Cooking my bottoms!?

My new all singing, all dancing microwave has the heating element in the top. Consequently, when using the convection mode for, say pies, I end up with a burnt crust and a soggy bottom.
A very soggy bottom.
A nearly raw bottom.
Apart from covering the dishes with foil for half the cooking time I can't think of any other way to cope.
Any hints on how to get properly cooked bottoms?

You can't put foil or anything metallic in a microwave. I just found this on Google.... wrap the pie in a paper towel then heat for 3-4 minutes and leave in the microwave for it to cook from its own heat for another 3 minutes or so.

Moonwatcher1904. I don’t know about tin foil but my Siemens has this sign and I nearly always put a metal spoon when heating water.

Regarding tinfoil. It sounds like you have a combi oven ExDancer and are using it in convection mode, not as a microwave. Did it come with a user manual that may contain some hints and tips?

If I was cooking a pie in the main oven I’d cover the top to prevent it being overdone. Not sure if that would work with an overhead radiant heat source though.

I didn't think of it being a combi. I've only got a simple microwave. I have a cooker with a large oven and a grill which is also a smaller oven. I use this more than anything.

I did mention I was using the combi mode.

My new oven is a standard oven ond combi microwave - absolute waste of time!!! Only use the microwave oven for microwaving!!!

Using an actual combination should cook the middle and bottom and brown the top. That's the whole point of the combination cooker! Check the handbook for suggestions.

I used to have one, but now only have one with grill and microwave, but I still have the book from the old one. (My son took the oven to Berlin with him and still uses it. No point in him having a handbook!)

I have just checked that hand-/recipe book, but being German, it doesn't mention pies. Germans just don't do pie. The nearest I can find is apple strudel. The recommended cooking setting for this is 25-30 mins at 180° + microwave on a medium setting. The recipe uses 250g flour.

Oh, and for any pie, baking blind should always help prevent a soggy bottom. You can pop it in the oven while you're assembling the filling.

In your place I would contact the maker of your new Microwave and ask for instructions to deal with this or any other problem.
