais.)

Fresh from the local baker, eaten out on the balcony, accompanied by coffee and a view of the Med. Oh how I miss holidays...

Pick it up in your fingers, take it to your mouth, bite, chew, enjoy.

My husband heats his in the air fryer then just eats them naked……..the croissant not the husband

My son shares a house with a French student at Uni. She says you simply eat it...no butter, jam or anything. Just the plain item...but I'll stick with butter and apricot

Sounds good.?

Having to depend on food deliveries I haven’t had a decent croissant for a long time. Years ago I used to make my own (and Danish pastries). Just eat with jam. They have enough butter in them already.

It always annoys me a little when posters criticise the topic. notright this is. A lighthearted thread. We all know that when in your own home you can do as you please but it is sometimes good to k ow the correct way so as not to look a bit daft in company.

Sorry about typos, am sitting out in the sun and can't see the screen ?

Why would anyone eat croissants for breakfast - much prefer the Italian way - fruit, cereals, ham, cheese, jam, toast and rolls, finished off with a slice of cake.

You can have can have bacon, or an omelet if you prefer a hot breakfast.

That's not to like.

Slice then butter and marmalade,so delicious !

The 'correct' way if we are assuming the correct way is the place of origin, and assuming they are plain croissants, is dipped in a BOWL of milky coffee or hot chocolate. My way, even when I lived in Paris was with salty butter and jam, but just a mouthful at a time.

Actually I wish I hadn't seen this thread, all I can think of now is croissants but can't get any. Grrrrr!

Torn into chunks and Smothered in apricot jam. Rarely eat them as they are not good for my cholesterol.

I warm my croissant and then tear them, each piece being jammed as I go. I don’t bother with butter as they are full of butter anyway. Always eaten with Taylor’s Lazy Sunday coffee.

As others have said, they are perfect with apricot jam but I make jam and buy the nice stuff too so I can attest that they are good with many different flavours.

Everyday- just....everyday!!

Split lengthwise then Crosta & Mollica Italian Peach Conserve spread onto bottom half, close and eat. Total bliss! Good cup of milky coffee to go with it.
Both these just a weekly treat as rather calorific!smile

Scrambled eggs in them are really nice

Chewbacca Mon 14-Jun-21 19:30:57

Warm croissants, spread with apricot jam and topped with thinly sliced fresh mango, served with espresso coffee. There's only one rule: they're not for sharing. wink

Aveline Mon 14-Jun-21 19:34:27

What happens if you don't eat them the 'correct' way?

Off to the guillotine!
(Joke.)

I can highly recommend Waitrose frozen croissants, pain au chocolat and viennoiserie as the real deal, one would find in France, compared to anything I have shop bought in the UK.

Bon Maman apricot conserve/dunking chunks in espresso are my choices.

Red lights flash and a warning klaxon goes off in Croissant Etiquette Headquarters and they send out an army of men, dressed in Breton tops and carrying strings of onions and garlic. They seize all your croissants unless you volunteer to attend the Croissant Eating Academy! Everyone knows that.
