As Fiona says hard cheese has very little lactose
It might sound strange but as a dietitian e
With two lactose intolerant sons I used liquidised porridge and cheddar to make a sauce for cauliflower, fish pie etc when they were young
I am also lactose intolerant and can only use limited amounts of lactose reduced milk but can take double cream as that contains limited amount of lactose reduced milk Unlike some of the cream cheese spreads which actually contain milk.
It really is a case of trial and error

We are lactose intolerant, and we use Arla lactose free cream, it works exactly the same as ordinary cream in recipes. I buy it in Sainsburys, but most supermarkets do it I think. I agree with FionaB23 in that hard cheese doesn’t affect my son or myself, although soft cheese does. Lacto free Philadelphia is good if you want soft cheese.

Just a wee note to say that despite the marketing hype hard cheeses like cheddar naturally contain very little lactose and most people with a lactose intolerance can eat them without any issues. You can also buy lactase enzymes from boots so that you are able to take lactose containing foods without any unpleasant side effects.

If you have become lactose intolerant after a tummy bug then it is likely that it will be a temporary lactose intolerance and by having small amounts of lactose the tolerance should increase.

My husband is lactose intolerant. We tried Flora plant cream. It was nothing like cream. He loves butter and says that Lactofree spread is very much like butter.

Lactofree do both a cream and a cream cheese, both of which I’ve used in sauces. They are fine and don’t spilt etc. I tend to use the cream cheese from preference.

I have recently realised that lactose makes my irritable bowel worse, so I have gone over to lactose free milk and cheese, although I don't eat a lot of cheese these days, I like a creamy sauce and have always used creme fraiche for this, has anybody found a lactose free or plant based cream ok to use in savoury dishes, were they ok or does it separate?
