Has anyone made them? I ordered some crumpet rings from Lakeland which turned up today.

There is a recipe on the back of the packet that uses all strong bread flour whereas the one I copied from the BBC uses half strong bread flour and half plain flour. Does it make any difference?

Thanks for your help.smile

Try one recipe , and have a go at the other , taste and see , I think plain flour might lighten the result , it depends on what you like

I've never made them .
I'd love to know the result .

I haven't made crumpets but I have made pikelets - much the same but thinner and without the ring. I used bread flour.

Thank you all, I will have a go in the morning, we love crumpets and it is something I have always thought about doing but never have until now. smile

You need the strong flour to stabilise the holes so they stay open . I have made crumpets but it's a lot of faff. Aldi sourdough crumpets are the best I have tasted.

I've made them. I used all strong bread flour for mine. They worked really well. I was impressed with my efforts.

Nothing better than Warburtons crumpets.

I used to make them, also using strong bread flour with good results, but to be honest my husband does the best breads and bagels etc. so I tend to leave such things to him now. I still make flatbreads though as they’re so quick and easy and we always have the (just 3) ingredients in.

Like Hot Cross Buns, really not worth the trouble to make at home.

This recipe posted from a British foods group on FB. People make the foods and post recipes/pic. Warburton crumpet recipe.
Not tried it myself but others have.

Crumpet
Ingredients (makes 6)

150g plain white flour
200ml water
½ tsp salt
½ tsp sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp dried yeast
Method

Stage 1 – How to make the Crumpet Batter…

Add Flour, Water and Salt to a mixing bowl
Mix vigorously with a whisk until your arm aches (at least 5 minutes) to create your crumpet batter
Mix a few ml’s of water into to your dried yeast
Add sugar, baking powder and yeast mixture to bowl and mix for another 30 seconds until you have a clear batter (and your arm aches even more!)
Cover mixing bowl and put into a warm place for 15 mins (Top tip – make sure your mixing bowl is bigger than you need as it will expand)
Stage 2 – How to bake your crumpets…

Place a greased metal biscuit cutter (any shape cutter you have to hand will also do the trick) into the middle of a non-stick frying pan
Pre-heat your frying pan on a hob on a medium-high heat setting
Before you start, give your batter a stir to remove any large air bubbles
Use a ladle to drop approx. 60g batter into the cutter inside the pan
Wait for approx. 4 mins – carefully lift the ring off the crumpet
Remove baked Crumpet from pan (if the top looks a bit gooey flip over in the pan for a few seconds)
Cool
Repeat the above to make as many as you can eat!
Toast and enjoy with butter, or anything else you fancy
