Should beans be part of an English fry up? Should Yorkshire puddings be served with any roast?

I don’t think beans should go anywhere near a traditional English breakfast, all that sugary sauce spoils the flavours, and tinned tomatoes should be illegal on a fry up!

Also it seems to be increasingly popular to serve Yorkshire pudding with any roast, when the beef is resting and the magnificent puddings come out of the oven is a glorious moment.
I think they should be preserved for beef only……having said that if someone else prepared them and served them with lamb for instance then I would feel city bound to eat them😉.

Beans are totally part of a full English breakfast, although I agree about the tinned tomatoes. Tomatoes should be fresh and grilled. My English breakfast favourite is eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, grilled tomato and beans. Some have mushrooms, but I hate them so avoid like the plague. Some think hash browns have no place, sauteed potatoes is a good substitute. Eat what you like - its not written in stone. And of course Yorkshire puddings should be served with any roast dinner, I love them.

Well I love baked beans breakfast dinner tea anytime as long as the reduced sugar ones🤪 but saying that I haven’t had a cooked breakfast for years I’m more of a porridge oats and fresh fruit person for many months. I love Yorkshire pud also especially with beef with a Sunday roast.

Who are we to be spouting off about what other people are eating. Life's too short to be fretting about other peoples dietary habits. I eat what I want, when I want

As children we always had Yorkshire Pudding with gravy before having our roast beef dinner.

Me too Shelflife!

Bean’s definitely

As a student in Leeds living in digs we were frequently served Yorkshire pud and gravy before anything and everything. Delicious

Beans? Only if you like them.
Yorkshire puds? Well we eat toad-in-the-hole with pork sausages and my DGC used to ask me to make them big Yorkshire puds with meat, veg and gravy.
My childhood memory is a portion of pud served before the beef.
I only make small ones for beef, but I’d do them for other meals if asked.

Does it matter? People should eat what they want to eat. I eat Yorkshire pudding once a year on Christmas Day with my vegetarian roast.

Beans in moderation are healthier in any form they are full of protein. A lot better than the typical fry up or breakfast bars and muffins that are full of sugar.

Baked beans with low sugar and salt are healthy. I like them and if we have a cooked breakfast they are always included. Slimming world recommend beans ahead of cheese on jacket potatoes.

Salyi I too am a Yorkshire lass! I prefer to Yorkshire pudding with beef but can eat it with any meat. As children we always had Yorkshire Pudding with gravy before having our roast beef dinner.
I can eat baked beans with a traditional English breakfast, although I prefer just cereals and toast or smoked salmon with poached egg.

PaperMonster Thu 28-Sept-23 19:49:09

Used to love beans on a fry up back when I could eat beans. And a Yorkie goes well with any roast!

TerriBull Thu 28-Sept-23 19:20:26

Why not beans?, as long as they are Heinz, preferably in a ramekin, although I only have that type of breakfast in a hotel.

If my grandchildren are with us for Sunday roast dinner and we have roast chicken then I'll do Yorkshires because they always want them, although I kind of consider them as more of an accompaniment to roast beef, but others have said, why the rules!. One of my sons always insists on pigs in blankets with Christmas turkey, otherwise I wouldn't bother with those either. I don't really want Yorkshires with Christmas dinner, too much with the umpteen vegetables and stuffing, unless the grandchildren are with us on that day.....I tend to indulge their requests grin

Has anyone tried baked beans in a Yorkshire pudding?

I'm sure we've had toad-in-the-hole with baked beans.

lixy Thu 28-Sept-23 19:05:47

Beans are fine in their place - and that is not anywhere near my bacon and mushrooms thanks all the same. But each to their own so I serve a buffet style cooked breakfast on the very rare occasion I cook one.

Tinned tomatoes? No thanks.

Yorkshire puds? Oh yes! With roasts or beef stew. Mary Berry's recipe doesn't let me down.

Jaxjacky Thu 28-Sept-23 18:56:39

I like beans, even cold, so yes. Yorkshires I consider take u too much space, I could fit in more veg without one.

BlueBelle Thu 28-Sept-23 18:00:10

Beans …why not tinned tomatoes why not, love them
I ve never heard of potato pancakes We did have friend mash which is close to hash browns that I really like
Yorkshire puds go with anything and everything I don’t eat meat so my yorkies are always on the plate if I had a roast

I hate silly rules of only, this with this ….anything with anything for me

Nannarose Thu 28-Sept-23 17:30:06

I think 'hash browns' are just the American version of 'potato pancakes' that we would often have at all sorts of eals, including breakfast.

Nannarose Thu 28-Sept-23 17:28:47

Salti

Nannarose have you tried making them with bread flour? That,I find, makes all the difference.

Yes! But thanks for checking!

MaizieD Thu 28-Sept-23 16:47:58

Ah, pigs in blankets (just a little diversion, this)

I rarely cook a turkey at Christmas these days, but my DD insists we have pigs in blankets regardless of what's being served.

Pigs in blankets with venison, anyone?

That's enough. As you were, ladies... back to yorkshire puds and baked beans..

SachaMac Thu 28-Sept-23 15:55:17

I prefer my beans on their own on toast or with cheese in a jacket potato rather than as part of a breakfast. I wouldn’t object to a few on my plate with a breakfast but don’t see the need.
I like Yorkshire Puds with a roast beef dinner & sometimes with a beef stew but I don’t like them with a roast Turkey Christmas lunch, there’s more than enough with pigs in blankets, stuffing etc.

I'm a Yorkshire lass and love Yorkshire pudding. We have it with any roast or stew/casserole etc. I think the frozen ones are rubbish however. This is a proper one!

That is one outstanding pudding!

For me, the plate space occupied by beans at breakfast would be better kept for black pudding ( Stornoway if possible), haggis, mushrooms, potato scone, or an extra square sliced sausage.
However, it’s your breakfast, so have whatever you like!

nightowl Thu 28-Sept-23 15:47:40

Yorkshire puddings are the best part of the meal, and for that reason I would say Yorkshire puddings are fine just as they are. My Yorkshire mum served them with any meat, my dad had his, as big as a dinner plate, with gravy before the meat and veg, as was customary when he was a child. In my family we now eat them without meat but with every veggie variation on a Sunday roast.

Despite years of practice, my mum always said her puddings weren’t very good but to me, they were the best I have ever tasted before or since.

Louella12 What a great idea, I think a Yorkshire pudding would taste really nice with a cooked breakfast.

A good idea.

Better than those pre-formed hash browns!
