Cadbury's Current Owners Might Think Again.....

........now that they've lost the Royal Warrant.
They've messed around too much with the Dairy Milk recipe - presumably ambitiously cutting corners in their profit chasing - and trashed a National Treasure.
Serves them right.

I'm very pleased to see that so many of you feel as I do....that Cadburys chocolate is just not the same as it used to be. I was also surprised recently to see that palm oil has been added to it. Completely unnecessary!

Palm oil and tons of sugar.
Terrys choc orange now taste horrible as well.

MissAdventure Tue 24-Dec-24 10:39:43

What I've found is that palm oil and sugar have been taken out, and reduced.

I agree about Terry’s chocolate orange too.
If I was given one, I’d give it away. It’s horrible.

Thank you Grunty, will check that out.

Lathyrus3 Tue 24-Dec-24 11:51:09

Grunty

Homestead62 Lindt do a gluten free chocolate. I've attached a copy of their Web page for you.

Need some help here: I didn’t know there was gluten in Lindt. Do either you or Homestead know about any other chocolates? One of my guests is coeliac.

I’ve put out a bowl of chocolates - Cadbury s Heroes and Celebrations.

I know he might be genned up on them and he can just not eat any but it seems a bit mean. If I knew which ones were ok I could make him a little bowl of his own.

He does have a sweet tooth!

Casdon Tue 24-Dec-24 11:55:44

I’m gluten free, and chocolate on its own never contains gluten, it’s the added flavours that can introduce it. Stick to plain milk or dark, and you’ll be fine.

I feel rather sad about the demise of Cadburys. My parents grew up near to Bourneville and Mum's first job was in Cadburys accounts department. She said that girls working in the factory were allowed to eat as much chocolate as they liked but after the first week they didn't want to eat another chocolate. The Cadbury family were held in very high regard. A highlight of any visits to Gran was when she produced a bag of mis-shapes or prototype bars which she'd bought from the Cadbury shop.

I gave up on Cadbury when it was taken over and haven’t had any since. Same for Terry’s chocolate Orange. I love dark chocolate.

My go to usual chocolate is bars from Aldi. Otherwise dark chocolates from Waitrose or a couple of smaller suppliers Friars and Martins. The small companies produce old fashioned chocolates such as violet creams, chocolate gingers etc. It’s all very yummy! Hotel Chocolate used to be my go to but it’s now too expensive and I prefer the others.

I still like Cadbury choc, as do all the family, husbands fav is Galaxy though and my fav is a toss up between Hotel Chocolate and most Swiss chocolate brands

MissAdventure Thu 26-Dec-24 11:18:29

A bar of Cadbury fruit and nut. 😻

Homestead62 Thu 26-Dec-24 11:40:38

Lathyrus, Heroes is usually fine for me except I cannot eat the Dinky Deckers ( the Double Decker ones). In Celebrations, I stick to the Snicker ones and the Galaxy chocolate ones. If your friend has been Coeliac/ gluten intolerant a long time, they will have a good idea what they can eat. The only other sweets I know that are GF are Quality Street, Milk Tray or Roses. I got a box of Roses but they are awful.

America. Well what did we expect?

So sad but I agree warrants are prestigious and the USA has ruined a ‘calorific treasure’Hopefully the Royal family will research finding a worthy recipient - preferably in Scotland, N Ireland or Wales. These areas are in need of a boost. The Prince of Wales needs to work at deserving his title - do more for Wales and Scotland.

wibblywobblywobblebottom Thu 26-Dec-24 12:03:29

The Royal Warrant is meaningless, it's not a sign of quality. They are granted by the royal family to companies that deliver products to them on a regular basis. Some unscrupulous companies will charge extra for if they have the Royal Warrant on their products. They are for the Hyacinth Bouquets of this world.

MaggsMcG Thu 26-Dec-24 12:26:57

None of the once famous tins (plastic tubs) of traditional Christmas chocolates taste the same any more. I try a few every year to give them a chance but they are all horrid. Hero's, Quality Street, Roses, Celebrations all used to be lovely not anymore. I opt for a Terry's Chocolate Orange or their Mint version or M&Ms crispy

JaneJudge Thu 26-Dec-24 12:28:50

I didn't even know it had a royal warrant

You're right there mae. Cadbury's chocolate has definitely changed over the last few years. I don't know which brand of chocolate I prefer. I have tried Hotel Chocolat but although they are nice not as exciting as they make out. I'd rather have a box of Maltesers.

Lindt to me is the best chocolate available at the moment. I agree Hotel Chocolate used to be good, but Lindt is far better.

MissAdventure Thu 26-Dec-24 12:59:48

I get Hotel Chocolat every year; Christmas, Easter, birthdays, and they make me shudder.

They're too much. Sweet and cloying, and soft.

win Thu 26-Dec-24 13:05:27

Try the Danish chocolate Fris Holm or Anthon Berg, both wonderful chocolates.

MissAdventure Thu 26-Dec-24 13:11:35

As long as there are Ferrero in the world, I'm happy.
I happen to know there are some with my name on, wrapped up, still. smile

Aveline Thu 26-Dec-24 13:50:58

I'm very lucky and am given Hotel Chocolat boxes several times a year. I find them so rich that I can only manage one or two a day. Fine by me!

petal53 Thu 26-Dec-24 13:55:27

Quick bob in before the family arrive; I was given my absolute favourite, Leonidas, and my DH always chooses the ones I love (you can choose your flavours on the website) and I’ve put them away to eat after it’s all settled down.
I love Belgium chocolates but especially Leonidas.

I have always been a dark chocolate fan, so most of the cadbury milk stuff was not to my taste but friends who like milk say it has gone downhill. It is very sad when you have worked for a firm whose attitude and quality align with your own views and so many people will no longer feel that satisfaction of working for them. As a child I lived in the east riding of yorkshire and of course we had the quaker chocolate makers, like Fry and Terry,s . I remember there was the frys bar of cream centred dark chocolate with the boys on the cover, but the best one was the frys 5 centre one. I used to wonder how they did it, on a small scale, but it was so great. Dark chocolate covering and each of the pieces of the bar were different flavour, orange, coffee and I think lime. I always loved the coffee one best, my sister loved the orange, but it was clever. If there was only limited funds, you got one bar that had the flavours that suited 3 of us. Dont know if they still make such a bar, this was over 70 years ago. i loved the old box of Black Magic, which had soft and hard centres but they have changed a lot of those flavours now.

MissAdventure Thu 26-Dec-24 14:59:51

Aldi dark chocolate is delicious.

ordinarygirl Thu 26-Dec-24 15:30:23

As a vegan, the recipe means even the dark chocolate is no longer suitable. Public criticism was withheld as I always felt disloyal as I was born in Birmingham. Now it is no longer British the gloves are off .

Mojack26 Thu 26-Dec-24 16:49:01

Agree..Lindt far far nicer plus I prefer dark chocolate. I also like Bournville
