Non-alcoholic wine

We have been invited to a charity dinner on Friday.
I am on morphine (well fentanyl) patches and should not drink, so for this reason I try to avoid attending these kind of "do's".
I am fed up with orange, cola, and such although I have found a non-alcoholic lager from Becks which I quite like, but my bladder can't cope with more than half a pint or I'm off to the loo all evening (difficult when you aren't very mobile).
Can anyone recommend a white wine that's palatable so I'm not constantly drawing attention to myself? All suggestions appreciated.

If I drink gin and tonic it’s nearly always Tanquery 0%. I can scarcely tell the difference. Much nicer and a lot cheaper than Seedlip gin.

The last few times I've bought it, I've gone for the Tanqueray and it's very nice. My children have bought me a few non-alcohol 'gins', some of which were nice (Cedar's was good), some not so - I think there was a Lidl one which wasn't pleasant at all. I believe there is a 0% version of Gordon's pink gin out now, although I've not seen it in our local supermarkets yet.

I consider myself to be quite a wine connoisseur but have cut down a bit (it seems to affect me more as I’ve got older). I’ve tried loads of different non-alcoholic wine. My preferences now are for sparkling and white. I haven’t found a red yet that’s really drinkable. My choices are Noughty sparkling white and rosé which I buy from Ocado. They are the driest of the ones I’ve tried. Fizzeroo from M&S would be a second choice. For white I buy white Torres Natureo from Waitrose and Ocado. They have a red also and is the best of the reds I’ve tried but prefer the white. Other retailers may stock. I think these wines are better because they lift the alcohol out rather than making some grape juice concoction. Good luck.

Might appletise look like wine?

VioletSky Wed 02-Aug-23 21:57:59

I really like lime and soda, you could pretend it has vodka in it lol

Try not overthink it. Do you really notice the contents of anyone's glass while you are out. I am not keen on carbonated drinks and juices leave me feeling acidy so I am happy with iced tap water with a slice of lemon or mint. Not even fussed what sort of glass it's in.

Sorry. 0.5 units per pint, 0.9 ABV.

Jaxjacky Wed 02-Aug-23 21:09:32

Not non alcoholic, but at home, when we have guests, I drink Bavaria shandy 0.9 units per can.

There can't be much call for non alcoholic wine because when our DD1 was pregnant she asked for a particular bottle with her meal (at a Hilton Hotel), and when her husband was reading the label he noticed it was 2 years out of date!

Always puzzled as to why there are so few decent non or low alcohol options. I loathe plain water and would prefer not to consume sugar laden drinks. I havent yet found any restaurant or bar serving decent non alcohol wine. For home consumption I have found a very nice dry non-alcohol cider called Sassy on the web site Wise Bartender. You can search for both no alcohol and low sugar drinks. I have bought red and white wine as well but havent tried them yet.

Magrithea, I know the one you are talking about which is one Slimming World uses. It is delicious.

Mamma66 Wed 02-Aug-23 19:19:41

Our local pub makes delicious mocktails. The non alcoholic version of a strawberry daiquiri is absolutely lovely and as it’s in a martini style glass you won’t have to be running to the loo. Failing that the Nosecco isn’t bad

Magrithea Wed 02-Aug-23 18:54:11

At a recent do there was a non-alcoholic version of Pimms, alongside the real thing, made with lemonade and balsamic vinegar - surprisingly good!

Magrithea Wed 02-Aug-23 18:53:08

I've yet to find a wine with no alcohol that is palatable! Mostly they're like flavoured water. Try and find one with a low alcohol, go to a Majestic wine shop and ask the staff there. Supermarkets aren't much use if you want something out of the ordinary

Have you tried Kombucha? Hip pop is a nice make. And not too sweet either.
And the “pretend” gin is surprisingly good too.

I love kombucha, but wouldn't expect to find it in restaurants.

Seedlip gin is nice, but I don't want to drink gin with a meal. I'd rather have a passable glass of 0% wine, but it is rarely available. I'm sure it would sell if it were.

silverlining48 Wed 02-Aug-23 18:50:44

I like elderflower cordial with sparkling water.

BeneathTheHowlingStars Wed 02-Aug-23 16:26:06

I don't drink alcohol because of all the medication I have to take but going to the pub is much more pleasant these days due to all the alcohol free options. The 0% Guinness is lovely and tastes exactly like the ordinary one. There is also alcohol free Kopparberg cider in a few flavours which are very tasty and refreshing. Asda alcohol free 'gin' with Tonic water and a slice of lemon is nice too.

I have a 00 beer when i'm out for a meal and put it in a
wine glass. Does the trick for me.

I have been recently told by someone that the non alcoholic gin they had was lovely, or I quite like just the tonics with ice and a slice nice too.

PinkCosmos Wed 02-Aug-23 14:28:04

The non alcoholic wines all taste very sweet to me, though they have improved recently.

I struggle to know what to drink if I don't drink wine. I am not keen on beer, spirits or coke

I end up drinking either Old Jamaica Ginger Ale, Appletise, lime and soda or ,occasionally, shandy.

When we are abroad I drink Nestea Lemon Ice Tea. It is the same as Lipton's Lemon Ice Tea. Very refreshing in the heat and non alcoholic. Not too sweet or high in calories. I don't think they sell it in pubs or restaurants here though.

Doodledog Wed 02-Aug-23 13:09:41

I have to say that the cost of a soda with ice and a slice is often extortionate! I paid £2.50 in a restaurant recently, whereas in some places it counts as water and is free.

I don't mind paying to sit in a heated place and be served a drink, but £2.50 for a small glass of water is ridiculous. I dread to think what it would cost in London.

Amalegra Wed 02-Aug-23 12:35:13

There is gradually a sea change coming to pubs and restaurants in that some are offering a better range of na and soft drinks. I often have just soda water, lemon and ice if there is nothing available other than the usual cola, lemonade etc. or coffee, but often the cups are so small making it expensive. I don’t drink for health reasons and socialising is often a challenge. Often people think I am just being awkward when I bemoan the lack of alcohol alternatives. One reception I went to had nothing but the usual colas etc and not even coffee. The next was awash with wonderful choices. So it does vary

ExDancer Wed 02-Aug-23 12:30:02

I must say I agree the zero wines and beers are pretty disgusting, and I;m afraid I find Eisberg disgusting (all a matter of taste). I would happily be the designated driver but at under 5ft tall I cannot reach the pedals safely in my husband's huge car and he won't be seen in my little Corsa - the great big silly snob!
Back to the subject - do pubs and restaurants generally have zero gin? Is it tolerable with tonic?
I'd never heard of it!

icanhandthemback Wed 02-Aug-23 12:17:58

I haven't drunk alcohol for nearly 30 years now and it seems to bother other people more than it bothers me. I can't do sugary drinks and can't have caffeine late in the day so I can't do the only sugar free option of Cola. The only other option seems to be slimline tonic which I can't stand. Occasionally, if I feel like a sugar hit, I drink lime and soda. I have got very used to tap water and now enjoy it as much as people are enjoying their alcoholic drinks. The difference is, I remain clear headed (well, as clear as I ever am) and don't get over emotional.
