Shamelessly nicked from Bb’Kenneth’bevan’s question in the Ask the Person…’ thread.

What’s your favourite comforting food when you are feeling ill?

Nortsat Sun 19-Dec-21 23:03:50

Yum Mapleleaf, I would like a slice of that, now please!

Mapleleaf Fri 17-Dec-21 11:42:56

Fresh bread and butter with blackcurrant jam was always a favourite.

I’ve just seen your comment lemsip, thank you, that’s very kind of you thanks

Heinz soup is getting lots of mentions.
My soup of choice is Heinz Lentil. Delicious, and also tastes ‘good for you’.
With traditional white sliced as Marydoll mentioned.
Whatever happened to MothersPride?
Up until the age of 12 I don’t think that I knew that any other bread existed!
Similarly in the world of cat food - Kitekat
In fact, I think that I could name every single product in my Nan’s kitchen cupboards… #stork smile

Childhood always Heinz or Campbell's soups tomato rice tomato oxtail or Scots broth. Lucozade was a treat but given to us for energy.
Now if feeling unwell toast with butter Marmite and tea. Throughout the day Bovril with lots of pepper.

SachaMac Thu 16-Dec-21 22:00:02

A soft boiled egg served with marmite on white toast and a nice sweet cup of tea with just a dash of milk. Thats my hangover cure too.

Grandma70s Thu 16-Dec-21 20:45:09

I got through a lot of boiled eggs when I was unwell as a child. I am feeling under the weather at the moment. I would love a boiled or scrambled egg, but I would have to cook them, so I had a mince pie instead. Not the same thing at all.

bridie54 Thu 16-Dec-21 20:28:14

I’m another who was fed Heinz tomato soup as a poorly child. Wonder why all these mums chose it? I don’t like it now tho as it’s too sweet. I also got oranges.
As an adult it’s probably tea and buttered toast.

Grandmabatty Thu 16-Dec-21 19:39:54

Leek and potato soup known as grandma's magic soup. Or an egg switched up in a cup. Or toast and peanut butter.

BlueBalou Thu 16-Dec-21 19:38:38

Heinz tomato soup with buttered cream crackers ? or barely warm toast and butter (I hate toast with melted butter), nectar when you’re ill.

lemsip Thu 16-Dec-21 19:37:57

as a child mother always gave us 'bread and milk'.. white bread broken up with a little sugar and milk..... now it's a mug of chicken soup when poorly.

so lovely to have Fanny. back she always think of good threads

Soft boiled egg and toasty soldiers. Very nice. I love toast with lurpak nice and crisp.

Treebee Thu 16-Dec-21 19:23:18

The dish we call ‘illness dinner’ is mashed potato with grated cheese stirred in, more cheese on the top then grilled. With peas. Very comforting.

I had an emergency hospital admission in the summer.
When I was released and suffering the after effects of the morphine, I understandably couldn’t eat and slept a lot.

I awoke one evening and when my anxious partner asked me if I wanted anything, I said I could eat a bag of crisps.
He later told me he went on to the landing and did a little victory dance, as he knew I must be getting better, if I was asking for crisps.

Chestnut Thu 16-Dec-21 16:26:44

Back in the 1950s I always had chicken noodle soup. The last time I was poorly the first thing I could get inside me was cool buttered toast and marmalade. The sweet orangey twang of the marmalade was what I wanted.

sodapop Thu 16-Dec-21 15:35:09

My children had Heinz tomato soup and bread. If I am ill it's usually a gastric thing so just dry toast for me. I loved Lucozade as well but can't get it here in France. I remember the crinkly wrapper as well Blondiescot.

My mother gave me pobs and it was disgusting and slimy. I can't stand the smell of hot milk.

Kate1949 Thu 16-Dec-21 14:57:25

Cheese and onion crisp sandwiches on white bread with thick butter. Very rarely have this though!

Nortsat Thu 16-Dec-21 14:46:45

When I was a child I had a long bout of whooping cough and the only thing I could manage to eat was toast (crusts off) with Auntie Emily’s home made strawberry jam.

At other times, being ill meant a small plate with a portion of mashed potatoes and gravy.
We had a large vegetable garden and the potatoes were grown there.
I still love mashed potatoes and tasty gravy.

teabagwoman Thu 16-Dec-21 14:31:59

Our Mother always gave us Lucozade and something called Benger’s Food. The latter was a thick milky drink that we loved. Now I’d opt for cheese on toast.

BBbevan Thu 16-Dec-21 14:30:17

ThanksMarydoll trouble is I’m still on jelly and custard. DH is planning curry for tonight. I think he may be doing’kill or cure’.!???

winifred01 Thu 16-Dec-21 13:20:39

Pink cosmos
I am from the Potteries and pobs was something I remember from my childhood.

Blondiescot Thu 16-Dec-21 13:05:16

Blossoming

Toast and marmite and a big mug of tea.

Ooh yes, me too! When I was little, it was always either tomato soup or an egg mashed up in a cup with butter - and 'proper' Lucozade, the one with the orange see-through crinkly wrapper, which you could only buy from the chemist. You knew you were ill when mum bought the Lucozade!

Calendargirl Thu 16-Dec-21 13:01:50

We also always had Lucozade, we loved it. Mum used to say it either made you sick or stopped you feeling it!?

Boiled chicken with white sauce was a comfort food, you don’t get boilers nowadays, more’s the pity. They were so tasty, accompanied by Mum’s thick white sauce with nutmeg grated in.

Almost worth being poorly for.

Boolya Thu 16-Dec-21 12:54:37

Hot lemonade accompanied by sliced bread spread thickly with butter and thinly with Bovril.

lemongrove Thu 16-Dec-21 12:24:32

Septimia

Bread and milk. Haven't had any for years, though.

Oh yes, pobs!
Not that I would want it now, but bits of bread in soup is rather nice, especially chicken soup for some reason when unwell.
Boiled eggs mashed up in a cup with butter used to be a favourite as a child.
Now, comfort food would be a grilled bacon sarnie or even better a fried fishfinger sarnie.

foxie48 Thu 16-Dec-21 12:16:08

Mashed banana on buttered toast is a favourite and home made soup with toast a close second. As a child I often got egg custard, which I haven't had in years.
