When I placed my online order last week I couldn't get any tomatoes. Today I visited my local supermarket which usually have a large selection of tomatoes only to find all the shelves bare. Staff were unable to offer an explanation. Have I missed something?

There's plenty of everything here in Devon too.

Sorry to gloat, but in my local supermarket in Normandy here was no shortage of fruit and veg of all kinds. I bought 2lbs of tomatoes, from a huge heap for £4 and a cucumber, not very big, for £1.25. there was plenty of lettuce, but as Ididn't want any I did not notice the price.

We have plenty here in S E Essex also.

Extract from a foreign report

Not really accurate though is it.

There are tomatoes, cucumbers etc on sale in the U.K.

More worrying is the Avian Flu outbreak which has meant that the majority of hens are now kept indoors.

It was a joke - in reply to maw but more accurate than many would have us believe.

Why in reply to me ?
What did I say?

You said “ keep the tomato jokes coming”

So I did

It could be absolutely devastating for wild birds so the EU should crack down on the supposedly banned net trapping of songbirds which still goes on. 🤬

I absolutely agree about the bird trapping, but this would be outside of the EU jurisdiction. It would be a domestic matter, and each individual country should be lobbied.

My spaniel would have licked them all up.

It's a good job there's no shortage of eggs .... yet.
Someone made an omelette before me tonight!

😂😂😂
Love it!!

Too long has cheap food been the policy of the supermarkets and the British public went along with it happily. The result…small farmers driven off their non-profitable farms. Takeovers by huge conglomerates. Vast chicken farms, huge greenhouses. All reliant on cheap energy and cheap foreign workers.

Lea Valley Growers:
If the government wants cheap healthy food for the country, they have an opportunity to help British Growers increase the UK’s Fresh Produce self sufficiency and food security beyond the current 25% figure in the following ways.

Introduce a scheme that rewards food production rather than previous land area based schemes.
Introduce an infrastructure grant scheme that will allow growers to renew their glasshouses and technology.
Introduce a renewable energy grant for Geothermal/Ground source heat that will allow growers to move away from Fossil fuels.
Make the Seasonal workers scheme a permanent scheme and increase the amount of workers to 100,000 in anticipation of an expanding sector. This will give confidence to growers to increase their growing areas.
Introduce legislation to ban the sale of Fresh Produce at less than the purchase price, therefore protecting growers from retailer campaign pressure that has previously driven some out of business.

I don't know.

It's a huge enterprise, obviously well funded.

oh so Thanet earth are already doing that smile but not the others it seems?

what I want to know, if the greenhouses aren't growing because of the price of electricity, isn't there a better way of storing energy on greenhouses that can be used in the winter months, in the way of say solar power as they attract a lot of sun and heat - especially this summer as it was so hot. They built that big greenhouse place in Kent, did they not think forward to storing power? Kent gets a lot of sun I understand

Thanet Earth:

We work hard to leave a positive footprint on our environment. Each of our glasshouses is also a power station using Combined Heat and Power (CHP) generators. As well as providing the electricity to light and heat our glasshouses, we provide additional power back to the local grid. We have enough generating capacity to power approximately 50,000 homes.

Fleurpepper maybe you’d arrange to have some fruit and veg parcels delivered to us poor old Brits living in world war two conditions?
That reminded me of when DH's Aunt used to send them food parcels during WW2.
He looked forward to them, tinned fruit etc, full of Australian sunshine, a welcome change from the monotony of rations.

Wow this thread has made me🤣
Am still buying tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers btw.
I think your anti-Brexit slip is showing, hike it up a bit?
Of course Spain has enough tomatoes for all in Spain, and likely for France too, but poor weather conditions mean not enough to send to all countries they previously supplied .
If we had still been in the EU the same would apply, if there aren’t enough to go round then there just aren’t.
My latest tomatoes are from the Netherlands and look very nice, I only fry or roast them.I grow my own tomatoes in Summer to just slice and eat in sarnies.

Callistemon21 Sun 26-Feb-23 12:57:38

And the weather.

You're not British if you don't moan about the weather, so I was told by an Australian.

Callistemon21 Sun 26-Feb-23 12:52:14

Oh, and cucumbers!

Callistemon21 Sun 26-Feb-23 12:51:43

Well, we're covering just about everything on this thread, from tomatoes, to modern slavery, plastic, fuel prices, apple orchards, eggs, Avian flu, songbirds, romantic Frenchmen, love rat Frenchmen 😁

Fleurpepper Sun 26-Feb-23 12:49:45

That being short of tomatoes and cucumbers was not important, or sad. I agree btw.
