Australia's contribution to the discussions.
Not for the faint-hearted!

Definitely an abomination!

Same here grandMattie can't get them here so have to get my husband to make some again.

grandMattie Sun 06-Mar-22 16:53:52

Yuk. Give the traditional ones every time!

NotTooOld Sun 06-Mar-22 16:50:22

Ooh yes - apple and cinnamon, orange, give them all a try. Except perhaps marmite. That might be a step too far.

Pantglas2 Sun 06-Mar-22 16:44:55

Not just an abomination- sacrilege ?‍♀️

Just plain hot cross buns for me no flavours thankyou.

Beauregard Sun 06-Mar-22 16:33:14

I'd draw the line at marmite as I'm in the 'hate it' camp, but many of the sweet variations are good, chocolate, caramel etc. This week we've tried a hot cross scone - very nice!

I like the chocolate ones (no surprise there) and the apple and cinnamon, oh and the orange ones too!

They are very nice, they just don't beat the original though as that has the most erm... hot cross buness really

I’ve never fancied trying the flavoured ones. We somehow manage to hold off eating them until a week or two before Easter. With great difficulty!

Farzanah Sun 06-Mar-22 16:31:53

I usually buy trad ones to make bread and butter pud. Any time of year. Don’t think marmite ones would work………but, perhaps worth a try?

Aveline

DH likes M&S's marmite flavoured cheese hot cross buns. Don't know why they aren't just buns!

I love them too - mind you I love anything with Marmite! Love trying the new flavours.

I like flavoured, spicy buns.
I like hot crosses buns.
Ne'er the twain shall meet.

Georgesgran Sun 06-Mar-22 15:42:43

Just the original for me too - not keen, but a bit like mince pies - seasonal, so I feel I must have one, just to say I’ve had one!

M0nica Sun 06-Mar-22 15:42:07

If its flavoured it is not a Hot Cross Bun, just a flavoured bun.

Kim19 Sun 06-Mar-22 15:40:10

I give every new flavour the once over.

Never heard of any other thuan trad. Not before Good Friday and when I used to make them when the children were at home.

I finished off a pack of salted caramel and chocolate ones from aldi. They were nice, but I prefer the original ones.

Oopsadaisy1 Sun 06-Mar-22 15:30:36

Oh no. A step too far for me, just a good old fashioned Hot Cross bun and I try to hold out until Easter before eating one (or 3).

MawtheMerrier Sun 06-Mar-22 15:27:13

Paw would not countenance any hot cross buns before Holy Week but they have always been among my favourite “seasonal” bakes, beating mince pies hands down.
But what about all the different varieties you can get now?
Do they beat a simply spiced hot cross bun?
I have to declare an interest as I have just demolished a Waitrose Mocha Coffee version and it was amaaaazing !
