I am no MasterChef but do enjoy cooking. I find making evening meals quite therapeutic and love the process of preparing, cooking and serving. It does not need to be elaborate as long as it is made and served with love is what is important to me. How about you do you like to cook/bake does it make you feel happy and contented or are you a reluctant Cook?

growstuff, Just out of curiousity, What is the problem with fried food. Is it just a personal dislike, and we all have those, or a principled one, if so, this is a conscience-based food choice I have not come across before.

I grew up in a home where everything was grilled not fried because my mother did not like food cooked in fat or oil. She was a slightly fussy eater. It is a habit, which as a whole has stayed with me. A traditional cooked breakfast, or rather brunch, in our household, involves the grill, griddle and hob, but not a frying pan, but one of the joys of the air fryer is pommes de terre parmentier, potatoes cubed, lightly sprayed with oil and cooked in the air fryer.

But ... but ... but I wouldn't dream of eating fried potatoes - ever - and I never fry bacon or sausages either. Pizza is almost pure carb - I don't think I've eaten one for the last 20 years.

I love fried potatoes with an egg. Sometimes with mushrooms too.

Not often, but that's my fry-up.

I see the spam is still here.
Never eat it myself.

Fish, stirfry or a one pan meals are all meals prepared from fresh ingredients in the domestic kitchen, usually by the person who is going to consume them. That is home cooking.

Non-home cooked meals at home are takeaways, any foodstuff in packaging that is just heated through before consuming.

As so much depends on what we eat, health, well being, life itself, I am prepared to give food the time necessary to prepare nutritious meals that are enjoyable, because food nurtures the mind as well as the body.

Anything less is self neglect and shows a disregard for the wellbeing of those who may be dependent on us for the food they eat.

I agree M0nica, the indifference to what people eat shows an absence of joy, whether eating alone or with family or dining out.

I’ve known people like that (usually very thin) and they’re not really happy people. *Bread is the staff of LIFE.*

That's a gross generalisation. Cooking bores me to tears - I'm much happier doing things I enjoy. I enjoy people's company without having to eat.

^The rest of the time I fall back on fish, stir fry or some one pan meal that’s quick and easy.^

That is just as much home cooking as a joint, casserole or shpherds pie.

Not really! And there's much less washing up to do.

I used to take a good deal of pride in putting home cooked food on the table when there were two of us. Now, apart from the odd family roast dinner, it hardly seems worth the effort, but a couple of times a month I will batch cook something for the freezer - a casserole, bolognese sauce, shepherds or fish pies. The rest of the time I fall back on fish, stir fry or some one pan meal that’s quick and easy.

I am a teacher by profession. But apart from teaching I am working separately with cooking. Cooking different recipes is my passion. I used to spend most of my time with it in my kitchen. kitchensty.com/

I class it with maccas and pies, not the best, homemade or not! Too much flour , carbs and fat. The tomato puree is often loaded with sugar, too. One or two slices, fine of course.

Pizza is not an unhealthy food.

Nanna8
Depends on what you put on your pizza. Compared to eating fried eggs, sausages, bacon and fried potatoes (or anything fried!) every day… that is far unhealthier than eating a slice or two of pizza everyday.

Pizzas are really easy to make. When the kids were at home I often made them. I don’t think they are good for you, though. Now and then wouldn’t hurt.

I find pizza quite easy to make.

We use a hot stone, in the outdoor cooker. No heat in the house, dough is easy to make and form, healthy, and children love.

I’ve just spent a week at my partners and have reached the point of wanting to scream and run out of the house when it comes to meals. I can’t wait to be back in my own home where I can have egg on toast for tea.

Nope don’t like cooking. Far more interesting things to do in my opinion. As I got older I find it more boring. If I do I’ll cook Italian food mainly and roast dinners , both of which the family like.

I keep a list of or favourite meals, some that take little effort and some that take time, so that when I just can’t think of what to have, I can hopefully get inspiration.

Callistemon21 That word - Pizza - caught my eye.

As someone who never has enough pizza in my life, I find a really good wood-fired oven pizza and a salad is one of my favorite meals out! Totally satisfying, not just a snack. Mmm, mmm… 😋 🍕

I’ve always said - if you’re ever trying to solve a problem or or having a tough time - just add pepperoni!

I have had home-made pizzas (with home-made dough) made by an Italian lady, baked in an outdoor wood fired pizza oven and they do bear no resemblance to the ones you can buy in ths shops, even the good quality ones.

When you consider how important food is to our continuing life, not to mention our health and well being.

I find it quite shocking that so many people are indifferent to what they eat and are only interesting in filling their guts as quickly and cheaply as possible. In other countries, just as economically strapped as us,people are willing to spend a greater portion of their income on food and are more selective about what they eat.

I always think pizza is a snack, not a proper meal.

Mojack26 Thu 28-Sept-23 23:45:22

Love cooking and baking, always have. I very rarely eat prepared food unless it's something like Pizza. Even when I was working used slow cooker and batch cooked at weekends. My children rarely had processed food, and in turn both my girls cook. Like you I also find it therapeutic, healthy and enjoyable. Also grow my own fruit and veg.

I have always loved cooking right from the days of rationing. I still make my own bread and cook everything from scratch. The days of making six Christmas cakes however are past.
My children used to do French exchanges and could never believe my cakes didn’t come from a patisserie. My Danish pastries won competitions and when I moved the WI members said that now some one else would be able to win the marmalade competition. I also used to demonstrate yeast cookery. Trouble is my husband would never eat out. “Why eat out when you have a good cook at home”

I understand. I spend at least 4 hours a day in kitchen and dining room. We cook well, why spend money, leave home and be disappointed by food prepared not as we prefer and noisy restaurants?

4 hours?!!
I try and spend no longer than an average of 30 mins!

DH has taken over breakfast. Yippee.
He no longer chooses to have lunch. Again, yippee.

I try to do healthy on the whole. I just spend minimal time joining the ingredients together.
I eat raw veg anyway[will do cooked for DH]. And I find myself more and more drawn to salad. Cant think why!

DH gets his own breakfast (I would just get in his way!), quite often he makes lunch for us both and I'm mostly in charge in the evenings.
He's a good peeler of vegetables.
