Condensed mushroom soup

I have always used the condensed soups as my mum did. The chicken mushroom and tomato soups are a good standby if I’m not making my own pans of soup. The tomato is good for chilli and any other dishes using tomato sauce. The chicken I use to make pot pie and casseroles. The mushroom added to vegetables makes a nice pie or a risotto. The chicken and mushroom make nice vol au vent fillings undiluted with any additional extras. I buy the ready made vol au vent shells for over the holidays they are available in Aldi.

B & M usually have it for 75p. As it's at least £1.50 in the major supermarkets I snap up few tins at a time.

No B&M anywhere near here alas.

In a similar vein, does anyone know if you can still buy tinned creamed mushrooms. These used to be readily available and were made by Cheswood (or something like that). They were perfect for vol au vent fillings. I searched high and low recently but to no avail.

I’ve used them for years. Campbells condensed soups are now made by Batchelors, or at least the ones I’ve been buying. The mushroom one makes a lovely creamy shepherds pie base, and I also use it for a chicken pie that is a great favourite with my grandson, and for a chicken and mushroom dish to eat with rice, similar to the one MOnica gives, but with fresh chicken. I used to use the tomato soup to make an oven baked risotto with meatballs, but it’s not a recipe that lends itself to small portions so I don’t make it so often these days.

Strangely, last night, I used Heinz mushroom soup with pork escalopes for 2 GC who are staying with me. They both pronounced it delish which is an achievement as the boy, who normally eats like a mouse, came back for seconds. He ‘doesn’t like’ mushrooms and had no idea the sauce was mushroom soup 🤣. I wonder if broccoli soup would have the same effect on him. 🤔. That would be progress!

Chicken a la King: Cold cooked chicken, a few sliced mushrooms, Campbells condensed mushroom soup, small tin evaporated milk. Fry mushrooms in a little butter, add chicken, pour milk and soup over mushrooms and chicken, mix and heat through

I've often made a mushroom quiche using condensed mushroom soup and eggs for the filling. Always well received with guests.
Also as already mentioned by Greenfinch and Witzend, it makes a good mushroom sauce for pasta.

I do the same meal but using mushrooms instead of tuna. It is quick , easy and very tasty.

Mmmm it does sound tasty and I’ll try it out thanks.
It may also work with a bit of grated cheese on top.🧀

What’s your lazy dinner Witzend ? Asking for a friend obvs 😁

For just the two of us, it’s a tin of tuna, drained and flaked, mixed with a warmed-/up tin of mushroom soup, not diluted, all mixed with just-cooked pasta, usually penne. And served with frozen peas.
I thought it sounded foul until I tried it - many years ago now!
It’s actually very tasty.

I love mushroom or chicken and mushroom soup.

Campbell’s has not been discontinued. It disappeared for a while but then re-appeared with a sharp increase in price. I don’t think there are as many varieties as there were though.

It is Witzend I think it’s the same recipe and very handy to have a tin or two stashed away, I used some a couple of nights ago.

I read (probably on here a while ago) that the Campbell’s version was going to be discontinued. I only use it for one occasional ‘ lazy dinner’ recipe, but would certainly have missed it. However, Crosse and Blackwell are now doing a condensed version - I have 3 tins in the cupboard.
Haven’t tried it yet but 🤞it’ll be as good.,
