Can anyone tell me why ordinary brown onions are so expensive?
This morning, in Tesco, just 2 large brown onions were £1.40!

If you buy loose, smaller ones, they are now 21p each. I know you can buy a bag, but they are usually small and fiddly to peel.
I just wondered about the price. Supply and demand I suppose.

I paid .99 p for a kilo of British ones…so much for Brexit!

Astitchintime Thu 31-Oct-24 16:46:23

I don't understand what Brexit has to do with a vegetable that we can grow so easily in the UK. I always thought that brown onions were English onions but I do know that the shop bought varieties have probably been in storage for months, same as lots of home produce, hence the poor quality and short shelf life.

Hey, check out this product www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/263352376/?icid=ghsandapp_ghs_pdp_sharey

I buy frozen chopped onions. No waste and no painful streaming eyes! 😭

😁

I never knew Suffolk and Norfolk, where most onions are grown, were on the Continent.

Incidentally, why don't we grow more garlic here? If we grow onions so successfully, why not garlic. It comes from Spain or China!

Tesco - 1kg of brown onions is 99p
Waitrose 1kg is £1.05p

Well, as they're only planted twice a year and harvested twice a year, they do have to be stored for a year-round supply.

In this area, East Surrey, there is quite a shortage of frozen veg in the major supermarkets. Not sure what is going on.

Well, it will only get worse now.

Thanks V3ra, will check out some frozen onions next time I am shopping.

Yes, Allure, I was aware that they don't grow all year round.

Lots of garlic is grown on the Isle of Wight - that and strawberries.

Frozen for me... Can't be bothered with chopping and peeling onions with watering eyes.

The reason that vegetables, not just onions, are expensive is because of global waming.

Read this article, it explains what has been happening www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/jul/03/disastrous-fruit-and-vegetable-crops-must-be-wake-up-call-for-uk-say-farmers

They grow strawberries just up the road from me but I must find out if they grow garlic too.

Well, there's plenty of wild garlic.

This garlic farm is in/near Newchurch. www.thegarlicfarm.co.uk/ They have a shop, restaurant etc. They sell garlic oil, garlic chutney, garlic beer and garlic icecream and so on too - I don't think I fancy the beer or icecream. My daughter and son-in-law brought me back a bottle of the oil, it was very useful for browning meat and flavouring it at the same time.

Their garlic mustard is the business Elegran 👍

Which proves it grows well in this country, so why do we need to import it from China?

Although it doesn't grow well in my garden, I've tried several times.

loopyloo Fri 01-Nov-24 10:47:45

Have just pulled up 2 spring onions from a pot in the garden.
