Platinum pudding - is this a joke?

I thought what a great idea to have a pudd. many of us could make and it was for the Queens Platinum Jubilee. I watched the programme with the five fabulous contestants entering their offerings. The winners was by far the most complicated and expensive. I shall wait for someone to copy it and if its under a fiver and fabulous I might try it Smile

Sorry, but I’m on the ‘miserable’ side of the fence on this one too. At a time when we’re facing massive hikes in the cost of living and more and more people are going to be pushed into poverty and choosing to either heat or eat, I think this is utterly tone deaf.

The degree of difficulty could well be why it won. It’s certainly not easy for others to replicate.

Yes Platinum Pudding far too complicated and costly... it wont catch on and wont stand the test of time unlike Victoria Sponge or Coronation Chicken. Shame, it would have been lovely to remember our Queen of 70 years reign by being able to recreate a simple pudding.

I'm amazed that they even chose for this as the winner. I thought a pudding fit for a Queen would involve some kind of chocolate cake because that's been reported as her favourite kind of cake and after all it is meant to be a celebration for the Queen. They must have had some grand chocolate pudding entries surely?

I’m making it this weekend, but using a jar of luxury lemon curd, a packet of amaretti biscuits, and probably Birds custard. It probably will look the same but taste a little more home made!

I love it - sounds and looks like the effort to make it will really be worth it. Will be doing that.

No but they will have those days off in lieu.

I won’t be making it, but I may make my traditional blackberry and apple trifle. I cheat with bought either bought bought Swiss rolls or Madeira cake. I buy good quality jam but don’t make it myself.

I bought one to make a trifle , Maddyone, then thought it might be too dense so used the only other thing I could find at the time, which were Boudoir biscuits.
I froze the Madeira cake and it's still in the freezer.

Does it work well in a trifle? Do you spread it with jam?
One with sherry of course ?

Kate54, I'd make it all from scratch, as I really enjoy cooking and I'd make a vegan version. I'd do it in stages, though, not all at once. I'm sure most people will just buy the biscuits and swiss roll, though.

If anyone finds a lemon curd Swiss roll without buttercream please let me know!!

WendyD Go into any supermarket and you will find 'Coronation Chicken sandwiches in all of them - and they sell very well.

I certainly make Coronation Chicken, quite regularly in the summer months. It is what I will make when we have visitors, especially if we can sit outside to eat.

I would sooner have something like Coronation Chicken served on a large antique oval dish, chicken in the centre, surrounded by the rice, a just plonked in the middle of the table and people serve themselves, to a barbercue any day with all its faddling round and burnt inedible food.

I read that the Queen enjoys Lemon Posset which is so easy to make. I serve it in little ramekin dishes with some fresh raspberries and a piece of homemade shortbread. I’ll be buying my trifle from M and S! (Perhaps the shortbread might be bought there also.The little squares are delicious )

Although I wouldn’t attempt to make it, it was my favourite ot the finalists and also probably the easiest to make. It was a competition for a pudding for the Queen so unlikely to be using ready made ingredients! Hopefully some enterprising retailers will produce a version.

I thought the whole thing was ridiculous and MacGran43's idea of some lemon posset, raspberries and shortbread sounds delicious.

We do. One of Mr A's favourites - when he used to take his Coronation Chicken sandwiches to work he had to take extra to feed his mates. Although they had onsite catering the sandwiches offered were pretty poor so Mr A always took his own. I could probably have made a fortune selling them to the people he worked with.

That is exactly what I thought when I first saw what had won the Platinum cake competition. Too many ingredients, too many stages, too complex. No one will ever make it.

For those who say jelly is not vegetarian, Holland and Barrett sell a very acceptable vegetarian jelly which I have used successfully in trifle!
