Should beans be part of an English fry up? Should Yorkshire puddings be served with any roast?

I don’t think beans should go anywhere near a traditional English breakfast, all that sugary sauce spoils the flavours, and tinned tomatoes should be illegal on a fry up!

Also it seems to be increasingly popular to serve Yorkshire pudding with any roast, when the beef is resting and the magnificent puddings come out of the oven is a glorious moment.
I think they should be preserved for beef only……having said that if someone else prepared them and served them with lamb for instance then I would feel city bound to eat them😉.

Nannarose have you tried making them with bread flour? That,I find, makes all the difference.

One of my favourite Saturday morning breakfasts is baked beans on toast sprinkled with grated cheese yummy

I often have that for lunch on Saturdays. Sometimes with a jacket potato instead of toast.

Everybody has their own tastes and there's nothing at all wrong with that.

For me a 'Full English' is bacon, perhaps sausage, fried egg, fried real tomatoes, mushrooms and fried bread. Not a baked bean in sight.

Yorkshire puds with beef only.

GG13 Baked beans with grated cheese on them (they have to be hot enough to melt the cheese) is the only way to make the damn things edible grin

Hash browns have no place on a full English breakfast, they are an American import. Definitely no tinned tomatoes but I don't mind baked beans.
Yorkshire puddings with beef only. Its just wrong to have them with any other meat. Lamb has mint sauce, pork with apple sauce and sage and onion stuffing, chicken and turkey have their own accompanying trimmings.
Call me a traditionalist.

Well, honestly, I can make them as well as Aunt Bessie, but nowhere near as well as my 2 nans, my mum, my MiL, my sister or one of my nieces!
And of course, I've googled Sydney Smith "Madam, I have been looking for a person who dislikes gravy all my life. Let us swear eternal friendship"

Maggiemaybe Thu 28-Sept-23 12:00:06

Tesco, eh? I’ll be trying them.

Maggiemaybe Thu 28-Sept-23 11:59:29

Yes and yes for me. But I can’t make decent Yorkshires either, Nannarose, so Aunt Bessie has to help out. No, they’re not as good as a lovely homemade one, but mine are very far from that.

I think it's fine to serve Yorkshire with any meat, but we always eat it first, with gravy. When I was a child we had it every Sunday, whatever the joint.
However, it is one of the few things that I cannot cook! I'm pretty competent at most stuff, but my Yorkshires are only 'ok'. So I tend to reserve the anxiety of making them for roast beef only (and of course, toad in the hole!).
I have followed every piece of advice on here over the years about making good Yorkshire pud'ns, and not one of them works for me.

Tesco do great Yorkshires, look in the meat section in chilled foods, not frozen ones.

It’s the 21st century, surely we can have beans if we want, as for Yorkshire puddings if I fancy a yorkie with roast pork/chicken/lamb or even Christmas roast turkey I will have one.

One of my favourite Saturday morning breakfasts is baked beans on toast sprinkled with grated cheese yummy.

I have to try that now 😄
Serve and eat whatever you want is my motto.Beans are good fibre.Yorkshires go with anything.

Nannarose Thu 28-Sept-23 11:54:46

And also, much as I dislike tinned baked beans with an English breakfast, they also are a cheap way to make it stretch.

Nannarose Thu 28-Sept-23 11:53:46

PS: Isn't there a witty Sydney Smith quote (thought to be the model for Henry Tilney) about not liking gravy?
Someone will know.

I always include baked beans in a 'full fry-up' breakfast. They go particularly well with my breakfast (or any time, actually) favourite: Stornoway Black Pudding. Food of the Gods...

Poppyred Thu 28-Sept-23 11:50:07

Love baked beans with an English breakfast …. Not the same without them.

Yorkshire puds with roast beef only.

Ailidh Thu 28-Sept-23 11:31:17

No and no.

Beans on toast for breakfast - yum.
Beans getting my bacon all beany - yuk.

Yorkshire puddings Only with roast beef and a decent size or more than one, not the piddling little bun tin effort you sometimes get.

And don't get me started on the ubiquity of gravy - why slosh brownness over every roast meal? It should be a discreet pool inside one of the yorkies with roast beef.

IMHO. OVMV. 😋

Spinnaker Thu 28-Sept-23 11:30:47

Let's go the whole hog and stick a Yorkshire pud on a fry up grin

Marmin Thu 28-Sept-23 11:28:43

This is going to cause a stir!
Ful madames for breakfast here. Fava beans in a home made onion, chili and tomato sauce. With two poached eggs on top.

Oh, and I make my own baked beans with absolutely no sugar!

Greyduster Thu 28-Sept-23 11:25:44

Apparently, my grandfather always had sugar on his Yorkshire pudding!

Glorianny Thu 28-Sept-23 11:20:45

If you like beans have them! We like them.
Yorkshire Pudding was never originally restricted to beef it was cooked in the fat of any roast meat and was served first with gravy to fill up people.
I doubt if anyone is still doing that.
The roast beef tradition came later so it's just another adaptation. Like the shape. Small round ones are usually now served. My GCs were recently introduced to one of my dad's favourites, saving some YPs for afters and serving them with Golden Syrup. No idea where that came from,, but they loved it! Have them when and how you like them.

Chacon a son gout. To each his own. Strictly speaking Yorkshire pudding should not be served with any meat, but eaten separately with gravy before the main.

You're not allowed!!

I don't like beans with a fry-up but I could eat Yorkshire pudding with anything!!

cornergran Thu 28-Sept-23 11:16:38

We’ve just had a cooked breakfast. Enjoyed the beans grin and yes, we have Yorkshire pudding with any roast meal. Oh dear smile.

merlotgran Thu 28-Sept-23 11:15:00

I have to eat gf Yorkies and they’re a challenge to make so I rarely bother, usually opting for frozen or packet mix.

If I go out for Sunday Lunch with the family I ask for my Yorkshire Pud to be served separately if it’s not gf as there are always plenty of takers. 😂

eddiecat78 Thu 28-Sept-23 11:14:40

We stayed at a lovely b&b in Wales once where the landlady said she hadn't got any tomatoes for our breakfast so she'd put a slice of pineapple on instead

Salti Thu 28-Sept-23 11:13:27

I'm a Yorkshire lass and love Yorkshire pudding. We have it with any roast or stew/casserole etc. I think the frozen ones are rubbish however. This is a proper one!
