Half a cucumber

DH is the only one in our household that eats cucumber. You used to be able to buy half a cucumber but I don’t see any now and I hate waste. Does anyone know who still sells them or what I can do with half a cucumber other than put it in the food waste?

One thing you can do with other half of a whole cucumber is to pickle it and have it with cold meat or in a cheese sandwich. Cut it up and pack it into a very clean jar that has a lid (preferably one that has previously held pickle, as the lid will be lacquered to resist rusting from the vinegar) And a few black peppercorns and/or other whole spices and top up with a mix of 50/50% or 75/25% vinegar and water, with a little sugar dissolved in it, put on the lid and keep in the fridge. This will not last as long as "proper" pickles, it needs to be eaten in a week or so or the cucumber gets soft, but it sparks up a sandwich or salad, and it is better than throwing it out.

I've just started lining my drawers. Ooh err, Missus!

MissAdventure

Fresh veg never seems to last well, these days.
A day or so, and they've had it.

Mine usually last very well. I always remove any plastic wrapping that makes them wet and much more likely to deteriorate, though. And I line the bottom of the salad/veg drawer with a tea towel, also to absorb damp.

Tescos have a guaranteed freshness promise on some items, don't they?

keepingquiet Tue 12-Nov-24 15:42:34

I also buy the mini cucumbers, so easy to store and use.

I don't use anything special to store my veg but I do only buy from Tesco, they seem to keep fresh for long enough for me.

Except those avocados- I stopped buying those.

It's a whole different world, the world of fruit and veg bags!! smile
I just ordered some (cheaper than the lakeland ones) to give them a try.

Free delivery, lots of bags for £3.99.

MissAdventure Tue 12-Nov-24 15:13:01

It's hard to believe they make so much difference, looking at the pics.

MissAdventure Tue 12-Nov-24 15:11:50

Great minds, so they say,

MissAdventure Tue 12-Nov-24 15:11:24

Thank you,
I'll have look on amazon, I think.
May be able to get the lakeland ones there. smile

Georgesgran Tue 12-Nov-24 15:11:07

Of course, Amazon have them too.

Georgesgran Tue 12-Nov-24 15:09:40

I got mine from QVC years ago, MissA but Lakeland sell 20 for £9.99.

Babs03 Tue 12-Nov-24 15:05:19

I buy the little cucumbers in Lidl, several in a punnet, not sure if they are there right now but these would answer your problem inasmuch as there isn't as much as a full cucumber.

Indigo8 Tue 12-Nov-24 15:04:37

Waitrose sell midi cucumbers.

MissAdventure Tue 12-Nov-24 15:03:49

I don't know about these green bags.
Where could I get some please?

merlotgran Tue 12-Nov-24 14:57:11

Morrisons is the only place I can buy them as well. I also use the mini ones if I can’t get a half one.

Are the green bags washable and reusable?

Yes they are. I’ve never been sure that they do work ( they certainly don’t help with bananas) but they do seem to work with lettuce and cucumbers.

Don’t know about cucumbers, but I swear by those green bags - they keep vegetables fresh, often for weeks.

It's like this, ArthurCucumbet felt that being separated from his other Arth, was kind of traumatic and in the interests of keeping the Cucumber family together they're now sold together. They even recorded a song about it, chorus went something like this "De dum de dum de dum you can make me whole again"

downtoearth Tue 12-Nov-24 14:13:24

I use the mini ones and mini mixed peppers for salads

Greenfinch Tue 12-Nov-24 14:08:50

I did wonder about the minis when I saw them in Lidl so perhaps I ought to try them.

Mazgg Tue 12-Nov-24 14:05:28

I buy baby cucumbers from Tesco. They seem to keep well. When my puppy was teething she loved them!

lixy Tue 12-Nov-24 14:04:23

We buy packs of mini ones in Lidl too. They last well in the fridge though, so said upthread, better in the body of the fridge rather than the salad drawer.

EkwaNimitee Tue 12-Nov-24 13:37:42

There’s only one of me…I haven’t found half cucumbers for ages and a whole one is too much. I have taken to buying the small packs of mini ones to avoid waste but I think they’re probably more expensive than a half one if you have that choice

Greenfinch Tue 12-Nov-24 13:32:33

Midi sounds interesting!
