What are your stories and anecdotes about the current shortage on some shelves?

Am living in France (never hid the fact!)and the only reason some fruit and vegs are in short supply and more expensive is due to the dreadful spring we had.
And due to Brexit and only Brexit, M&S’s shelves are empty in Paris!

^I so wish that the ‘scare-mongers’ would stop saying there will be shortages.^

I get really annoyed by scaremongers in all things.

There is no milk to be had in my town of about 12,000 people, although we have 4 supermarkets. I hope I'm sure it will get delivered this afternoon so I'll have to go off round the shops again looking for it. Foraging for basis foodstuffs is not exactly how I'd envisaged spending my retirement.

Hooray! The milk fairy came wink

Crisps, biscuits and cat food shelves where empty in our local Sainsburys in West Berks on Saturday. Cat food has been iffy for a while so I order all my pet food on line (and it works out cheaper).

CrazyGrandma2 Wed 11-Aug-21 13:09:00

Lots of gaps in Sainsburys today and also lots of foodstuffs with short use by dates. I usually do my weekly shop online and cannot remember the last time they had everything I'd ordered. Also gaps in the local coop. I was told there was a real problem with tea and water! I'm in Kent.

So glad I didn't mention it was Waitrose we went to last Friday.
It was the first visit to an actual store in 19 months!!

I did moan about the avocados - hope no-one heard me.

I notice that the placeholder example text for Tesco picker notes is now

pick only ripe avocados please

Years ago it was

I want green bananas

Some readers might like to know that Tesco at present has good discounts on lots of pens and other stuff

There was no ready prepared crunchy salad, and 4 pint Tesco semi- skimmed milk, and frozen it fresh broccoli, I have been forced to buy iceberg lettuce and peel off the leaves myself ( and the lettuce will sit there in the fridge looking very self righteous all week)!!! And buy Cravendale milk ( which always slightly annoys me as it is 2 litres rather than 4 pints and I feel slightly short changed!). And forget about making broccoli and stiton soup, a lovely fatty but healthy accompaniment to salad, but I'll survive, I'm sure!!!!

I have shopped in Asda in London and Dover and Aldi in Dover over the past few days, and the shelves were all well stocked.

Treetops05 Wed 11-Aug-21 12:59:53

Empty shelves in Newton Abbot, Devon and has been for many weeks. Difficult when my FinL will only eat certain makes and brands.

Newgran59 Wed 11-Aug-21 12:53:02

Down here in West Sussex I cannot get sparkling water and gaps in Tesco veg supplies for several weeks now.

JaneJudge Wed 11-Aug-21 12:41:39

Those of you having problems with milk, could you get a milkman? I wouldn't be without mine. He delivers me a vegetable box too and bread/butter. It comes at 11pm at night but my husband is generally up to get it in and my dog even ignores him now.

Wanna? What word is this?? Have a go? ?
My, you are defensive Alegrias the mere word Scotland seems to set you off.

Alegrias1 Wed 11-Aug-21 12:31:41

Empty shelves in rural Mid Wales

Wanna have a go at the Welsh too Lemongrove?

Or the Northern Irish? Alioop Wed 11-Aug-21 11:44:16

Mind you, Brexit's done for them already...what japes.

lemongrove Wed 11-Aug-21 12:28:01

Aleg and Hooty looks like Scotland has more empty shelves than here then.
Look on the bright side ( foraging!?) it’s all good exercise.

3nanny6 Wed 11-Aug-21 12:27:24

I seen the chiller empty of milk in small Tesco I like the skimmed milk and they had a few pints of that which I bought, many people were complaining.
Quite a few gaps on Sainsburys fresh fruit and veg shelves also fresh chicken was low and baked beans shelves looking empty.

Price increases on a lot of items and could not believe how much the price has increased on many biscuit packets.

Sheilasue Wed 11-Aug-21 12:26:04

Yes have noticed a few gaps. As I shop on line that’s been ok just substitutions but if I go to Sainsbury’s to pick up a few bits they have a few empty shelves not to bad. Hoping that we don’t get people bulk buying.

plenty of empty shelves around here
I suppose it depends on where you live

Nanatoone Wed 11-Aug-21 12:14:29

Lots of empty shelves in Swindon supermarkets. Marks is fine though. Asda looks like a plague of locusts hit it every day

HootyMcOwlface Wed 11-Aug-21 12:13:47

I work in a supermarket and our deliveries aren’t coming or are late. No bread yesterday, shelves empty. They can only send every other day instead of every day and it didn’t even turn up!

Fruit and veg orders not being fulfilled, only getting about two thirds of our orders if that. Frozen foods same - freezers getting emptier with nowt to restock! Hardly any cat food left either!

Aepgirl Wed 11-Aug-21 12:12:11

No, no evidence of shortages here.I so wish that the ‘scare-mongers’ would stop saying there will be shortages. This just encourages panic buying.

Alegrias1 Wed 11-Aug-21 11:54:56

Its fine, its fine. Nobody will starve!!

Any food shortages are a result of the haulage driver shortage due to Covid ‘pinging’

Nope. (RHA Survey)

bear1 Wed 11-Aug-21 11:53:42

noticed last week in Tesco there were some of the freezers empty of goods but rest of store seemed to have normal stock level's

lemongrove Wed 11-Aug-21 11:51:05

I agree The OddBird in fact I think hoarding is already happening.
I had an Ocado delivery yesterday, all there, no substitutions and the small store round the corner seems well stocked.

lemongrove Wed 11-Aug-21 11:48:50

Casdon I generally do have an optimistic view of things, and I find on here it nicely balances out the woe, woe and thrice woe brigade.
Any food shortages are a result of the haulage driver shortage due to Covid ‘pinging’, certain Brexit regulations and perhaps some EU drivers going back to country of origin due to the pandemic. It won’t last forever and nobody will go hungry.
The cat food shortage is due to other reasons entirely.
It may be annoying to find you can’t get exactly the item you want, but that’s all.It does seem to be certain areas and stores too.
