What is eating my avocado?

Just that. Came down this morning to find a biggish hole drilled in my avocado and a little pile of debris. No mouse droppings.

The ones we buy are are sometimes not ripe and do need to be kept in the fruit bowl, not the fridge where they won't ripen.
Once ripe, store in the fridge.

Greciangirl

Throw it out and keep any avocados in the fridge.
Much nicer cold too.

Not if they are ripen at home. I eat one every day as I use them instead of butter on my sandwich, just love them, but have never had a problem. I keep them in my cupboard until they are just ripe then the fridge.

Could it be slugs I sometimes come down in the morning to a slug on my kitchen floor
I don’t know how they get in.
I don’t even know if they can climb up onto a counter as I’ve never had anything eaten into. Just throwing an option out there. 🐌🐌🐌

(I mean your avocado being chewed is annoying, not someone’s house burning down thanks to a squirrel).

PamQS Wed 09-Oct-24 12:27:02

How annoying! Nigella Lawson uses loads of avocados, and I’ve never seen one like that in her kitchen!

Just a warning if you suspect squirrels rats or mice get pest control in ASAP. My next door neighbour hand reared a squirrel and kept it as a pet when I was very young. Will never forget the sight of her in pouring rain with only a dress on and one shoe watching her home go up in flames. The squirrel started the fire chewing through electric wires. My gran brought her an umbrella coat and shoes while she waited for the fire brigade.

More likely a rat because they tend to hide their droppings. My Mum kept losing her bathroom soap. One day she was lying in the bath and a rat popped up behind the bidet. When she looked she could see a hole and loads of soap!

Thanks everyone for suggestions. We pulled the cooker out and checked behind it. Emptied the cupboards and checked for holes/droppings. Nothing. Left the avocado out overnight with lots of traps around. Undisturbed this morning. Hoping Allira is right and whatever ate it is suffering acute indigestion, won’t be back and has also told all its friends to stay away.

I'd say a mouse too merlotgran but the OP said no droppings.

merlotgran Tue 08-Oct-24 11:52:51

My money is on a mouse. Look for droppings near an entry point like under the sink.

NotSpaghetti Tue 08-Oct-24 11:52:33

It can't be him as he eats half at a time... and for lunch...

merlotgran Tue 08-Oct-24 11:51:15

I saw what you did there - even if nobody else did!

I did but I’m late to the party! 🥳😂

I would buy a camera to film what goes on in your kitchen during the night.

nanna8 Tue 08-Oct-24 10:54:50

Rats would be my first thought. They are clever little devils. They like to eat lemons on the tree but leave half of them uneaten. Otherwise some sort of wasp?

Grannynannywanny Tue 08-Oct-24 10:51:09

Many years ago a friend came downstairs one morning to find an apple had been nibbled on the fruit bowl. She thought it was one of the children although it was denied. Next morning another partly eaten piece of fruit. Before the day was over she saw a large rat scurrying round the kitchen.

She’d recently had a new kitchen fitted and the kitchen fitters left a small gap around the pipe under the sink .

It has teeth marks. I don't think it's something getting out.

Squirrels and rats are still the most likely I think if no mice droppings.
Have a look behind your kitchen kickboards maybe?
I don't know how often squirrels defecate but do know my mother-in-law had a squirrel problem years ago.
They ate some of her Christmas cake.

I take it you don't have a pet bird?

Doodle Tue 08-Oct-24 10:20:54

Not me. I don’t like avocados.

Oopsadaisy1 Tue 08-Oct-24 10:19:43

Hidey holes!

Oopsadaisy1 Tue 08-Oct-24 10:19:21

Please let us know if anything pops out when you open it.

However, if something came out of it, I would check your kitchen for hides holes and something lurking..

Septimia

It wasn't eating its way out, was it?

Good thought!

A weevil?
