Curious, where would I find the Orange and plum cake recipe? I still have some plums frozen from last summer.

Courgette cake is lovely, very moist. Add orange or lemon icing. Not at all too sweet

If they don’t want anything too sweet, I’d just make a Victoria sandwich, with blackcurrant jam (a very slightly tart contrast to the sweetness of the cake) and just a sprinkle of icing sugar on top. You could pretty it up with some ready made decorations - there are plenty available in supermarkets - and edible or not, they are easily removed.

I should add I use less sugar than the recipe states and have substituted the plum for rhubarb.

I like all of Whiffs suggestions especially the Victoria chocolate cake.

Whiff Sat 20-Apr-24 17:00:35

My recipes CAN be gluten free not contain can 🤦

If I want to bake a cake , which isn't overwhelmingly sweet after icing - I tend to make a Victoria sponge and fill the inside with lots of fresh fruit .
It's always popular and friends won't say no to ice cream or cream with it , which rather defeats the object of not being too sweet !

Madeira. I flavour mine with orange and lemon, and it always seems popular.

It has the added advantage of being easy to trim to shapes, and to decorate, but that may not be relevant for you this time.

Chocolate beetroot cake. In fact, most cakes made with vegetables www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/collection/garden-glut-cake-recipes

I don’t think they have sweetcorn cake on there, but sweetcorn works well with raspberries. I haven’t tried this recipe (I tend to make sweetcorn and raspberry scones) so can’t vouch for it www.food.com/recipe/fresh-corn-cake-with-raspberries-307797

Oh whiff just perfect thank you. I’ll see how I can get on now.

My brownie, gingerbread ,Parkin ,black forest and lemon marmalade drizzle cake isn't sweet either , I also put lemon drizzle recipe as well but find my hybrid recipe better. My apple / blueberry cake isn't sweet but not a traditional birthday cake .

But not traditional birthday cakes can be decorated with dried fruits not the usual sort , dark chocolates on Victoria chocolate cake filled with chocolate fudge icing . I don't like sweet cakes so I don't make them.

dogsmother just bumped 2 threads up they both have cake recipes that aren't to sweet. Whiff's recipes came about as a joke requested by others. Both threads have cake recipes and some pictures . Hope you can find something there . All my recipes contain can be gluten free if needed but you need gluten free SR flour as well as gluten free baking powder and you need to make sure the mixture is moist as the gluten free flour absorbs more liquid than ordinary flour

Victoria Sponge with a little jam and a little icing.

dogsmother Sat 20-Apr-24 13:28:52

It’s for an adult and I’m baking not buying.

Witzend Sat 20-Apr-24 13:21:35

I’d take that to mean, no mountains of sickly icing!
How about a Victoria sandwich, with a lemon drizzle type topping and something lemony in the middle - lemon curd?

If you want decorations I’d look in supermarkets - there are lots of ready made ones.

Whiff Sat 20-Apr-24 13:21:17

dogsmother is it for a child or adult and do you want to decorate it?

dogsmother Sat 20-Apr-24 13:14:19

Anyone offer advice please. I have to bake a birthday cake nothing specific only request is that it’s a non to sweet type!
