Condensed mushroom soup

I read (probably on here a while ago) that the Campbell’s version was going to be discontinued. I only use it for one occasional ā€˜ lazy dinner’ recipe, but would certainly have missed it. However, Crosse and Blackwell are now doing a condensed version - I have 3 tins in the cupboard.
Haven’t tried it yet but šŸ¤žit’ll be as good.,

Easy to make, if you can't find a tin to buy. I make lovely mushroom soup, no gluten, soy or questionable flavourings.

Good quick recipe. Put any white fish in a casserole dish, cover with lemon juice, and a tin of condensed mushroom soup, then grated cheese, few pats of butter, and breadcrumbs. Leave in oven until brown.

Marmardoit I will continue to seek out the celery one . I know their condensed oxtail has been discontinued and also the pea I think so I guess celery has gone the same way.

In the 1970's I had the Campbell's cook book. Full of recipes using their condensed soups. I found the recipes were very useful when camping with our children. I might try the chilli recipe, posted above, then freeze portions.

Does anyone know if the celery one is still available?. I used to like that.

I've not seen the celery soup for along time. I used to keep that and the mushroom soup in. Made a quick, easy meal when we were fitting in all the after school activities.

The price shot up very suddenly.

Yes, mushroom condensed is good for making slo-cooker casseroles go further. ASDA's lentil soup is good too, but isn't condensed.

I love these recipes.Thank you for sharing but I’ll have to go and check these soups for gluten. So many of them have barley or wheat in them.

The first time my daughter saw condensed mushroom soup, with meat floating around in it, she ran away and hid. smile

Yes, there is tuna pasta bake on my tin of tomato soup.

Primrose53 Thu 14-Nov-24 20:55:55

I seem to remember Campbell’s putting little recipes on their soup labels.

When we first got married I used to do layers of tuna, condensed mushroom soup, potato crisps and chopped hard boiled egg in a dish in the oven, served with peas. It sounds revolting, but was delicious. All the ingredients were very inexpensive too!

Chickato soup is nice. Mix chicken and tomato.

Years ago I used to make stuffed peppers, sausage meat and onion, mushrooms too I think, fried with garlic, stuffed into the just cooked peppers, then baked with condensed tomato soup for the sauce. Beansprouts went well with it I recall, and rice.
I get condensed mushroom soup in Home Bargains, but I haven’t seen any other flavours.

The price of soup has rocketed. Heinz chicken was £1.80 for a tin that now only serves one. Strangely you could also buy 5 tins for £5.00.A tin used to feed 3 of us.

Don’t buy Heinz is the answer kircubbin plenty of own brand soups are just as tasty, on their own or used in a dish. M&S own brand is 65p, others are a similar price.

Witzend weve used the very same recipe for many many years. It is quick and very tasty. It was certainly used when camping with kids.

Yes, my mum used to make it too - but she'd add tinned sweetcorn to hers instead of peas, and sometimes top it with grated cheese.

I had a chum who was a Hospital Dietician also a good cook.
She used to use the Mushroom one with added tins of Mushrooms to fill Vol-au-vants. Sounded grim but was really nice.

I have used the Cross and Blackwell Mushroom soup when cooking a slow beef casserole - it makes the most delicious gravy! - I also buy several tins when I find them as not stocked widely.

I have always used the condensed soups as my mum did. The chicken mushroom and tomato soups are a good standby if I’m not making my own pans of soup. The tomato is good for chilli and any other dishes using tomato sauce. The chicken I use to make pot pie and casseroles. The mushroom added to vegetables makes a nice pie or a risotto. The chicken and mushroom make nice vol au vent fillings undiluted with any additional extras. I buy the ready made vol au vent shells for over the holidays they are available in Aldi.

The tomato one has a delicious chilli recipe on. I usually use tinned taco mixed beans in tomato sauce rather than kidney beans, add 1/2 tsp celery salt, 1 tbsp tomato ketchup. 1 tbsp brown sauce once the mince mix is cooking, and the original recipe says to use a red onion and, if I have one, I do but, if not, I just substitute a bog standard brown onion. I have other chilli recipes and they are nice but this one is very tasty and takes hardly any time to cook

No B&M near me either.šŸ˜’ I use Campbells condensed tomato soup to flavour mince but feel it is now rather expensive for this so will stick to the pasta dish with the mushroom soup adding some evaporated milk as mentioned up thread.

I saw that Ā£5 offer last week and was tempted but my son was with me and said my homemade soup was much better with no additives or ā€œextrasā€.

My Mum used to buy the Campbells soups and was very inventive with them. They were cheap then.

So many things have shrunk. Years ago Ryvita sold a tin that was the exact fit for a packet of crispbreads. Nowadays a packet fits in with space to spare for another half a dozen Ryvita's. Prices up and quantity down and don't get me started on the measly size of Cadbury's chocolate bars compared to years ago.

Jamie Oliver used a tin of Campbell's in a recipe on his Fast & Simple programme this week. He has suggested many ways that tinned food can be used in cooking.
