What was the last jam you made?

I made nectarine jam recently and having never had it didn't know what to expect. Well, to say my family loves it is an understatement! It's like summer in a jar!

We enjoyed it on Sunday with a cream tea to celebrate England getting to the Euros final.

What was the last jam you made and how was it?

I made ‘Christmas jam’ as a gift for my grandson’s 7th birthday last week. It’s basically red berry jam with added orange juice, cinnamon and a little bit of mixed spice. My grandson loves it and FaceTimes me to let me know when he’s running out of it.

I make jam for all the family as we have an allotment and grow raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, loganberries, plums and figs - the latter makes the most delicious jam when paired with the zest and juice of lemons. Everyone in the family has a favourite jam.

Today I started on a batch of redcurrant wine and the blackcurrants have been picked and are now steeping in vodka and sugar. Both should be ready for Christmas, but I have last years still to be drunk first.

Oh dear, when you need Autocorrect it's not there!

Cornish way - jam first, cream on top. Plain scones, not fruited.

No worries, I think this software was developed many moons ago and hasn't moved on. Very clunky!

Never made it but SIL in Turkey makes it. She isn’t Turkish.

The nectarine jam looks delicious.

I made it once and it was lovely 🙂

That looks so yummy! Looks like you eat your scones the Devon way. My neighbour is from Devon and insists this is the right way but I have Cornish family so eat with the cream first and jam second.

It's actually the Cornish way with the cream on top. I was making Rodda's clotted cream scone recipe from a tea towel they once gave me and it even says on there to serve it this way. I usually serve the other way round to show off the jam but did this quickly for my daughter who was off to watch the Euros:-)

Yes, that's the Cirnidh way.
We prefer it that way even though DH is a Devon boy.

Blackberry jam with last year's blackberries from the freezer.
Normally I'd make bramble jelly but didn't have the time (or patience).

We have no plums at all on our tree this year, so no plum jam.

I haven't made for a couple of years, but if I'm lucky to be given Plumbs, Mulled Wine Jam, ready for Christmas.
Found the recipe in a WI cook book, made a few times it's fabulous.

Tuaim if you want idiot proof recipes for jams, marmalade and chutneys I have some . I had to make them idiot proof for me because I can't do them the way I did 20 years ago.

I have had to make all recipes idiot proof for me. But they do work.

I would like to be able to make jam to enter into our parish jam making competition but my jam is either too runny or too stiff. Alas! Alack!

I always either freeze the fruit from raw or use frozen fruit. That way just put it into my persevering pan over night to defrost never add extra water as I blitz with sticky blender and add sugar and lemon juice . Adding water dilutes the flavour of the jam .

Always use cider vinegar for chutney's gives great flavour ..

Never use tinned preserves for jam or marmalade. I use real fruit. Like I always bake from scratch.

This morning 8lbs of berry and orange jam..

Made tom chutney last week week before mango chutney.

I also make Seville orange marmalade and lemon marmalade.
Strawberry jam next week.
Baking tomorrow for my craft group.
Gingerbread rocks and Seville marmalade rocks .

Because of disability my hands tremble all the time so have to bake my way. Which everyone loves.

Gooseberry, made from our own crop of very small sweet gooseberries - delicious!

silverlining48 Tue 16-Jul-24 16:13:41

Embarrassed to say I have never made jam or marmalade either come to that. Hardly eat jam but in latter years have come to like Marmelade.

teabagwoman Tue 16-Jul-24 16:09:48

Does making orange and pineapple marmalade using a can of prepared oranges count?

Esmay Tue 16-Jul-24 16:05:53

Rhubarb and I poured in far too much water which took ages to reduce .
I'm more likely to make a chutney than a jam .

Pantglas2 Tue 16-Jul-24 15:59:23

Raspberry- the first I ever made 40 years ago and the last a month ago.

It’s the easiest to make by a mile (for those who’ve never tried) as there’s no trimming, hulling, topping &tailing or chopping.

Simply weigh, add an equal amount of sugar, a splash of water, boil, set, pot and label… then proceed to give it all away as Mr PGs just commented! 🤦‍♀️ (that solves the waistline issue MaizieD!)

growstuff Tue 16-Jul-24 15:58:05

Not proper jam, but blackcurrant compote. It keeps in the fridge for a couple of weeks and I freeze lots in small portions. I love it on Greek yoghurt (my OH has it on porridge) and a sprinkling of chopped mixed nuts.

Camilla7 I love the idea of Nectarine jam I’m going to give it a go.

Awesome, this is the recipe: www.fabfood4all.co.uk/easy-nectarine-jam-recipe-no-peeling-or-pectin/

Greyduster Tue 16-Jul-24 15:50:32

Blackberry some years ago. I cooked it for too long and when it cooled in the jars it was impossible to spoon out! We gave up and I threw the lot away. It looks like it's going to be a bumper year for blackberries so I might try again.

MaizieD Tue 16-Jul-24 15:15:41

I regularly make cheatie marmalade with the Mamade pulp for DH, who likes the stuff (I don't). Am about to make a new batch today or tomorrow.

I like jam making but don't like the effect jam has on my waistline, so I don't do it very often....😆

Frenchgalinspain Tue 16-Jul-24 15:02:52

During the Christmas Season, my husband and I, prepare orange mermelade ..

It is downed by our twin daughters, our son in laws, friends and the three grand children quite quickly ..
