What a twit (sponge cake)

Neighbours coming to tea later (belated return invitation) so I’ve made a Vic.sponge. Didn’t wait long enough for it to cool before picking up to peel the lining paper off the bottom - one half started to break! Obvs. that will be the bottom layer - I dare say it’s going to show when slicing, but heigh ho, can’t do owt about it now.

I once made Xmas puds and was about to get ready to steam them, although they hadn’t filled the basins as full as usual. I glanced at a worktop and there was a bowl with all the dried fruit sitting in alcohol. I had to empty out all the basins to stir in the fruit.

My 'cooked' version would involve toasting brown bread, smearing on the marmite while it was still hot and mashing the ripe bananas on top.

DGD was telling me about a disastrous cake she made in her cookery class at school.
She picked an American recipe measured in cups with unusual ingredients including American chocolate and said it was awful.
She said her pasta dish was delicious, however!

Yesterday I made a couple of banana cakes with fruit, didn't weigh anything, which I would normally do, accidentally melted the butter, threw it all in together, whizzed it up and they were better than any I'd made before.

We call it a 'picky' tea - often to use up bits and pieces from the fridge or freezer!

American chocolate, peanut butter, I think and I don't know what else. Presumably eggs, butter, flour, sugar? Too sweet and too oily, apparently.

I made chocolate cake years ago from the Blue Peter recipe and no-one guessed the secret ingredient wink

I once put a Victoria sandwich cake in a WI competition and I hadn't peeled the paper off the bottom of the cakes.

We used to cook in pairs at school and friend and I only discovered the currants after our not so spotted dick had gone into the steamer. Too much chat and not much concentration! They wouldn’t stick on to the outside either so there was no disguising our failure.

I made a sponge pudding recently and was so pleased with myself as I don’t often make these and mixed the butter, sugar and flour together and put in pudding bowl on top of marmalade. It didn’t look quite right so I looked at recipe and I had forgotten to add beaten eggs. Scooped it all out (with bits of marmalade!) beat the eggs and stirred them in. Turned out OK.

How did you cook this pud? Microwave?

It was fine in the end. One of the neighbours (Japanese) remarked twice on how nice it was, so when they left I asked if she’d like a piece to take home - and she did.
Saved me and dh pigging the whole lot, anyway. The 🐷 factor is why I only ever make cakes if we have guests.

We've all done daft things Witzend but I'm sure it will taste delicious.

I once made a Vic sponge and forgot to put the eggs in. I whipped it out of the oven pretty sharpish and bunged them in, giving them a quick whizz round. They tasted all right, thank goodness. Silly me.

I've made bread and butter pudding and forgotten the eggs - so it was really a stodgy-bread-and-hot-milk-pudding. I made mushroom risotto and forgot the mushrooms. I made a lovely looking bakewell tart and dropped it on the floor after taking it out of the oven - much to the distress of the visiting plumber who heard my wailing (I'd forgotten he was there) and came charging down the stairs. My most recent mishap was forgetting the sugar in a blueberry tart that looked beautiful but was very, very sharp.

When my friend and I worked in a cafe together she used to make lovely chocolate, apple and walnut slices. One day they came out of the oven looking very flat and peculiar. She'd forgotten the baking powder! So she put them on sale as "Continental" slices and they sold like hot cakes (sorry!)

At least I remembered the bananas.
Although I melted the butter, trying to soften it.

I made blackberry jam today, thought it was not setting so boiled it a bit longer.
It might need a hammer and chisel.

I was making fruit scones, all rolled out and on the baking sheet, ready to go into the oven. What's that... 4 eggs..... I'd forgotten to add the eggs which indeed explained why it took more milk than usual to bind the mix.
I debated binning the lot but the oven was already hot and waiting so in they went. Straight from the oven, with butter, they were just about passable....not as scones.... But something edible....almost. Once cooled they were definitely a bin job.

One of my ‘best’ was making fairy cakes for Gds’ school bake sale - only being away with the fairies when the time came to put the mixture in the cake cases, I put it into 2 sandwich tins instead.
Realised after a few minutes in the oven but it was beyond help.
Had to start again - and nip out for more eggs.

I made the cake for my daughter's wedding last weekend. There were nine layers of cake in total. One of them stuck slightly to the tin and a piece broke off. I just fitted it all together and carried on icing it. Nobody seemed to notice.

Mind you, my scones are terrible.
