In praise of tea...

Ordinary old black tea, with milk.

I've drunk it after giving birth, when getting a cancer diagnosis, post-op, when hungover, to get rid of headaches (2 cups, in the quiet of morning) and when feeling nauseas to settle my stomach.

The only time I've gone off tea was sadly on chemo, but even then, I just switched over to Earl Grey. The perfumed taste disguised the chemo metallic tang.

I've taken my own supply of Yorkshire Tea to Spain, Switzerland, the US and even, ironically, took my tea to China. A little taste of home when homesick.

I used to love coffee, but gave it up when trying to lose weight by going Vegan (so no milk). I found Peppermint tea and have drunk this ever since (5+ years).
I have two cups each morning and only water thereafter!

Tea? Yes please, but do make sure it's loose leaf every time. Here's my celebration of that wonderful brew. Get that kettle on...

A Nice Cup of Tea

When I wake up every morning, and I’ve finished with my yawning, and I thank the Lord that I’ve been spared once more,
I make a pot of tea, and the taste to guarantee, I always let it brew before I pour.
There’s Assam and Darjeelin’, and Ceylon is quite appealing, English Breakfast always seems to hit the spot,
But make sure that pot is warm, or the brewing you will harm, and your water always must be boiling hot.
Let it sit and take on flavour, so it’s something you can savour, that first sip sets taste buds bursting with delight,
Now relax and please don’t hurry, there’s no need to sit and worry, just chill out and let that nectar make you right.
I don’t think that it’s just me, as so many love their tea, it’s the favourite drink throughout our British Nation,
Though I like a coffee too, tea is still the champion brew, and will always get unqualified ovation.
When our troubles get us down, when we wear a worried frown, as our lives seem to have turned to stormy sea,
If we’ve had some awful news, all that tension to defuse, there’s nothing better than a welcome cup of tea.
And a teapot that you share, with a friend for whom you care, is a blessing sent from heaven up above,
As you sip that brew together, why it’s “never mind the weather”, it’s a cup that goes down better with some love.
So enjoy your cup of tea, and savour it, like me, as I’m sitting here reflecting on times past,
Put your brake on and slow down, play a nice, relaxing tune, life’s too short to spend it always stuck on ‘fast’.
It sometimes seems to me, life’s just like a cup of tea, regardless of the way in which you take it,
The nature of the brew, why that’s down to me and you, and like life, depends on just how well you make it…

Gagajo Thank you for that earl grey I'm having chemo at the moment I will give it a try do you add milk?

kittypaws49 Thu 02-Mar-23 13:16:54

Yorkshire tea for me every morning, and a cup of decaf in the afternoon. I'm not in the UK but luckily there is a supermarket that stocks it and will post to all parts of the country.
For mid-morning it has to be coffee though.

I went for years only drinking coffee, Kenco instant decaffeinated, or a flat white when out. Then my ex and I split up and I bought a box of Yorkshire Tea for visitors ( ex always insisted on PG Tips) and made myself a cup to try it. After that it was tea all the way, Yorkshire of course, with full fat milk and one sugar. I do also like Earl Grey occasionally and Lady Grey is lovely on a hot day, but mainly it’s just good old YT.

I can't enjoy tea anymore I drink it only if nothing else is available...it tastes...wrong beefy? Even without milk it just doesn't do it for me any more. Sadly, I can't drink coffee either, so tend to live on Ovaltine :/

Yorkshire Tea for us. Take it on holiday to Greece as well although Yellow Label tea is a good substitute which you can usually get in Greece.

My sister lives in France and before Brexit we always took some large boxes of Yorkshire. It's so expensive to buy English tea in France they can get it but only in small box quantities.

One cup of tea with skimmed milk no sugar, first thing before getting up. Then one cup mid afternoon with a couple of biscuits.

Can't drink instant coffee at all now just have the nespresso Dolce Gusto pods. No more than 2 a day. I do worry about coffee and tea staining teeth but not enough to give it up.

Taylor's China Rose Petal tea for me. DH brings me a cup in the morning.
Really don't like Yorkshire Tea, way too strong. Only in desperation do I succumb - waving the tea bag over hot water.

It’s bean to cup coffee for me! I can drink tea, but I wouldn’t pay for it in a café. I prefer fruit teas. Twinings do a lovely raspberry and lemon one.😎😋

Kartush Thu 02-Mar-23 12:32:54

My favourite tea is camomile honey and lemon

21Tinkerbell Thu 02-Mar-23 12:31:04

No other Earl Grey will do other then M&S. We live abroad and when I go to UK/M&S I clear all the packets. I also take the packets off and leave with the staff. What a terrible waste 2 coverings.
Just a tiny drizzle of milk now. No sugar. Bliss !

I used to drink a lot of tea but really don't enjoy the taste of it at all now. I have a mug of real coffee for breakfast and then water from then on as caffeine in quantity keeps me awake.
If someone comes to see me who likes tea I use the Yorkshire tea for hard water as tea is scummy here if I use the normal version.

minxie Thu 02-Mar-23 12:11:41

Yorkshire biscuit tea is just heaven. Sadly I can’t have caffeine past 4pm now so I’ve moved to fruity teas in the pm

Paperbackwriter Thu 02-Mar-23 11:59:36

Going off tea was always the first sign of being pregnant, for me. I'd be back on it after the first few months though. Twinings English Breakfast tea.

I haven’t drunk ordinary tea for a good 35 years. DH was told to stop drinking milk because of high Cholesterol long before statins were around. We both tried other alternatives but didn’t find anything we both enjoyed until I happened across what we both now call tea but was crossly informed by a doctor one day that it wasn’t tea but an infusion. It’s simply lemon peel with boiling water poured over. Made in a jug and chilled it’s very refreshing in hot weather as well.
I’ve been known to take lemons on holiday with me.

I am absolutely anti low-fat anything and everything, sttrangely then, in tea it has to be skimmed milk - I think semi and whole milk interfere with the flavour. I’ve some fruit tea, and a concoction of cocoa nibs, coconut and marshmallows. I do travel with tea, just in case.

pen50 Thu 02-Mar-23 11:48:11

I start the day with tea, and drink it through the afternoon and evening. I usually drink masala tea at home (black tea with added pepper, ginger, cinnamon....) and I have it builder's strength, with quite a lot of full fat milk (no sugar). I switch to coffee (freshly ground and filtered) after the first mug and then back to tea at lunchtime.

usuallyright Thu 02-Mar-23 11:48:07

I am a Tea drinker, but, when I am out of the house, I drink Coffee, because a bad cup if Coffee tastes better than a bad cup of Tea

Bromley Thu 02-Mar-23 11:43:30

I dislike Tea. I’ve tried Red Bush,Green and Earl Grey too.
I now drink Ginger which I quite enjoy.

Philippa111 Thu 02-Mar-23 11:37:00

Mostly coffee for me with the occasional cup of tea... and then its Cornish Tea... Smugglers Brew. It doesn't have the bitter taste of many teas. But I also take Waitrose Decaf which is pretty good. Also any Pukka tea for a decf option.

I can't stand Rooibos, even the smell of it but I have some here for friends who love it!

SillyNanny321 Thu 02-Mar-23 11:33:34

Two large mugs of Yorkshire tea before starting the day! Made as my Pop used to call tea - Busmans Tea - strong as possible just tiny amount of milk! Then several more through the day! Problems always seem easier to deal with if I have a big mug of tea in my hand!

knspol Thu 02-Mar-23 11:30:54

I take my own tea bags with me wherever I travel, even, like GagaJo, to China. If I'm upset, worried, anxious then always go for a cup of tea. Can't understand these TV progs where people immediately reach for alcohol when upset.

Matelda Thu 02-Mar-23 11:26:19

A person I know enjoyed a holiday on the tea plantation in Sri Lanka where they produce Yorkshire Tea. Somehow, I was disappointed to hear that, a bit like finding out the truth about Santa Claus.....

SachaMac Thu 02-Mar-23 11:23:54

I find coffee can be quite harsh on the stomach Froglady I suffer from bad acid reflux and my GP suggested I cut it out or down. I limit myself to one nice coffee mid morning now and it’s definitely helped.

JRTW2 Thu 02-Mar-23 11:19:41

Tea when happy and tea when sad. It’s a cure all. Nothing fancy. “Dockyard worker” tea with milk (I’m originally from Portsmouth)!
