Shamelessly nicked from Bb’Kenneth’bevan’s question in the Ask the Person…’ thread.

What’s your favourite comforting food when you are feeling ill?

Sashabel Thu 16-Dec-21 05:18:56

Almost cool toast with lashings of good quality butter on so it doesn't turn into a soggy mess or a bacon butty with brown sauce. Getting hungry just thinking about it!!

BigBertha1 Thu 16-Dec-21 06:13:31

Cream crackers with proper butter and Heinz tomato soup. I used to have this if I was ill as a child but probably wouldn't like it now. I don't keep either if those things in stock.

Cheese on toast, or thick toast with a mashed banana.

BBbevan Thu 16-Dec-21 06:43:38

You may Nick anything you like from me Fanny as long as it's not himself. I am in no condition at the moment to fight back.
Did have some Knorr Chicken noodle soup yesterday which was nice.

Mummy always used to give me a soft boiled egg, mashed in a dish and mixed with small squares of buttered white bread. Nectar of the God's when recovering from being poorly.

Sarahmob Thu 16-Dec-21 07:27:30

As a child when recovering from illness i was always given ‘poorly fish’ (simply poached and served with parsley sauce). I hate that now! Our other treat was lucozade, but that doesn’t taste the same now either.
My go to comfort food these days is mashed potato with lots of butter and cheese - always picks me up.

Ladyleftfieldlover Thu 16-Dec-21 07:32:41

When I was little and ill, mum made us bowls of warm milk with broken pieces of white bread stirred in. When we were recovering, it was always tinned tomato soup or scrambled eggs.

tanith Thu 16-Dec-21 07:36:14

Heinz tomato soup with crusty buttered white bread or scrambled eggs. My mum always did bread in warm milk too it was slimy YUK!

M0nica Thu 16-Dec-21 07:38:32

Depends how unwell, but tinned spaghetti in tomato sauce with grated cheese on top on first signs of recovery, then as I improve, cheese on toast then tomato soup and a large slice of buttered fresh bread to steak and kidney pudding (not pie) with lots of cabbage and gravy. By which time I should be back to normal and fighting fit.

Chicken soup made with bone broth and made by my dear sister. It’s a real pickle-me-up.

hulahoop Thu 16-Dec-21 07:49:26

Scrambled egg with toast is my go to meal.

Fanny, thank you for starting this gentle thread and BB for inspiring her.

When I was ill, my mother always made me Scotch broth soup. However it had to be strained through a sieve and served with what we call a plain loaf here in Scotland. The darker the crust, the better!
I know, Im a bit precious. wink

My mother refused to buy any brand, but Sunblest and woe betide you, if when sent to the shops, you brought back Milanda or Mother's Pride brands.

I now have a stash of strained soup in the freezer. It tastes totally different, when a blender is used, so I still sieve it, just like my mother did.
In fact I have had two portions this week, as I have totally lost my appetite.

BlueBelle Thu 16-Dec-21 08:00:05

My children laugh now because apparently I always gave the chicken noodle soup, bread and butter and lucozade
I don’t have any poorly food as an adult though I just eat whatever’s around ?

GagaJo Thu 16-Dec-21 08:02:19

Ginger ale and Rich Tea biscuits. Take the biscuits with me when I'm working abroad in case of emergencies.

Josianne Thu 16-Dec-21 08:07:04

As a child it was either Heinz tomato or Heinz vegetable soup and marmite fingers.
As an adult, for some strange reason it is an avocado.

Grandmagrim Thu 16-Dec-21 08:20:22

Tomato soup for me too. The reason is that apart from the childhood nostalgia aspect, if I’m poorly it’s usually due to diverticulitis and a smooth soup puts less stress on an already inflamed bowel.

I've been recovering from surgery and in the immediate post-op days was too nauseous to eat. My friend brought me a few tins of soup, cream of tomato, chicken, etc., but I was still a bit 'meh' so she brought a tin of Heinz Mulligatawny and I've been hooked since!

Talk about a taste from childhood - it must have been 50 years since I'd tasted it.

Needless to say my appetite soon returned with a vengeance but Mulligatawny is now a regular on my Ocado order smile

Bread and milk. Haven't had any for years, though.

Mollygo Thu 16-Dec-21 09:11:15

On ask a question I said ground rice. As a child it was bread and milk but skimmed milk stops that being a pleasure now.
We always knew if we were really ill because we got Lucozade. That was in the days before calories and the sinfulness of sugar!

PinkCosmos Thu 16-Dec-21 09:16:13

We used to have 'pobs' which is white bread in warm milk - in a cup.

I can't remember whether the bread was buttered or not. I think it might also have had sugar.

I don't know anyone else who called this 'pobs'. I am from the North West of England so maybe it is a local thing or my dad just made up this name himself.

I haven't had it donkeys years.

Hetty58 Thu 16-Dec-21 09:21:44

Ladyleftfieldlover, I remember that soggy bread and milk. It just made me heave (I'm lactose intolerant, but they didn't know then). I enjoyed cream crackers with jam (no butter) and Lucozade - almost worth being ill for!

AGAA4 Thu 16-Dec-21 09:34:41

My mum always gave us lucozade whatever was wrong with us and I still like to have some when I'm not well.

Blossoming Thu 16-Dec-21 09:43:01

Toast and marmite and a big mug of tea.

NannyJan53 Thu 16-Dec-21 09:50:49

Cheese on Toast!

When I had flu a few years ago, I didn't eat at all for 4 days. Cheese on toast was the first food I craved when my appetite came back.
