Every so often, I get a craving for hotdogs with fried onions and mustard. When I eat them I'm always disappointed. The sausage is never as nice as I expected. Does anyone else have a food that lets them down? Needless to say, this is a bit lighthearted. Chocolate rarely lets me down. ?

inishowen we will have to agree to disagree on the contentious matter of fish and chips! ?

Fish and chips.

I have a philosophy:-

I am a "strong tea drinker" but when I am not at home, I drink Coffee, because, A bad cup of coffee tastes better than a bad cup of Tea.

Make what you will of that.

Oh, and seconding herbal teas. With the exception of peppermint, they taste like scented bath water.

Sourdough bread. Such a hard crust it can break teeth and has a strange, well, sour, taste! Also very expensive.

Lobster - always so exciting, but then a big disappointment!

Auntieflo Wed 04-May-22 11:23:17

Avocados. Don't really like them at all, even though I think I do.

Another one for the tasteless Herbal teas as well. They sound so tempting, but are only mainly a cup of hot water.

Commercial strawberries are very different to home grown strawberries.

Try growing the variety “Victoria” a really old fashioned but oh so lovely strawberry.

Strawberries, they look very tempting but in reality they are often tasteless & not very sweet & juicy at all. Occasionally I manage to pick up a punnet that taste just like the ones I remember from my childhood but mostly they’re a disappointment now.

Fish and chips - looks and smells so appetising, but after eating them (which is very rare) I just feel nauseous (it's the grease). Same with cream cakes (especially cheesecake) too sickly.
Guinness - looks so creamy, but it's bitter!

Herbal teas. The names sound wonderful but they all taste like weak washing up water to me.

Ooh yes, they often sound amazing, but with very few exceptions, they rarely live up to expectations!

Oh, and polenta. Soggy baby food!

CanadianGran Tue 03-May-22 19:21:21

Store bought cakes. They make them look so pretty, but then I am so disappointed with either texture or taste. Soggy crust on a cheesecake, etc. My DH doesn't eat sweets, so every once in a while I will buy a slice from a shop, but it just doesn't satisfy the craving.

Agree with champagne. It is celebratory, but just doesn't taste good to me.

We grow our own tomatoes and they do taste far nicer than the supermarket ones, but I must admit I don't eat nearly as much fruit in this country as I do when I'm abroad because the taste is worlds apart.

Maggierose Tue 03-May-22 18:39:16

Aubergines, they look so lovely, all purple and shiny, that sometimes can’t resist buying them. Don’t like the taste though!

Kate1949 Tue 03-May-22 16:15:43

We never keep tomatoes in the fridge but most still have no taste. Casdon Our daughter told us about picolo ones but we've never seen them. The tomatoes abroad are wonderful.

Yoghurt is a thing that I have tried to like, but now I have to admit it’s unpalatable, overly sweet and give me indigestion.

You are eating the wrong type of yoghurt Beanutz. Find some live natural unflavoured yoghurt. The Collective does a wonderful one. You can buy it in Waitrose.

Esspee Tue 03-May-22 16:06:54

I used to grow different types of tomatoes but Gardener’s Delight was so superior in flavour that towards the end of my tomato growing days I grew them exclusively.

I don’t like Pizzas, such a cheap nasty apology for food with a huge markup.

It’s not too sweet if you have natural yoghurt, in fact not sweet at all!

I am almost always disappointed by salad. Looks pretty, but I am not a rabbit.

grannyrebel7 Tue 03-May-22 16:04:06

Yoghurt I always want to like all those little pots of different flavour but I just don't. Full fat Greek yoghurt I love though.

I think that my name tells you all you need to know about what I like. ... sophisticated people like blue cheese, but I think that it tastes of mould( funny that )

I agree on chocolate and wine- never let me down. The thing I sometimes fancy, but very rarely have is a nice juicy steak, but when I do it’s neither nice or juicy but tasteless and does nothing for me, I end up giving it to DH.

Ailidh Tue 03-May-22 15:30:00

Galaxy let me down the other day (but it was a gift, so I struggled personfully on ?) but Cadbury's Dairy Milk never does.....?

Casdon Tue 03-May-22 15:27:01

I know what you mean Kate1949. I’ve never seen Scotch tomatoes here in Wales, but I do love the little Italian piccolo tomatoes, which they sell in some supermarkets. I’ve never managed to find piccolo seed in the UK though, and when I tried to grow my own from the fresh tomato seeds they didn’t work which was disappointing.
