Out Of Date Pastry: Yay or Nay? ?

Hello
Oh dear. I haven’t made my splendid puff pastry mince pies yet (mainly due to DH having no appetite, which thankfully seems to have returned).

Anyway, I have two packs of Jus-Roll in the fridge - bb. 21/11/21

Should I go for it, or bin it?

Thank you, and a Happy and Peaceful Christmas! x

definitely don't use anything past its use by dates.
these are not arbitrarily put on products; there is very precise food laws that have to be followed.
best before relates to quality, texture, taste.
use by relates to food safety, bodily health.

FannyCornforth

^Use by^
But they would say that, wouldn’t they?

so it's use by. bin it. why risk esp a CEV person. why risk anyone's well-being. go and buy some. bargains to be had.

welbeck Wed 22-Dec-21 06:44:47

i mean buy a complete ready- made, ready to eat product.
and eat it. and relax and enjoy it. having checked dates first...

dogsmother Wed 22-Dec-21 07:03:14

Use it, no question unless as others say it’s obviously not good.

FannyCornforth Wed 22-Dec-21 07:13:16

I don’t think that I will use it.
Just the idea of it being out of date is putting me off it…
And I’m feeling absolutely terrible about putting poor old DH at risk with my dodgy festive fare!

I’m now more than open to suggestions as to what to do with my luxury M&S mincemeat and Baileys double cream! ?

FannyCornforth Wed 22-Dec-21 07:14:05

Thanks all, by the way! x

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 22-Dec-21 09:42:59

I would open it and if it looked and smelled OK then I would use it. It's been in the fridge so should be fine IMO.

henetha Wed 22-Dec-21 09:46:41

It's a bit too far out of date, I think. I often use things that are a day or two, or three, over the date, but one month is too long.

FannyCornforth Wed 22-Dec-21 09:48:42

Yes henetha, I didn’t realise at first just how out of date it was.
It can’t have had much fridge-life in it in the first place…

Make some pastry of course - easy peasy.

Grandmabatty Wed 22-Dec-21 09:51:23

Mince meat ice cream! Soften vanilla ice cream and put the mince meat through it. Refreeze then serve with the Bailey's double cream.

It’s funny how these trivial threads get so many posts!
I remember I started a thread last Christmas about sausage rolls which got loads of replies.
I must make a tradition of an annual festive pastry post.
I notice that kittylester has started a thread about cooking turkey, I bet that that gets lots of replies

FannyCornforth Wed 22-Dec-21 09:53:47

I can’t make any pastry atm Maw, my right hand is all manky because I scalded it badly last week in a pasta themed accident.

LadyGracie Wed 22-Dec-21 09:56:49

Bin it. I wouldn't bin it if it was up to a week over. Too risky.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 22-Dec-21 10:02:32

At least no-one will want to eat at my house with my Terry Wogan attitudes to best before dates!!! (If anyone remembers what he used to say on the matter on his morning radio programme. I bet the sprouts would have been on since September!). Used to give me a good laugh while driving to work.

Use them as a topping for baked apples? Porridge?

Ah, sorry to hear that.(I use the Magimix for pastry myself.)
Filling for baked apples would be a delicious alternative if you can get baking apples. Otherwise the mincemeat will keep for ages in the fridge or a cool cupboard. Drink the Baileys and put some cream in your coffee!

All sorted! Bill Nextdoor (bless him) will get me some pastry from Asda.
Hurray! I can bin or feed the birds with a gladdened heart!
We shall go to the mince pie ball!

Blossoming Wed 22-Dec-21 10:58:35

I’ve never seen mince pies made with puff pastry. Please post a photo of the finished article FannyC.

I have scars on my right hand from a pasta-related scalding incident some years ago, I think it should carry a government safety warning.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 22-Dec-21 12:16:41

My Mum always made a few with puff pastry as well as shortcrust. Lovely!

MaizieD Thu 23-Dec-21 08:46:09

I'm curious to know what condition the pastry was in when you opened the pack to feed it to the birds, FannyC

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 23-Dec-21 08:48:45

Are the birds still alive?

FannyCornforth Thu 23-Dec-21 08:54:22

I must admit that the pastry of shame is still in the fridge blush
I’ve got my Ocado delivery later (sans pastry) so I will need to have a bit of a fridge audit.
Maizie, in the interests of science, I shall report back.
Bill came up with the goods, which a frozen this time, so I shouldn’t have any further issues.
This pastry though is in a block, and, further embarrassment, I’m not sure if I am in possession of a rolling pin…

Marydoll Thu 23-Dec-21 08:56:27

Oh Fanny, you certainly have done the walk of shame! ?

Just keep on posting these gentle threads.x

MaizieD Thu 23-Dec-21 09:00:58

Does Bill have a rolling pin?

If we lived near each other we could do a pastry swap. My OH bought me ready rolled puff pastry but I do have a rolling pin (2 in fact) and am perfectly happy to wield it.

A glass bottle (empty) could be a workaround. Think wine bottle...
