Fried eggs! Cooked ‘properly’ - or not.

I’ve been reminded by a leaflet left by the milkman today, with no less than 5 fried eggs on the cover - all with bright orange yolks, i.e. with a layer of slimy, uncooked white on top.

I’m prepared to be told I’m hyper fussy (dh thinks so) but I really can’t bear fried eggs like this. I dare say it goes back to my Dm, who would always spoon hot fat or oil over the tops, so that they turned pink and cooked.

I never order fried eggs out because of this, or if I do I’ll pass the extra one to dh. Very occasionally it turns out that the chef does know how to cook a fried egg ‘properly’, but it’s very rare.
And no, I don’t want them ‘turned over’ - I want them cooked properly the right way up!
Does anyone else loathe that layer of slimy, uncooked egg white? Not just me, I hope!

I spray pan with one cal spray. It cooks eggs beautifully. I turn gas down once pan is hot and it cooks egg through.

Why do eggs seem so hard to get right in hotels? As you say, snotty fried eggs usually and don’t get me started on poached! I usually end up asking for ‘over easy’ fried as they’re preferable to snotty!

I like eggs with yellow yolks. In hotels abroad serving breakfast the chef asks you if you would like your egg 'sunny side up' I do.

Love fried eggs and I always 'pink' them - though I didn't know that that's what I was doing! But I am utterly useless with poached eggs - the yolk always separates from the white no matter how much I swirl and use vinegar. Oooh! I'm going to have another try for lunch!

My partner likes fried eggs done 'eggs over easy' in the American style - that is, turned yoke side down for a minute or so.

I baste them or flip them depending which pan I use. I don't like them in butter so I use olive oil.

I think there are many proper ways of frying eggs. It all depends on who is going to eat them.

I can only eat fried eggs if they have been turned in the pan and the yolk resembles that of a hard-boiled egg, but just a little softer in consistency. This goes back to my mother's habit of breaking a soft-boiled egg up in a cup for us when we were small or even when we were older but ill in bed. I found the very sight of this "mashed egg" quite disgusting.

My mother loved eggs in any shape or form. For years I refused utterly to eat fried eggs. My mother fried her eggs until the white was solid and the yolk bright yellow. Daddy wanted his splashed with fat, so the yolk turned pink. DH eats his fried eggs like my mother did.

I always ask how people want theirs, as there is only one "right way" to serve an egg and that is how the person wants it, who will be going to eat it.

I’m with you Witzend fried, poached or boiled, no yucky runny stuff thanks.
And no free range around here, Avian flu.

From what I understand, chickens have had to be kept inside since November and yet I bought six free range eggs yesterday.
Does that mean that my eggs are already four months old?

I give them a quick flip over and then out of the pan. Can’t stand runny whites however you cook an egg. Makes me feel I’ll to see it. “Properly” dome eggs ad chips are gorgeous

I used to "pink" them as my mother did. It's a new phrase to.me too! These days we have a fantastic non stick frying pan so they get a quick flip over. I can't bear a fried egg with a hard yolk, nothing to dip the bacon into!

Kartush Fri 25-Mar-22 13:24:19

My husband is the egg cook in our house and he cooks them perfectly, no slimy bits anywhere

Bazza Fri 25-Mar-22 13:29:41

I absolutely adore eggs of any kind, but when I fry I always turn them just for a second. What Americans call over easy. I don’t use enough oil to baste. My mum would use bacon fat. Can’t do snotty eggs, aka sunny side up.

Summerfly Fri 25-Mar-22 13:48:24

I use a lid too. It’s so easy and no splattering of oil. Can’t eat snotty eggs either Yuk.

Madashell Fri 25-Mar-22 13:59:38

Apparently as a baby I would push egg white away and squash it into the corners of my highchair tray - still do it today - egg white makes me gag. O - with the exception of meringue, of course.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 25-Mar-22 14:02:07

I don’t like egg white either except in boiled or scrambled eggs or omelettes. I thought I was the only one!

Mallin Fri 25-Mar-22 14:09:13

I’ve faced being unable to cook a fried egg and only order them at one local cafe when the owner’s Mum is cooking! Must admit I haven’t tried a lidded pan though. I DO try to put oil on top but only manage to harden the yolk.

What a great description from someone-snotty eggs?. I hate eggs cooked any way if there are residual ‘snotty’ bits ?

Saggi Fri 25-Mar-22 14:30:50

Me ….I cannot eat a slimy uncooked egg. I flip them or splash the yolk with oil .No ‘sunny side up’ for me!! Yuk

Shirls52000 Fri 25-Mar-22 14:37:47

Love a fried egg butty, always vaste them though so that the white is white and the yolk stays runny , yum

No, JJ. DEFRA permit the Free Range label to be used for up to 16 weeks after the order is issued to keep chooks inside. Eggs produced this week, I think it was from Tuesday, will have to be sold as Barn Eggs.

I'm not a great lover of eggs - especially fried eggs. In fact, I would say I've not eaten one for several years although I do quite like a poached egg. The thought of a slimy, snotty white and a runny yolk makes me feel nauseous and I would never, ever eat an egg away from home. I'm probably quite neurotic but if I'm going to eat an egg of any description I need to have cooked it myself, and have it on toast doused in Worcestershire sauce or ketchup to take the edge off the "egginess".
DH loves a fried egg and cooks his own splattering it with oil.

I put a lid on the frying pan so the steam cooks the top of the egg as I hate uncooked egg white. It also stops fat splattering over the hob.

I do this too. My SIL likes hers paralysed-broken yolk and frilly white. Makes me cry.

Dianehillbilly1957 Fri 25-Mar-22 19:53:43

I like runny yolk, but can't abide slimy white! So I flip over for a few seconds to cook the slime. Hopefully not breaking the yolk as it's not so nice rubberised

Wetnosewheatie Fri 25-Mar-22 21:33:20

Snotty eggs are devils food. Baste them with oil or I will quickly flip. If they have crispy bits all the better. And a bit of brown sauce :-)
