I read (probably on here a while ago) that the Campbell’s version was going to be discontinued. I only use it for one occasional ā€˜ lazy dinner’ recipe, but would certainly have missed it. However, Crosse and Blackwell are now doing a condensed version - I have 3 tins in the cupboard.
Haven’t tried it yet but šŸ¤žit’ll be as good.,

It is Witzend I think it’s the same recipe and very handy to have a tin or two stashed away, I used some a couple of nights ago.

Campbell’s has not been discontinued. It disappeared for a while but then re-appeared with a sharp increase in price. I don’t think there are as many varieties as there were though.

What’s your lazy dinner Witzend ? Asking for a friend obvs 😁

I love mushroom or chicken and mushroom soup.

For just the two of us, it’s a tin of tuna, drained and flaked, mixed with a warmed-/up tin of mushroom soup, not diluted, all mixed with just-cooked pasta, usually penne. And served with frozen peas.
I thought it sounded foul until I tried it - many years ago now!
It’s actually very tasty.

Mmmm it does sound tasty and I’ll try it out thanks.
It may also work with a bit of grated cheese on top.šŸ§€

I do the same meal but using mushrooms instead of tuna. It is quick , easy and very tasty.

I've often made a mushroom quiche using condensed mushroom soup and eggs for the filling. Always well received with guests.
Also as already mentioned by Greenfinch and Witzend, it makes a good mushroom sauce for pasta.

Chicken a la King: Cold cooked chicken, a few sliced mushrooms, Campbells condensed mushroom soup, small tin evaporated milk. Fry mushrooms in a little butter, add chicken, pour milk and soup over mushrooms and chicken, mix and heat through

B & M usually have it for 75p. As it's at least £1.50 in the major supermarkets I snap up few tins at a time.

Strangely, last night, I used Heinz mushroom soup with pork escalopes for 2 GC who are staying with me. They both pronounced it delish which is an achievement as the boy, who normally eats like a mouse, came back for seconds. He ā€˜doesn’t like’ mushrooms and had no idea the sauce was mushroom soup 🤣. I wonder if broccoli soup would have the same effect on him. šŸ¤”. That would be progress!

I’ve used them for years. Campbells condensed soups are now made by Batchelors, or at least the ones I’ve been buying. The mushroom one makes a lovely creamy shepherds pie base, and I also use it for a chicken pie that is a great favourite with my grandson, and for a chicken and mushroom dish to eat with rice, similar to the one MOnica gives, but with fresh chicken. I used to use the tomato soup to make an oven baked risotto with meatballs, but it’s not a recipe that lends itself to small portions so I don’t make it so often these days.

In a similar vein, does anyone know if you can still buy tinned creamed mushrooms. These used to be readily available and were made by Cheswood (or something like that). They were perfect for vol au vent fillings. I searched high and low recently but to no avail.

No B&M anywhere near here alas.

I have always used the condensed soups as my mum did. The chicken mushroom and tomato soups are a good standby if I’m not making my own pans of soup. The tomato is good for chilli and any other dishes using tomato sauce. The chicken I use to make pot pie and casseroles. The mushroom added to vegetables makes a nice pie or a risotto. The chicken and mushroom make nice vol au vent fillings undiluted with any additional extras. I buy the ready made vol au vent shells for over the holidays they are available in Aldi.

The price of soup has rocketed. Heinz chicken was £1.80 for a tin that now only serves one. Strangely you could also buy 5 tins for £5.00.A tin used to feed 3 of us.

Jamie Oliver used a tin of Campbell's in a recipe on his Fast & Simple programme this week. He has suggested many ways that tinned food can be used in cooking.

So many things have shrunk. Years ago Ryvita sold a tin that was the exact fit for a packet of crispbreads. Nowadays a packet fits in with space to spare for another half a dozen Ryvita's. Prices up and quantity down and don't get me started on the measly size of Cadbury's chocolate bars compared to years ago.

I saw that Ā£5 offer last week and was tempted but my son was with me and said my homemade soup was much better with no additives or ā€œextrasā€.

My Mum used to buy the Campbells soups and was very inventive with them. They were cheap then.

Greenfinch Thu 14-Nov-24 09:22:16

No B&M near me either.šŸ˜’ I use Campbells condensed tomato soup to flavour mince but feel it is now rather expensive for this so will stick to the pasta dish with the mushroom soup adding some evaporated milk as mentioned up thread.

Witzend weve used the very same recipe for many many years. It is quick and very tasty. It was certainly used when camping with kids.

The tomato one has a delicious chilli recipe on. I usually use tinned taco mixed beans in tomato sauce rather than kidney beans, add 1/2 tsp celery salt, 1 tbsp tomato ketchup. 1 tbsp brown sauce once the mince mix is cooking, and the original recipe says to use a red onion and, if I have one, I do but, if not, I just substitute a bog standard brown onion. I have other chilli recipes and they are nice but this one is very tasty and takes hardly any time to cook

I have used the Cross and Blackwell Mushroom soup when cooking a slow beef casserole - it makes the most delicious gravy! - I also buy several tins when I find them as not stocked widely.

Greenfinch Thu 14-Nov-24 16:29:23

Does anyone know if the celery one is still available?. I used to like that.
