Too much icing on cake, especially cup cakes!

I am a spoil sport or does anyone else think that the trend to put too much frosting on cakes is simply wrong? I want to taste the cake and not be overwhelmed by pretty, often discarded frosting. It seems that excessive frosting is for the esoteric benefit of the cake decorator.

Apart from LardI am very partial to carrot cake which normally has a cream cheese icing so is not sickly. I agree too many cupcakes with too much icing. They may look good but not so good to eat.

I do agree that on store-bought cakes there is too much icing. I do like icing, and in fact just made my own birthday cake this week; a butter pecan cake with cream cheese icing (DH did offer to go buy a cake, but I prefer mine). It was very good, and the amount of icing was just right.

I'll take a nice home made cake over store bought any day.

How about this Victoria Sponge? Homemade.
Just not by me.
Great ingredients, no preservatives. Plain and simple cake, my favourite of all time.
Wish I could have cake but I’m on a low fat diet which is working so I’m happy.

I totally loathe the tendency to replace cake toppings with cream cheese often without labelling it as such. I have a severe reaction to even the smallest amount of cheese/yoghurt/creme fraiche. One bite and my innards are in turmoil for days.

Just a,plain mince pie, mind.

None of this fancy icing or strange fillings.

Just so MissA why do retailers find it necessary to try and improve on perfection. Truly a case of over egging the pudding.

A nice wedge of chocolate cake please with generous buttercream filling but melted Cadbury chocolate on top, not more buttercream, otherwise I'll scrape it off smile

Kate Moss, I think.

And the Duchess of Windsor

I think they're both too thin. smile
Just my thoughts.
