Christmas lunch alone, what food would you choose?

I have chosen to have my Christmas dinner on my own, and will see family at some point. Thinking of my favourite food, which is cheese, I have decided on a baked Camembert with home-made baguette plus a Pavlova dessert. It will be so simple to prepare and I shall enjoy it!
If you were (or are) eating alone, what would be your choice?

I’d cook a Turkey crown and eat the rest of it over Christmas, and have all the trimmings, which would not include sprouts, but would probably have parsnips. I went off sprouts after I had Covid, and I haven’t been able to eat them since. I’d buy a ready made dessert from Waitrose or M & S. I’d eat in from of the TV, maybe with a glass of rosé, which is what we always had when I was a child.

Then a big old wallow on whatever I want to watch on TV, or maybe stream a film or TV series I haven’t seen yet.

Love how M&S is the food choice for the majority! I would do exactly the same. I will be with family on Christmas Day and then on my own for the rest of Christmas and new year, you’d think I’d get used to it but it’s hard sometimes especially when some friends complain about the hassle of having so much company over Christmas …. They have no idea rally.

I’m going to be on my own this year, as both AC are going to in-laws on Christmas Day. I’m fine with it, less stress! I don’t eat pastry normally, so I’m going to treat myself to an M&S Best Ever steak pie. Will have that with some creamy mash and green beans. Dessert will be a posh lemon tart with some Greek yogurt and a few blueberries. Nice claret to wash it down with.

I’ve spent about 4 Christmas’s on my own and always cooked a full roast, albeit some ready prepared eg roast potatoes, swede, Yorkshire's, always cooked enough for Boxing Day 🎄 Throughly enjoyed.

I'd buy a very small turkey crown because If I was alone I wouldn't want to miss out on Xmas dinner. I'd just cook it for myself and possibly invite someone to share it with me.

One of those pre prepared lobsters from M&S and a little salad with fresh orange and pea shoots and a glass of champagne. Trifle for afters!

I think I'd go with Shysal's menu - or maybe go a little more adventurous with a cheese fondue.

Sounds perfect. I'd choose the same if I were alone. Have to have lashings of butter on the baguette though. Heaven when dipped into the drippy camembert - yum.
Absolutely no good for my waistline but, hey, it's Christmas !

So why is the cake on the bottom layer called Swiss roll. Does the Black Forest border Switzerland?

No idea why Swiss roll is called such. And yes, parts of Northern Switzerland border Black Forest.

I make mine with chocolate sponge. Home made as GS VERY allergic to egg. And Bird's Custard with a bit of double cream and a tad of vanilla essence, for same reasons.

Oatcakes, grapes and blue cream cheese. Daughter in law's vegetarian cottage pie. Mugs of tea with milk. Maybe Tesco lemon curd yog.

A small portion of moules mariniere, followed by a Barnsley chop (cut across the saddle to give a double chop) with dauphinois potatoes and green beans, and an individual Christmas pudding to follow with lashings of brandy cream. A good Rioja to drink with the meat and a glass of Oban malt whiskey to follow the pudding.

yum...that sounds delicious... enjoy

For a cozy Christmas lunch alone, I would choose a simple yet comforting meal.
I might start with a warm bowl of butternut squash soup, garnished with a dollop of sour cream and some fresh herbs. check out recipe on www.lifestylefoodies.com/the-best-keto-butternut-squash-soup-for-you/
For the main course, I would opt for roasted chicken with garlic and rosemary, served alongside roasted vegetables like carrots, Brussels sprouts, and parsnips.
To finish off the meal on a sweet note, I would indulge in a slice of homemade apple pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Think I would eat out at a hotel, or have an M and S ready meal. Could be tempted by M and S hot chicken tikka masala.

Fleurpepper, I just looked up Black Forest trifle recipe, and it looks delicious. Can you share the recipe?

I make a log cake with chocolate biscuits and whip cream that is a family favourite, but trifle would make a nice change.

I just made it up from top of head many years ago.

Chocolate sponge, kirsch, black cherries with juice cooked down with a tad of cornflour, kirsch and sugar, custard, whipped cream and black cherries with shavings of good quality chocolate.

My friend used chocolate blancmange too or you could use cornflour and cocoa powder. It was just delicious.
Such a pity her efforts were wasted on DH although he never let her know.

Another ‘delivered the day before’ curry. Chicken dhansak, Saag Alo, couple of poppadoms and a Tiger beer thank you.

Lucyd Thu 23-Nov-23 21:13:43

GrandtanteJE65 - I am so sorry about your husband. Totally understand that you would rather be alone on Christmas Day.

Lucyd Thu 23-Nov-23 20:57:24

A couple of years ago I spent Christmas on my own. I was not looking forward to it as had lost my lovely Dad earlier in the year
, my dh a couple of years before and my friends who I could have spent Christmas with were both vulnerable and shielding from Covid. I was also waiting on the results of a covid test so felt very alone. In the end it was actually fine. I had avocado, prawns and smoked salmon for starters along with a nice bottle of fizz. Can't remember the rest if the meal but did have a big box of my favourite chocolates on the go too!
.

Such a great success with the family- never knew there is an 'official recipe'.

Oh a ‘delivered the day before’ Indian curry and paswari naan and a bottle of stones ginger wine or cream sherry or even a baileys if I could afford one

Is this it?

A dear friend made a Black Forest trifle for the dessert when we went there for dinner. Proper cherries with Kirsch etc. She knew DH loves trifle.
What she didn't know was that he dislikes chocolate puddings, cake, anything except just chocolate! He smiled and ate a bowlful.
I had his second helping.
