Check it doesn't get overcooked. My new-last-year metal slow cooker seems to cook more quickly than the old ceramic one. Although I set it on low to the correct time, we went out for the day and the gammon cooked so well it shredded rather than sliced. It was still very tasty.
I always use my slow cooker for gammon, but it is possible to overcook it. I have found that longer than 6 hours on low can result in a joint that falls apart. Tastes great but difficult to carve neatly. Overnight success may depend on how many hours you sleep!
My husband always cooks a gammon in the slow cooker in very cheap beer. Everyone loves it (I’m veggie so not for me!)On high for an hour or so then low for about 5 hours. Some people use coke but found that made it too sweet. Still safe for kids to eat.
Quite common to roast a whole gammon MaizeD, personally I don’t and ours is cooked Christmas Eve as the oven has potatoes and parsnips roasting when the turkey is resting.
Why would you cook gammon in the oven? It's a joint for cooking in water on the stove top or in a slow cooker.
I'd boil or slow cook it on Christmas morning, glaze it when done and pop it in the oven for 15/20 minutes to finish while the turkey is resting and everything else is being finished or served up.
Then make pea or lentil soup with the cooking water and left over Christmas veg...
I have a 2kg gammon joint to go with turkey for Christmas day but no free oven space. Can I cook it overnight in my slow cooker? Any ideas appreciated. Online ideas are telling me six hours on low setting. I'm cooking for 12 o'clock. Thanks.
