I’ve just had an operation (all is fine) but I have been fancying rice pudding and fish pie.
For me real comfort food especially rice pudding.

What do others turn to?

My granny used to eat that, but she called it saps. Have you heard it called that dogsmother?

I'm glad you are fine after surgery. smile
My comfort food has always been bread and milk. White bread is best for this. Break it into pieces and cover it with hot milk and sugar. I love it.

I love this too! grin

Scrambled egg on toast with a nice cup of tea is my go to ,not bothered about puds.

Bread and milk was standard fare for older babies/young children in the past, wasn’t it? I’ve certainly often read about it in old novels.

I particularly remember a quote about a child* who was ill in bed being given buttered toast and a picture book, instead of bread and milk and lessons.
*given the context, from a family that was certainly not very poor.

Shepherds pie, mum's stew with dumplings, rice pudding , jam roll poly, could go on. Everything traditional since shool days, had a marvelous school cook.

I have so many, but distinctly remember the hot, buttered toast with a cup of tea given to me after the birth of my children. I was in the process of making a roast dinner when I went into labour with my son, so was particularly hungry when he arrived a short time after!

I still enjoy bread and milk now and then. I'm glad that others remember it. I don't know it's origin. I'm Devonshire, but it was probably popular all over the place. Especially with poorer people.

Buttered toast with real butter and thick sliced bread. I am reminded of the toast we used to make over the fire with a roasting fork when I was a child, it was delicious. Sometimes we would have dripping on it - there was always dripping left over from the Sunday roast, pork was the best.

I used to visit my childhood friend before she died three years ago. We would talk about our childhood experiences, she was the eldest of six and she said if her Mum ran out of money towards the end of the week they would have to live on bread and milk. This was in Worcestershire.

I've now got an overwhelming desire to eat a big bowlful .
It's scrumptious.......off to the kitchen.

henetha. You’ve just reminded me about bread and milk, my grandad used to call them pogs he was from Yorkshire. My mum makes cheese and onion in milk and loves it.

My relations made bread, hot milk and sugar and mashed it up for babies they called it pobs. They were from Cumberland.
My own favourite when not well is white toasted bread with butter and raspberry jam or strawberry.

I think we should have a National Comfort Food day when we all eat our favourite. grin

I’m now wondering what else babies and very young children were given before there was baby food to buy, and nobody had electric blenders.
I seem to remember my mother sieving cooked spinach!

I dare say mashed potato and gravy was a thing, too.

One old method I used was to chew stuff first and then give the baby a taste of what it was. Other primates do this too. Many of you will have seen footage of primate babies reaching to their mothers' mouths for some food.

Bella23 pobs that’s probably it! He used to put salt and pepper on his, he also liked porridge with salt, he must have preferred savoury things where as I turn to sweet things for comfort. Rhubarb crumble and custard is my favourite.

DanniRae Sun 15-Oct-23 12:57:55

I am loving this thread ...... smile

I am just about to have 2 boiled eggs and bread and butter for my lunch ...... but I always put some raspberry jam on the second slice of bread!

Bella23 -
My dad grew up in Cumbria and, according to him, bread & milk with sugar was called "dolls' pobs" while bread & gravy with salt and pepper was "sloddy pobs".
I can't say I fancy either delicacy very much!
Melted cheese on thick toast for me, every time.

I think your right Witzend. Anything the adults were having was mashed up and fed to them. Crusts off bread were dried in the oven and given as rusks and their gums rubbed with brandy when they were teething. Dinifords is a name that comes into my head but I don't know what it was. Nurse Grants colic bottle as well.
No wonder so many never lived out of childhood.
My late FIL's party piece was telling how when he started school in the 1920's ,one woman went down to the school at break pushed her breast through the railings and shouted for Alfie to come and get his pap. She was still breastfeeding him when he was at school!!!!blush

I’m not keen on eggs, but if feeling under the weather, I love spinach Florentine, (eggs in a nest of spinach, covered in a cheese sauce then baked)!

foxie48 Sun 15-Oct-23 13:43:43

hot buttered white toast with a banana squished on it or failing that with marmite.

I’ve three. Cheese on toast, home made vegetable soup and what will probably sound very odd. Tinned tomato soup with baked beans in it. It was my parents go to for a hot, filling supper when we were on our summer holiday in an often chilly and damp rented caravan. It puts me straight back to childhood.

MrsKen33 Sun 15-Oct-23 16:34:43

I don’t do comfort food as I am a reversed diabetic. If I did it would be syrup sponge with custard and a pork pie
