A Desert Breakfast recipe for kids

Our 10 year old DGS asked us if he could make a Desert Breakfast he had seen on YouTube. We agreed but supervised him carefully.

Take two pieces of a sliced loaf
Place one on top of the other
Take a glass tumbler and press down in the middle of the bread
Remove the two circular pieces of bread and separate
Place one chunk of favourite chocolate between the two circular discs
Make sure the two discs of bread are firmly sealed together around the edge
Under strict supervision allow child to place Desert Breakfast in the toaster for about 30 seconds or until bread looks toasted
Place toasted chocolate disc on plate and allow to cool for a short while
Eat a delicious chocolate sandwich 🤪👍

Our DGS said that the remaining bread could but put in a frying pan with an egg cracked in the middle of each hole and flipped over half way through the cooking procedure.

Much fun and eating of hot chocolate sandwiches was experienced this last weekend with the DGDs and their friends.

Can you add any easy child friendly recipes ?

I have a mental image of a puddle of melted/burnt chocolate in the bottom of the toaster. What could possibly go wrong? grin
(What’s the connection with Deserts? )

Why is this a desert breakfast?

Aveline

Why is this a desert breakfast?

Because it’s a sandwich? (Boom, boom!) 🤣🤣

I think it is called a Desert breakfast as it can be assembled outside and cooked over a fire, or so my grandson says.

PS DGS said his Mum had told him he couldn’t ever find anything useful on YouTube and he thinks he has proved her wrong 😀

Aveline Tue 14-Nov-23 07:56:02

RosiesMaw- I did not wish to know that. Kindly leave the stage!!

NanKate Tue 14-Nov-23 07:58:08

Well said Rosies 👍

I misread the heading. I thought it was a dessert breakfast, which it could be, for it is sweet! 🤣

Very witty Maw.

I have a Crimpit, which was recommended by GNetters. I see they now also do one for wraps as well as the toastie. These can be used with the same results as your method. I gave some as Stocking fillers one Christmas.
Crimpit

Nothing like starting the day with a healthy breakfast😬.

I’m tempted to one of those - Gdcs are very partial to cheese on toast, or toasted cheese sandwiches. I used to have a toasted sandwich maker but it was frankly a bugger to clean - I eventually got rid of it.

Just googled Crimpits and have ordered a pack of two. They look very handy.

Elless Tue 14-Nov-23 09:35:03

Another Christmas present stocking filler 🤶- thank you!

I won’t mention to the Gdcs that it can make Nutella sandwiches too!
I do often make them Nutella pancakes (as long as they also have e.g. a banana one) but Nutella is lethal for me - once Gdcs are gone, all too often I end up eating what’s left with a spoon. 🐷

Thanks Shysal the crimpit looks great.

I’m sure we let the boys make too many desert breakfasts but they were having so much fun 🥳

DGS is coming to stay and I'm certainly not going to suggest this to him 😁

Although he probably knows it already and has a few more tricks up his sleeve!

Ditto!

I grew up at the seaside. The desert breakfast reminds me of when I was a Girl Guide. One summer's evening our Guide Captain took us to the sand dunes, where we toasted 'cheese dreams' over a camp fire. A desert supper. smile

Fantastic Black Friday Crimpit deal. I’ve just ordered Crimpit wrap and toasty makers for myself, DD’s and our small football club bar. Great presents. I went straight to theCrimpit website and found the offer. They are also made in Great Britain. Win win!

Buy one get one free I should have said.

Our have dessert breakfasts often. Not the precise chocolate sandwich mentioned - but many other foods. Arme Ritter comes to mind.

Mamasperspective Tue 14-Nov-23 11:36:24

Mashed banana and egg with some honey for sweetness makes good breakfast pancakes and quite healthy too (until you add some unhealthy toppings haha!)

For those of you who hate cleaning your sandwich maker, this is what I do with my mini George Foreman grill, which I use for toasties as well as steaks etc., and it has stayed as new:
When you have finished cooking, turn off and add several sheets of wet kitchen roll then close. When you have finished eating, open and use the paper to wipe over the surfaces, followed by a dry sheet if necessary. I see no reason for it not to work on any similar appliance. I think it steams clean as it cools.

Use butter, saute in a frying pan, wipe out when done?
