What are your stories and anecdotes about the current shortage on some shelves?

What sort of privilege is it that someone can say that unplanned absence of food in the shops is just a bit of an inconvenience and it's ok because no-one will starve?

"Let them eat quinoa", I suppose.

GillT57 and how condescending are YOU? I am sure we can all manage with slightly less choice if short term shortages are happening in our area.. Nobody is going to starve - as Gill said, we have been spoiled for choice in recent years, for the sake of our planet its time we learnt to deal with less choice.

No issues here in Bristol in my local Co-op, Tesco Express and Sainsburys online.

All good here (South Leicestershire + Warwickshire).
I shop in both counties!

Aldi and Sainsbury’s in Kent have bare shelves. Apparently it’s to do with foreign drivers and visas !

No fizzy water for nearly a month now in both my major supermarkets. Also very surprised to see the lack of nuts in Lidl today. Always admire their vast range and stock. Only walnuts to be had. See quite a few shelf spaces as I wander round but the commodity missing doesn't register unless it's something I'm looking for. Interesting times indeed.

I wonder what the Venn diagram of Leave Voters and people who don't care about others' problems looks like?

I don’t buy bottled water. But noticed in Tesco there was almost none on shelves. Assume it was supply problem. Elsewhere in shop, all looked absolutely fine.

Is it scaremongering merely to acknowledge the re-stocking issues that supermarkets are experiencing?

I live in a town with 4 small supermarkets, one of which is a Lidl. My clients are mostly on very limited incomes and for them the lack of choice is a real cause for concern. They don’t have well stocked store cupboards and tend to live hand to mouth, so shortages in Waitrose won’t affect them at all as they can’t afford to shop there, but if the shelves in the local Lidl are empty (as I saw for myself that they were), the cost implications of having to buy elsewhere or buy different brands than usual, can be very worrying for them.

All good here in the west midlands, not had issues getting hold of anything

Lots of gaps here in sleepy Bedfordshire, so having to be inventive with the meal planning! Seems to be the same things that disappeared pre-lockdown 1 - pasta, rice, loo roll, water and bottled drinks.

REM low in fresh fruit Raspberries and Strawberries in Waitrose as well as bread and cat food

When I was a kid I ate snails from the hedge

Damn - I knew I shouldn't have used slug pellets, really don't think our snails would be safe to eat grin

Doesn’t all this highlight just how fussy we have become with our food now we have become completely accustomed to large supermarkets giving us such a huge selection of everything?

Take for instance bread and milk. We are so used to there being dozens of variations of those two basic simple food items, so if we are presented with even a slightly limited selection we feel shortchanged.

Nobody will go hungry, despite the endless scaremongering going on.
We only have to look around us to see that food shortages would actually be beneficial to an increasing number of people.

How condescending and judgemental are you!

Cod in Butter Sauce AWOL for several weeks at our Sainsbury’s - I’m desolate - with creamy mash and peas creamy mash it’s genuine comfort food. Up there with home made rice pudding or bread and butter pudding

Silvertwigs Wed 11-Aug-21 17:35:38

No milk in Tesco tonight!

SueDonim Wed 11-Aug-21 17:34:20

My small Coop today had a sign today apologising for shortages but the only shelf that seemed to be empty was one with a promotion for cheap crisps.

CarrieAnn Wed 11-Aug-21 17:11:11

No cauliflower or broccoli, no bread,no green beans at our local Asda,Iceland Co op,Spar,Nisa or Morrisons this weekend, there were several items missing from my last order from Asda but I can't remember them all

Bea0802 Wed 11-Aug-21 17:06:57

Shortages are to do with people isolating. Products are not being produced in the quantities they usually supply. Hopefully will be normal soon.

Polarbear2 Wed 11-Aug-21 17:00:44

I guess a thought here is what’s happening to all the food that’s not being delivered? Is it being thrown away?
