Slow cooker gammon

I have a 2kg gammon joint to go with turkey for Christmas day but no free oven space. Can I cook it overnight in my slow cooker? Any ideas appreciated. Online ideas are telling me six hours on low setting. I'm cooking for 12 o'clock. Thanks.

This happened to me one year -someone wanted gammon and not turkey .

I had no room in my oven .

I precooked the gammon , let it cool completely and reheated it thoroughly after covering it in gravy on Xmas day .

Served with a couple of sauces - no one was any the wiser !

I always cook gammon in my slow cooker. You could either put it on low when you go to bed or on high when you get up.

Why would you cook gammon in the oven? It's a joint for cooking in water on the stove top or in a slow cooker.

I'd boil or slow cook it on Christmas morning, glaze it when done and pop it in the oven for 15/20 minutes to finish while the turkey is resting and everything else is being finished or served up.

Then make pea or lentil soup with the cooking water and left over Christmas veg... grin

Quite common to roast a whole gammon MaizeD, personally I don’t and ours is cooked Christmas Eve as the oven has potatoes and parsnips roasting when the turkey is resting.

My husband always cooks a gammon in the slow cooker in very cheap beer. Everyone loves it (I’m veggie so not for me!)On high for an hour or so then low for about 5 hours. Some people use coke but found that made it too sweet. Still safe for kids to eat.

I always use my slow cooker for gammon, but it is possible to overcook it. I have found that longer than 6 hours on low can result in a joint that falls apart. Tastes great but difficult to carve neatly. Overnight success may depend on how many hours you sleep! smile

Check it doesn't get overcooked. My new-last-year metal slow cooker seems to cook more quickly than the old ceramic one. Although I set it on low to the correct time, we went out for the day and the gammon cooked so well it shredded rather than sliced. It was still very tasty.

X post with shysal

Great minds think alike, Callistemon!

I did mine recently in the slow cooker with two cans of cherry coke, a halved onion and a dozen juniper berries.
Then glazed it with a mixture of black treacle, mustard and brown sugar and roasted it in the airfryer for ten minutes.

To be honest I probably wouldn't bother with the glaze again as once the treacle got hot it melted and all slithered off! Though maybe I just put too much on...

Saw this receipe a couple of days ago. Couldn't be easier. Maybe just cook a bit less so it doesn't 'pull' or shred?

Callistemon21 and shysal just describe it as "pulled" and you'll be bang on trend 😁

I've par-boiled mine before now then finished it off in the oven.
Take off the skin after par-boiling leaving the fat, criss-cross with a knife and spread the fat with honey, cloves, or, the most successful recipe, with marmalade.
Then roast.

Right on trend for the first time in my life 😁

Thank you all for your replies. The cooking instructions were to roast or hob cook. As I'm cooking for 12 o'clock and won't be up at 6 o'clock to get it started I think that I will slow cook the day before. I think my family will be more than happy with 'on trend' pulled gammon if that's how it turns out. Happy Christmas.

In the slow cooker with cherry coke. Beautiful

I did one recently in the slow cooker on low for about 6 hours using Coca Cola. I soaked it in cold water first for a few hours (could do this overnight) brought it to the boil and then rinsed in cold water to wash away any saltiness before placing in the slow cooker with the cola. It was really tasty.

I've done mine in the slow cooker with very little liquid and it was a bit dry. Maybe it was too long but how much liquid do you all use? Do you have it half way up the gammon??

M0nica Wed 21-Dec-22 15:16:14

I have been cooking the gammon joint in the slow ccoker for several years now. I am not a precise cook so roughly 3-4 hours for a 3 lb gammon and 4-5 hours for a 4-5l gammon

Yes, I do mine in quite a lot of water, not quite covering the gammon.

Put the cooking stock in the fridge overnight after it’s all cooked, skim off any fat and freeze the stock.

Delicious when making soup or risotto, very tasty.

I cover the gammon with boiling water to start. If it has the rind on I remove it after boiling, sprinkle with salt, and turn it into crackling in a hot oven. It never lasts long enough to make the meal table!

Ziplok Wed 21-Dec-22 17:41:39

Almost cover the gammon with liquid.

Overnight in slow cooker on lowest setting, with sliced shallots, garlic, parsley and tarragon, and a glass of dry sherry.

Remove from cooker in the morning and allow to stand,

Make lentil or pea soup with the residual liquid.

It's what slow cookers were invented for!

Thank you everyone - I'm planning on pineapple juice so I might mix it with a bit of water.

I pressure cooked and air fried the last one in the Ninja and it was gorgeous. Any liquid gets used to make pease pudding for ham sandwiches later on.
