The jar I bought a couple of weeks refuses to yield up it's contents - for the life of me I must have tried everything! Warming up the jar, cooling it in the fridge for a couple of hours. A male neighbour tried and gave up, saying "God in heaven - it must be superglued on!"
Indeed. Why do manufacturers do this?

*Mae13*, I see that you have solved your problem, but I have both of these in the kitchen drawer, and they are excellent at opening jars and other tough to open tops, i.e. bleach bottles.

Me too.. Invaluable if you have arthritic hands

I ordered a Jarkey from Amazon when this topic came up before. It really works. Every home should have one.

I always use one of these. It breaks the vacuum and makes it easy to open the jar.

M0nica

I do the same as WWM2, I take a sharp knife with a pointed end and ram it through the lid to break the seal.

Me too.
I've rammed it into my fingers at times, too.
Oh boy, that hurts!!

Mae13, yes both available from Amazon

Yes, Jarkey for me too. I got mine from Lakeland.

I tried the trick with hot water and rubber gloves and it worked! I have a jar of mincemeat dated 2016 which is now open. It tastes ok so I hope it's safe to use.

MissAdventure Sun 03-Mar-24 16:50:51

Have you been struggling to open it since 2016? smile

I have a jarkey brilliant bit of tool
Before that I used to just put end of teaspoon or knife under the edge to pop seal

Babamaman Tue 05-Mar-24 11:38:26

Bash the lid Tim with a wooden rolling pin!
Good luck
Or take it back to the store and get a member of staff to open it! 🤣👍

Foxyferret Tue 05-Mar-24 11:58:06

Yes tanith, I agree. Give it a good smack around the lid with the side of a wooden spoon, usually works for me.

I’ve tried just about every jar opening gadget over the years but now use a Kuhn Rikon one. It will open jars, bottles, nail varnish bottles and will easily peel back ring pulls. It will grip the jar etc lid without puncturing the metal.
I can also recommend the Kuhn Rikon tin opener. It de-bonds the lid and leaves all edges smooth and not sharp, also never comes in contact with the food so no problem cleaning it.
Both available from Amazon.

Just go under the lid rim with a blunt knife and poll very slightly to release the pressure. Cry easy and no effort required at all. Some tin openers have a little hook on the handle, just for that.

Libcat Tue 05-Mar-24 12:22:59

I have this gadget from Lakeland www.lakeland.co.uk/7706/jarkey-screw-top-jar-opener
It works very well

Rainnsnow Tue 05-Mar-24 13:32:22

I use the end of a teaspoon. Is the chutney nice after all your effort breaking into the jar ?

MaggsMcG Tue 05-Mar-24 13:58:03

I was told to try tightening it before opening. I always have more success with the flat bladed screwdriver gently breaking the seal. Don't use too much force or you could break the glass rim.

NannaFirework Tue 05-Mar-24 13:59:18

Glad you opened it successfully / I
Tap the top of the jars I can’t open, sideways (carefully) on the kitchen floor - always works…

Ktsmum Tue 05-Mar-24 14:17:08

My DH drills small holes in the lids to release the vaccuim, never fails

ordinarygirl Tue 05-Mar-24 14:45:49

take it back to the store and ask for a replacement!

Granra2 Tue 05-Mar-24 15:21:45

I’ve tried grippy things to no avail. It’s hard to get them to grip tightly enough.

Picklesgranma Tue 05-Mar-24 16:13:08

I ease the lid up with a beer bottle opener till the seal is broken, works a treat.

scorpysue Tue 05-Mar-24 16:22:14

I have had this issue many times over the years. I've tried a silicone jar gripper opener thingy (sometimes worked) placing jar lid sideways between door & door frame (not recommended as can be messy) and have asked others who might have a stronger or better grip on occasion (not always someone else around when needed!) However, I successfully opened the last stubborn jar by using the bottle opener end of an old school tin opener (pictured). Just a small bit of downward pressure on the lid lets some air out/ loosens the seal and you can still close the lid properly after. Works everytime! 👍

Hellsbelles Tue 05-Mar-24 16:32:44

I would take it back.

BlueSapphire Tue 05-Mar-24 17:25:05

I have a Jarkey too, works every time.

CanadianGran Tue 05-Mar-24 18:43:08

I give jars a good band upside down on a wooden bread board. Not on an angle; straight down. It seems to break the seal. Then I have a rubber gripper for twisting the lid.
