Remember when you bought a loaf of Mothers Pride , buttered (or marged) it and made ham or cheese or fish paste or (posh this) egg mayonnaise sandwiches?
Now a single sandwich costs more than the MP, butter and the fillings.
But some are really worth it.
Favourites?
Bacon, Brie and cranberries or Coronation Chicken for me.
Humble cheese and pickle too as long as the cheese is sliced not grated which always tastes of sick to me.

It was my dad who made our sugar sandwiches.

My Grandma made us sugar sandwiches; I can't remember her but I do remember the sandwiches.

My mum used to make us sugar sandwiches. Mum thought they were terribly common.

Ewww, that takes me right back to Primary 1 when a boy in my class always used to have sugar sandwiches as his 'play piece' - the sound of him crunching into them used to turn my stomach, and still does!

I can't see how you can be right bellasnana as Pane di Altamura is the best bread in the world! 😂

I said ‘amongst the best’!😂😂

Got me thinking of my childhood. Mum used to make my sister and me black treacle butties. They were delicious.
Maybe we were just very hungry kids … 😁

It's cruel talking about bread when the are people who are gluten intolerant (or worse!) reading a thread. envy

merlotgran, Maltese bread has got to be amongst the best bread in the world! You are referring to ‘Hobz biz-zejt’ (bread with oil). The bread is rubbed with fresh tomato or tomato paste (not ketchup) and drizzled with olive oil, salt and pepper. It is delicious isn’t it!😊

My favourite sandwich is brown bread, butter and a thinly sliced tomato with plenty of salt and pepper. Simple but delicious.

Bellasnana My father was posted to Malta in the early fifties and I remember the local children all ate tomato ketchup sandwiches with sliced white bread. They were delicious and even more so if the bread was buttered.

A few years later we had a stop over on the way back from Aden and I noticed the sandwiches had been upgraded by the addition of chips!

Even more tasty.

I also found it difficult to be adventurous in my choice of sandwich filling but love trying different things.

Frenchgal I'm sure that most of us are aware of, or have even eaten, Croque Monsieur.

Yes, but maybe adding the recipe makes a difference! Merlotgran’s egg makes it a Croque Madame. This one had to be a Monsieur because they forgot the egg!

When we lived in Tasmania in the 1980s we used to get crayfish sandwiches with mayo. Never had any before or since but they were to die for. Now they would cost a fortune but then they were only a couple of dollars. Now I am living in Victoria I love an egg, lettuce and mayo sandwich on grain bread.

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 12-Jul-24 08:57:28

Please, no peanut butter 🥴

I like bread without crusts and my carer makes me scrambled eggs to put on sandwiches for me, sometimes I buy plain bread with crusts at both ends it’s great for toasting I’ll buy the odd sandwich from sainsburys or Boots made up in a meal deal, cheese and ham with pickle, plain crisps and a can of coke yum yum yummy

TillyTrotter Fri 12-Jul-24 06:54:27

It has to be fish
- fish finger on white bread (not a ‘posh bun’),
and tuna +mayo on brown bread.
But as a child, my mum’s homemade Plum jam sarnie all day long.

Agree about the fresh crab sandwiches. We had delicious ones in Sidmouth last week.

Redhead56 Thu 11-Jul-24 22:17:24

I do agree with the chip butty with loads of butter and ketchup.

Redhead56 Thu 11-Jul-24 22:10:16

Bacon with ketchup or an egg red onion salad with salad cream. Tinned salmon or tuna with a bit of onion and salad cream corned beef onion and piccalilli all home made. I don't buy sandwiches I can't stand the thought of them.

Stop it pammie!

🤣🤣🤣

NotSpaghetti Thu 11-Jul-24 21:33:08

Pammie1 you are right.
Cheese and tomato don't belong together - and neither does egg and tomato!
😂

Anniebach Thu 11-Jul-24 21:29:23

Anything with marmite

Marmite, peanut butter and lots of watercress or rocket. 😍

NotSpaghetti Thu 11-Jul-24 21:20:35

I'm with Maddyone - cheese and beetroot... yum.

NotSpaghetti Thu 11-Jul-24 21:18:45

I don't honestly think I've ever had Mother's Pride, RosiesMaw, certainly not knowingly.

My family never bought sliced bread and I only ever bought sliced wholemeal bread when on "cricket tea" duty.

I don't remember ever buying sliced white at all - although I do remember eating sliced white in the university canteen now I think about it.
