Getting really fed up buying porridge that is so so sweet so I was looking for an alternative and these popped up 😲😲

I buy the Quaker porridge oats sachets for DH, plain flavour the ingredients listed are Wholegrain rolled oats, I wonder if when Shinamae is looking at nutrition info on the box she is seeing the made up value which includes the milk , don't forget milk contains naturally occurring sugars.

Just a suggestion for another time, as I see you’ve ordered some sugar free sachets, Shinamae (I hadn’t realised from your first post that you wanted them for work), but could you measure out enough oats the night before into a microwaveable container (you can get some that look like mugs) and then add your milk/water once you’re ready to eat them and pop them in the microwave at work for a few minutes on high? It might work out less expensive than buying the sachets.

That's what I was wondering about too.

I don't eat porridge very often because it spikes my blood glucose, but when I do, I put 40g of plain oats with milk and cinnamon in the microwave.

Shiname Presumably you have access to milk/water at work, so why don't you just use oats from a big packet?

What's the matter with you? Tesco and all other supermarkets sell plain porridge oats, I buy the Jumbo oats.

mabon1 why so abrupt?Shinamae has explained that she takes the porridge to work for her 20 minutes break. She only has access to a microwave.

There’s nothing the matter with me and why do you have to be so bloody rude?

But you did post it.
(Did you mean you wished you hadn’t posted it?
Judging by the responses, I was not alone in wondering why)

It worried me at first because I thought it was in £ and you were paying over the odds for oats! 😂

We buy a one kilogram bag of oats from Sainsburys or Aldi, costs around £1 and I make porridge with just oats and water, DH has half milk and half water. Neither of us adds sugar, sometimes we add fruit such as frozen raspberries, prunes or half a banana.

We always make our porridge in the microwave.

So do I, so I'm hoping I won't be jumped on by the Porridge Police.

Yes, it should’ve said I wished I hadn’t posted it
I apologise profusely for causing you such angst about porridge
I will now be much more careful about what I post 😵‍💫😂

I saw porridge pots in Gregg's this morning.
One was plain others had fruit and probably sugar.
I didn't have time to do a taste test but was tempted.
I have never cooked porridge but may try in the microwave.
They were giving out free sachets of flahavans at the gym.
No added sugar in them.
Also Lidl do sachets in a box either with golden syrup or plain no sugar.

growstuff Tue 05-Nov-24 12:30:47

Quaker do sachets of plain oats too, although I don't know how they compare price-wise with buying a big box and measuring out a portion.

Please come back and help us understand here...
I have never bought oats with sugar in.
Oats are just that... oats.

I agree. I don't know how OP has failed to buy sugar free oats in the supermarkets. Readily available on all the shelves.

watermeadow Tue 05-Nov-24 20:35:27

A bag of supermarket oats costs mere pennies.
I can’t be bothered to cook them so just pour on boiling water, wait a few minutes then eat. If I want a really fancy breakfast I’ll add oat milk.

Yes, I failed and failed miserably because I wanted the SACHETS for work….😵‍💫🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️
And that is the last time I will say that….😂😂

Shinamae - I did ask/suggest that...

I think you have not been treated very well in this thread to be honest.

Pleased you eventually found what you wanted. 👍

Water off off a ducks back 😂😂
But thank you anyway…🌻

Grannynannywanny Tue 05-Nov-24 21:13:09

Shinamae your explanation of needing the sachets for a quick work break seems to be falling on deaf ears. I’m exasperated on your behalf. If I were you I’d save your breath for cooling your porridge 😆

Jaxjacky Tue 05-Nov-24 21:53:18

Shinamea perhaps wheat biscuits would’ve been a better idea 🙂
Just don’t do what I did once, took a tub of frozen soup to work for microwaving at lunch time - it was chicken stock..🤮
