More "Wokery"? Meat-free Christmas sandwiches.

Before I start my post I should say that I'm not anti veggie or vegan and do prepare (or buy) a fair few meat free meals.
I've just read the latest email newsletter from Good Housekeeping.
www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/food/food-reviews/g25049321/best-christmas-sandwiches/?HearstNode=2FB6EB58F4C705ACF6F91ED2CCC0A1E006E5A6813788E1F5303F4BA9C925FF00&utm_source=crm&utm_term=SUBS_N&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=GDH_N_20241124_GOODLIFE
Do we really believe that 7 of their selected 10 "Christmas Sandwiches" should be vegan or veggie? The vast majority of UK eaters (and presumably their readers) are carnivores and, whilst we might sometimes have a meal without meat, their "winners" do not represent a good choice overall.
I appreciate that the vegetarians and vegans amongst the Gransnet readers will be perfectly happy with the GH choices, so please be kind to me!

What's the problem?

Chocolatelovinggran Mon 25-Nov-24 15:31:27

Perhaps they just tasted better ?

NotSpaghetti Mon 25-Nov-24 15:22:12

cc immot sure why you are calling this out".
It was a panel of blind tasters (presumably omnivores as some were meat). This is just the results.

Frankly if you want something different and new for Christmas sandwiches it's not at all the same as Christmas day treats!

You may like to see what else they have been testing.... lots of (entirely) meat products here:

It’s nice to find something a little different when treating yourself to a Christmas sandwich so I imagine a well flavoured vegetarian sandwich might well appeal to non vegetarian testers and customers alike. It would be interesting to know how many of the lower placed sandwiches were meat based!

Forgot to add why to you think its workery !!!!!

Nothing to do with wokery. Many of us are not veggie or vegan, but really try to eat less meat, and actually really enjoy it.

GH is just saying which sandwich people prefer. Personally I would always choose a brie and cranberry or grape, but that's because I really don't like anything with even a trace of fat on and sandwich shops aren't always so fussy.

Not sure why you perceive that as "wokery," which in any case just means awareness, although it's come to be derogatory and I'm really not sure why.

Etoile2701 Mon 25-Nov-24 15:12:56

Why is it wokery?

GrammarGrandma Mon 25-Nov-24 15:11:21

I didn't know :"Christmas sandwiches" were a thing. I occasionally make myself a cheese and pickle sandwich - maybe about once a month for lunch. I have been a vegetarian for over 55 years and am very happy to be woke. In fact I am a tofu-eating, Guardian-reading woketerata.

Alison333 Mon 25-Nov-24 15:07:23

Perhaps the reason why the non-meat sandwiches scored highly is that there is a limit to what you can do with a Christmas themed meat sandwich. Turkey and .....?

There's more variety in vegetarian or vegan sandwiches!

Not 'woke' at all.

cookiemonster66 Mon 25-Nov-24 13:57:49

8.6 million people in the UK now follow a meat free diet, that is 16%, growing every year whether for ethical, environmental or health reasons - nothing to do with being woke! the food industry are making sure that everyone has a choice, and to be honest, even carnivores will eat the veggie options, but the veggies cannot eat the meat options, so better chance of them being bought!

I’m an omnivore too. Do you think we ought to start and announce it, or demand that it prefaces foods?

I think the best response to the accusation of “woke” is Kathy Burke’s “I love being woke. It’s better than being an ignorant *** t**t”. I’ve left out the rude bits.

I love Kathy - and that quote is spot on. I'm not vegetarian, and I don't often buy pre-packed sandwiches, but a good few years ago, Tesco used to sell a mushroom sandwich (if I remember correctly, it had cream cheese and possibly a touch of horseradish in it) and although it sounds a bit weird, it was absolutely delicious!

Not all who choose the vegan options are vegans. Carnivores can eat them too because sometimes they just taste good!

I agree. I'm not a carnivore though - I'm an omnivore. It's a well balanced diet and no pretentious as

Fleurpepper Mon 25-Nov-24 13:08:10

Brilliant, yes smile

Brie and cranberry sounds lovely. Honestly many will end up eating lots of meat over Christmas and will be looking forward to something a bit different.

Yes Canadian Gran I won't be eating them either, as I have already commented I do like some veggie and vegan food, there are some lovely restaurants and cafes now serving this and the quality is really high. But premade sandwiches leave me cold, especially because I hate mayonnaise.
I make my own sandwiches every time, doesn't take long.

Agreed.

If we're having sandwich food - we make it ourselves. We've tried at various places - never as good as we make and too expensive.

Elusivebutterfly Mon 25-Nov-24 12:38:22

I eat meat most days at home but, when it comes to buying sandwiches, I avoid meat. It is often cheap, processed unpleasant meat or smoked ham/bacon. I find cheese, egg, fish or veggie much nicer options.

Hellsbelles Mon 25-Nov-24 12:27:24

I'm the least ' woke ' person you are ever likely to meet ( or meat haha ) but I have been vegetarian for nearly 40 years .
I am happy for you to tuck into your meat sandwich / meat meal , whilst I tuck into my non meat meal .
This magazine has done a survey for the best sandwiches it just happens that some of them are vegetarian / non meat . Get over it .

Stella14 Mon 25-Nov-24 12:19:42

As others have said, plenty of people who are not vegan, or vegetarian sometimes choose tasty vegetarian options. No ine is going to force you to eat them. To be honest, you’d already lost me at ‘wokery’. It’s such a cheap shot that says more about those using it, than it does about those it’s aimed at.

Mollygo Sun 24-Nov-24 21:30:46

Pret 1- No doesn’t appeal at all. £6 and we keep being told how cheap vegetables are compared to meat.

Nero 2- No I don’t like thyme and it tends to be overpowering

Costa 3- Yes, but Booths does it better and for less

Asda 4- yes, but no need to wait for Christmas. I like it with grapes, or bacon or cranberry at any time of year.

Sainsbury’s 5- I’d buy that, but though I am a sprout fan, it doesn’t say good in a sandwich to me.

Pret 6- possible, it would depend on the quality of the chicken

Waitrose 7- makes me so glad I’m not vegan

Aldi 8- yes. I’d buy and eat that even though it says vegan

Coop 9- No a slight mushroom note doesn’t sound appealing.

Co-op 10- I’d have to taste it to decide.
Sage and onion stuffing with beef?

Thanks for the link though.

Gosh, I didn't realize Christmas sandwiches were a thing. I have a dislike of pre-made sandwiches, so I wouldn't try any of them!

Nothing wrong with veggie sandwiches though!

Babs03 Sun 24-Nov-24 20:21:40

Well we like veggie or vegan food sometimes for a change, it can be delicious, and am sure as always the carnivores will be well provided for this xmas.
Am just wondering why eating veggie Xmas sandwiches is WOKE?
Feels like a bit of a leap.

Ilovedogs22 Sun 24-Nov-24 20:11:13

My children call me woke because I'm vegan!😄
