Meal Deals

Meal Deals in Wales will be subject to bans on certain foods from 2025.

As someone who used to sometimes buy a lunch meal deal from M&S or Boots, which never seemed that unhealthy to (perhaps uneducated!) me, consisting of a prawn mayonnaise on oat bread sandwich, crisps (!) and water or fruit juice, I never felt guilty.

Are meal deals a real health problem or is this too much interfering by a Nanny State?

Shinamae I think you will find the square seaweed pieces are generally fried salted (sometimes sweetened) seaweed but the "crispy" seaweed is fried cabbage.
Either can have sugar/glucose added.

If you have fried seaweed in a restaurant it will usually be cabbage and could have a sort of fried fish powder (fish floss) on it.
Years ago I was told it was it was made with kale - as dark cabbages crisp better than paler varieties.

As someone said earlier, there are lots of things in meal deals we wouldn't have at home.
I suppose it's another "read the label" situation.

I usually resent interference - but, in light of the obesity crisis - especially child obesity, something has to be done.

Most people don't read the labels, just the price tickets.
Supermarkets constantly encourage unhealthy eating with their many promotions, so there should be some opposing force, surely?

Otherwise, the NHS will be overwhelmed, people will have a (short) lifetime of miserable ill health and pass on their food/eating habits to the next generation.

The thing is banning isnt going to solve the problem, there needs to be healthy cheap items that people can eat on the go. Otherwise if you are doing a 12 hour shift with no particular facilities for lunch you are going to grab a Greggs. It's cheap convenient and requires no fridge etc.

I never quite understand why crisps are almost invariably included. But then I’ve never been mad about crisps - except in the past few years Walkers Sensations Lime and Coriander - can make a pig of myself on those.

Back in the day when we had a family GP, I saw my GP in the local supermarket. He went through my shopping and told me off for buying white bread!

Deals such as they have in Boots are tempting - if you're buying a sandwich and for not much more you can add a bag of crisps and a drink, you'd think why not! Over the years crisps have become an accompaniment to sandwiches, for some reason, they used not be.

It's a bit like those mid-price chains who serve panini with fries, just why?

It's the sheer availability of so much food, at all times of the day, that's making people fat.

I don't think the tide can be turned.

I queued behind mine once, in the Subway queue!

Seaweed…Checked it out and feel vindicated, but thanks for the advice anyway

Ha ha Shinamae - great!
Seaweed (Laver) (65%), Olive Oil, Sea Salt

Of course though it does mean it’s 35% oil and salt! grin
(Just teasing - I realise it’s olive oil!)

Georgesgran Thu 29-Jun-23 15:48:48

Used to see my GP in the wine aisle in Sainsbury’s. Often, possibly too often!

PS. I love laver although not had it for a few years now, but my dad used to go and pick it off the rocks and boil it and then boil it again in vinegar and then sit with a pallet knife on a wooden board going through it to get all the bits out! it was bloody lovely stuff but very labour intensive.!!
At its best with bacon and pepper….

The key thing is that the ban will be totally ineffective.

Someone who buys a 'sandwich, crisps, and full fat coke' meal deal for lunch every day, is not going to buy a 'sandwich apple and bottle of water' meal deal because that is all that is on offer as a meal deal. They are going to continue to buy a lunch of sandwich, crisps and full fat coke as seperate items and just grumble about the increased cost.

Callistemon21 Fri 30-Jun-23 22:29:34

Well, now it has been admitted at last that aspartame could be carcinogenic will fizzy drinks be banned altogether?

Laverbread 🤮

Callistemon the evidence for this is very sparse and there has been plenty of critiscism of the decision and there has been extensive criticsm of other such declarations made by the World Health Organisation.

I avoid them because they taste so horrible and the after taste lingers for hours.. The sugar tax has been a disaster for me because when the manufacturers took the sugar out of soft drinks, they poured the artificial sweeteners in and it is now almost impossible for me to drink any soft drink because of the sweetener in it. I am reduced to drinking water when we go out for a drink. or stop anywhere, unless the venue makes it own non-alcoholic cocktails or soft drinks.

Callistemon21 Sat 01-Jul-23 11:10:06

I avoid it too.

Callistemon21 Sat 01-Jul-23 11:13:53

Fever Tree mixes contain no artificial sweeteners, neither do some other makes.

Lime and soda…

Too much interfering. If I don’t want crisps I don’t go for the meal deal. If I do, that’s my business!
I don’t get this, it’s no “deal” if you don’t want the product.
And crisps are hardly the spawn of the devil. Credit us with some intelligence! .

Indeed.

I'll watch my own diet, TYVM.

I know what portions I need, I count well. We all do.

When I was a teenager/young woman it was rare to see an overweight child or young person. (I am 73). When I started my first job at 16, I would have toast and butter for breakfast. Then over to the shop at lunchtime for a sandwich. crisps, cream cake and a drink. This was every day. Most people in the office did the same. Then home for my mother's homemade pies, fried spam, chips cooked in lard and puddings. Chocolate bars in between. I did virtually no exercise. I was as thin as Twiggy. So what has gone wrong?

pascal30 Sat 01-Jul-23 16:07:57

It beats me why people don't make sandwiches at home to take with them... it takes 5 minutes, saves so much money and you know what's in them..
