To butter or not to butter

What happens if the Brie of Camembert isn't runny?

On the subject of butter does anyone have a reference between salty and not salty? I prefer salty which goes particularly well with apricot jam on toast.

And as for people who put butter on their croissants..... have they actually ever actually looked at the recipe?

I don't need the bread! When I buy brie/(the other one) I don't wait for them to soften! I munch as they are.

For me, if I want cheese, I'll eat cheese. That and the fact French bread, have NEVER bought it since seeing someone sneeze over the packets as the ends always stick out! Those and the 'help yourself bakery' items. Kids grubby hands..... and coughers and sneezers!

This was before Covid too!

Not only do I have to eat gluten free bread (ugh) but am not able to eat dairy either. How I miss ‘proper’ bread, cheese and butter.

On here, a casual chat about something one does can lead to a storm of responses, expressing how wrong you've been getting things, and that people's mothers never did that...

I lived in Brittany for some of my childhood. Butter was always on the table with everything, always with bread.
But why would you spread Brie and Camembert? I know they're soft, but squashing the daylights out of them isn't really done. You can buy crème de brie in a tub if you want to do that.

It could well be 😂

The only U/non-U I’m aware of re bread and butter, is that you’re supposed (supposedly!) to break pieces off a bread roll before eating it (buttered or not) rather than either cutting it or biting bits off it.

That's why I put butter on scones with my cream tea, to make the clotted cream adhere to it.

I got used to eating cheese in Françe with a few well dressed salad leaves, no bread or butter, each to their own.

I am a glutton for butter, and will gladly eat it with any sort of bread and cheese, but during my year in France, and subsequent visits, I was never once offered butter with the cheese course.
I don’t spread the Brie, just cut a small chunk and perch on the bread. I’m wishing there was some in the fridge now, to go with the unopened bottle of wine.
What other French cheeses do you like?

Norah I like Brötchen, lovely fir breakfast, not seen them here, but never heard of stangenbrot.

How much more exciting things sound in another language!
Nothing exotic about Brötchen or Stangenbrot - they are just bread rolls and what we often call a French stick respectively.

No exotic at all, just what mum taught us to make. Simple preference.
