Hallowe'en Food

Some of us may be helping grandchildren carve pumpkins for Hallowe'en, but even if not, pumpkins are cheap and plentiful in the shops at this time of year.

Most pumpkins are not eaten but there are many recipes for pumpkin soup, roast pumpkin, pumpkin pie etc.
I think it's more traditional to eat pumpkins in other countries than in the UK but why throw most of the pumpkin away when we can make a meal of them?

So waste not want not!

That look good!

It is. Lovely on pretty crockery.

It didn't crack!

The Swiss roll, I mean, not the plate.

I think they are at their most expensive at this time because of Halloween

Allira before COVID we used to have a Halloween competition in our office, the different teams chose a theme and we all dressed up. We did Apple bobbing and other silly games, everyone took part it brought the whole department together for some fun and laughter, which when dealing all year with customers complaints was well needed.

Our neighbour has a horse farm and after Halloween we all leave our carved pumpkins in his field, the horses love them.

Keepitquiet. I too was told pumpkins for Halloween are not really suitable for eating. This was by a farmer growing pumpkins when he opened up for pumpkin picking and activities.

Well, mine always makes a very nice soup the day after - I do add a lot of flavouring, though. Any pumpkin is IMO extremely bland and needs livening up.

I’ve made a delicious pumpkin soup using a large supermarket pumpkin. I’d used it for display purposes at work, then brought it home. After cutting it into wedges and discarding the seeds I roasted the wedges in the oven and then used the flesh with onion, herbs, seasoning and garlic to make soup. Tasty it was, too.

I know pumpkin seeds can be eaten too, I just didn’t need them for that recipe and hadn’t looked up how to prepare them for future use. If I were to buy a pumpkin again, I would research how to deal with the seeds rather than waste them.
As for the big yellow pumpkins not being nutritious, a quick google search shows otherwise.

I think you roast them.

Photo was with the recipe. Mine typically isn't quite as smooth.

Serves beautifully, regardless.

That's very honest of you though I was quite prepared to believe it was yours, Ihave the impression from previous posts that you are a very good cook

Glad I wasn't making it up then! I'm sure lots of people cook the pumpkins and that's fine but just don't be under any illusion that they are grown for eating.

Thank you. I am a very good cook, follow recipes well. However, rolls do get tricky and are not always smooth on the top.

I pat ground pecans over the top, when warm, if it cracked. Magic.
