What are your stories and anecdotes about the current shortage on some shelves?

Ilovecheese Tue 10-Aug-21 11:26:47

Our local co-op has empty shelves with apology notices.
There were no crisps on the shelves which didn't matter to us but I suppose it is because they take up so much room in the lorries.
More of a nuisance is the lack of fruit and veg.

The local Marks and Spencer, on the other hand, has no shortages at all.

If they did deliver what would the neighbours think if they saw a Lidl van outside your house?
Goodness me! What would the neighbours think

I've just seen an Asda van trying to turn round outside, negotiating its way around a Waitrose van and our builders' van!
We get all sorts round here grin

jaylucy Tue 10-Aug-21 11:22:00

I haven't been in our Asda since the beginning of lockdown as we have been having click and collect so can only say that there hasn't been one week that we have had a complete order delivered and most weeks have had to change our order to take account of the out of stock items.
My neighbours have said that they have most weeks had to go to more than one place to get what they need.
I have noticed how the prices have jumped up over the last week or so too.

Why do people keep wittering about Switzerland? Is it part of the subtle Toblerone infiltration branch of GN

Eviebeanz Tue 10-Aug-21 11:16:42

Oops I'm in Essex

Eviebeanz Tue 10-Aug-21 11:16:14

Our local co-op has a sign up apologising for any potential shortages, but didn't appear to be anything missing from shelves. Have noticed shortages in several stores and on line shop of water, but not something that's a big deal -husband says he misses bottled water so refilled empty bottle from tap.

Calistemon Mr. B. goes to Lidl and delivers the shopping back to me grin

Oh sorry I missed that Gransnet rule I didnt realise we had to post where we lived. DlSo does everyone do that. Are people living in other countries not allowed to ask questions. Perhaps people need to wrote a list of these rules so people know what is going on.

Yesterday monthly Aldi click and collect all good, only one sub.
instead of low plain fat crisps...
Pomme bears grin.

Our local food markets and farm shops are full of lovely fresh produce.

We have new fruit and veg shop in the village opened a couple of months ago, shelves all full.

Local butchers trading as normal.

Local Chemist does not seem to be experiencing any problems at the moment and have good supply of over the counter medications.

Home bargains etc all shelves full including toilet paper!

My only issue is all that the Clark shoe shops local to us are closed.
However last year, I purchased Clarke's own foot measure , so still able to measure grandchildren feet and order from Clark's outlet online. ?

Blossoming we always shopped at Lidl on our way to Waitrose but unfortunately Lidl don't deliver and we've been having grocery deliveries for months.

We did manage to get there the other week though, the best nectarines and chocolate - and they had Sauvignon Blanc!

Callistemon Tue 10-Aug-21 11:06:26

I hope so too, anna7

We are fortunate to live within easy reach of a few excellent farm shops. We get locally produced cheese, eggs, meat, milk, salad and veg from local farm shops and bread (plus some naughty cakes and pies) from the small family-run bakery about a mile from our house. Rice, pasta, porridge oats, dry and canned goods, herbs and spices from Lidl (I’m not as posh as some Grans). There are a few lovely delis in the city centre that I visit occasionally. Not been able to do that much due to Covid. As someone else said, if something is out of stock we use something else smile

JenniferEccles Tue 10-Aug-21 11:05:35

Was this not the response you were hoping for OP?
Were you hoping for tales of woe, accounts of empty shelves ?

What’s the situation like in Switzerland?
Isn’t that more relevant to you as that’s where you live?

Callistemon Tue 10-Aug-21 11:05:32

Before the days of Sauvignon Blanc and even before Chardonnay (1960s) I remember buying a bottle of Barsac, thinking that was posh! As far as I remember, it was very sweet.

annodomini Tue 10-Aug-21 10:46:49

I haven't noted any shortages in our local Waitrose or the nearby Aldi. But then, my needs are modest!
I read somewhere that the Army are going to supply personnel to make up the deficit in delivery drivers!

JaneJudge Tue 10-Aug-21 10:38:50

anna7 thank you for your reply smile it seems treating people well and fairly is a solution to many work based problems

No shortages in France, no Frexit either

Show off ??. I wish…

I've just remembered that Waitrose did not have the Sauvignon Blanc we wanted.

I do hope no-one overheard me complaining about that and the avocados blush

That reminds me of the Midlands Meet-up of years ago - JessM, Hellogirl, Glitabo, and many more.
After the art Gallery we repaired to a hotel —to carry on drinking— and I think it was Galen who ordered a glass of white wine , suggesting a Sauvignon Blanc from the young waiter.
He looked nonplussed then stammered that he didn’t think they had any Sauvignon Blanc “in the white”.
Those were the days gringrin

Definitely not MawBe, I can’t knit to save my life - and it’s not me that eats Shreddies either, it’s my son. The gin I will admit to, but a lack of tonic has kept me on the straight and narrow, so the shortages must be a blessing in disguise.

Asda do their own version - Malted Wheaties. I buy them now and then and can’t tell the difference. Plenty on the shelves the other day.

henetha Tue 10-Aug-21 10:20:42

Just tonic water. None except the very expensive sort in the Coop and also Tesco.

I've also had no trouble ordering online. Locals are complaining that the Co-op has missing items and gaps on the shelves (shock horror).

Honestly, though, we're usually so spoilt for choice, it's hardly a problem, just buy something else!

There was NO bread. What do you suggest?. NB the purchaser was a 99yr old lady so none of your ‘bake your own’ lark thanks. Bit patronising if you don’t mind me saying so. I’m all right jack??

@janejudge Bread companies do have their regular drivers who were always paid well and had the other benefits of working for a big company, such as pension schemes, sick pay, union membership etc. In the last few years though, certainly in the bigger cities like London, drivers have been employed through agencies and have had non of the benefits associated with working for a big, reputable company. I don't know their contract conditions but their pay was considerably lower with no job security. Some of these drivers were European and have now gone back home. Hopefully we can go back to drivers being employed directly by the companies again with decent conditions. Of course prices will probably go up but I'm sure these companies can afford to offer decent pay as they did previously.
