What is for brunch or lunch ?

28 / 11. Tuesday.

Sometimes, my husband and I enjoy having brunch during the week at home instead of a typical Menu del Día as we live in The Madrid Capital.
Eggs Benedict is quite versatile and can be prepared with either Smoked Salmon or Bacon or Ham. Eggs Florentine is quite a healthy alternative and French toast is always quite endearing.

Friday - The 12th of July 2024 ..

Our lunch starter today is Prosciutto, the delicate cured ham from the hills of Parma, Emilia Romagna served with fresh seasonal Melon ..

The main: A classic Frittata (omelette) prepared with fennel bulb, red bell pepper, leek, sweet Galician onion, baby spinach leaves, eggs, extra virgin olive oil from Italy, fresh herbs including parsley, thyme and oregano, salt and freshly ground black pepper corns.

Don't mention the custard tarts
Yum!

Lidl are also fantastic for little Portuguese custard tarts…….mmm!
I used to buy vine leaves in flat tins in my catering days, stuffed with spicy mince and rice (Dolmades) and served with a fresh tomato sauce, they were a popular starter.

Oh yes!

We can get them in Lidl, especially during Greek Week.

Jaxijackey,

The owner Niko told us, that the leaves were imported in jars in extra virgin olive oil .. Niko stuffed them at the Restaurant.

The dish was sublime.

They tend to be called grape leaves in Spain I believe, not sure why.

Jaxijackey,

This is the oldest Greek Restaurant in The Madrid Centre.

They were delicious ..

From the link:

I asked Fran to bring me all the pruned leaves, before spraying. “What for?” he asked. To make stuffed grape leaves, I told him. Here in southern Spain, this is unheard of. But I’ve been using vine leaves from the arbor ever since I first found a recipe for them in A Book of Middle Eastern Food by Claudia Roden (I have a 1972 Penguin edition).

Our vine was pruned today but I think the prunings went into the recycling bin

Do you mean Vine Leaves?

I think that whatever you call it - cilantro, coriander- it's the work of the devil. It tastes like soap to me.

We grow cilantro/coriander in our herb garden for proper Mexican food. Nigella's Coriander and Jalapeno Salsa is magnificent!

Many people think it tastes of soap.

I've never actually tried soap.

No, never!
She either never heard me or she might have said Calli*stem*on with a Paddington Bear stare.

I bought a fresh Cromer crab this morning and some nice soft bread rolls so we had crab rolls for lunch.

Your mum didn't put soap in your mouth if you said a bad word?

Lucky you!

Our Greek Lunch on Thursday the 11th of July ..

We started with an appetiser (mezedes) of Prawns with Dill scented rice in Grape Leaves with Tzatziki which were heavenly divine.

Then, I had the Taramosalata prepared with grey mullet and my dear had a Greek Salad plentiful of Feta Cheese ..

My husband enjoyed tremendously, Phyllo dough baked and filled with spinach & feta.

Of course a lovely Rosé light Cretan wine and for dessert we shared a Baklava with our Greek Coffees.

Lovely lunch.

I cooked a ham and mushroom white pizza from the co-op. They are £5.95 (!!) but very nice. I had a couple off slices and one of my sons and daughter eat the rest

Callistemon213 Thu 11-Jul-24 12:40:42

Dinahmo you need to keep your strength up!

I rarely lose my appetite but did recently, however, it didn't result in much weight loss ☹

RosiesMaw2 Thu 11-Jul-24 12:39:54

Coriander is coriander but cilantro in America I believe.

If Mary, Delia, Jamie, Rick, Felicity et al call it coriander then that's good enough for me
🤩🤩🤩

A Coronation Chicken sandwich from M&S plus a custard tart - bought on our way home from the vet where Rosie was a brave girl while she had her claws clipped.
She’s pretty good but Gracie used to scream to the point where I had to go and sit in the car in the car park with the radio on.
If you’ve ever heard GSOD (greyhound scream or howl of death) you will know what I mean!

Thursday - 11th July 2024 ..

We are going out for Traditional Greek Lunch today ..

Classic Tarmosalata and a Greek Salad which we truly enjoy.

Nice Thursday wishes.

Callistemon I grow it, but it goes to seed very quickly.
Beef and veg casserole tonight, mash with cabbage.

My DH is in hospital at the moment having got either strep or staph in the knee where he had an implant last year. Luckily the implant doesn't have to be changed. They cut his knee open and washed the infection last Friday. Good news today that he's coming home next Monday.

Since he's been away I've been eating banana with yoghurt, an apple with some hard cheese and salad from a bag with slice terrine from the supermarket, or grated cheese or tinned tuna. I'm not hungry and can't be bothered to cook. I haven't made tea or coffee since the weekend and am just drinking water.

Yesterday I had lunch with friends whose son is a chef and he made baked eggs with truffle grated in, followed by some salads. His mum made tarte tatin. All delicious.

kittylester Thu 11-Jul-24 10:55:05

I buy a pack of smoked salmon bits (they are called something posher than that) which are usually very cheap.

*Calli*, I usually make kedgeree with smoked salmon - it's delicious. And considerably easier that last night's recipe.

GF breadcrumbed chicken breast with oven chips and coleslaw tonight.

I might try that, kittylester

I prefer parsley 😃
DD can't bear parsley, even when it's freshly picked and chopped, she says it tastes stale.

Sausage and mash tonight. Exotic.
