New slogan from Waitrose apparently .
I came back from the supermarket this morning to find my two orchids, an Aloe Vera and my Swiss Cheese Plant hiding under the bed. hmm

I have been eating more than 30 types of plants a week since the 70s. It has never been rocket science. Products from plants all count eg rice, pasta, certain oils, seeds, herbs, spices but I have always included varieties of actual living plants and multiple colours in my diet, while avoiding making or buying acrylamides and other destructive harmful `food ` products

It has been very worthwhile, my microbiome is very healthy which means that I have a cheerful optimistic outlook and very good immunity eg butyrate production in my gut is high, a short chain fatty acid, which protects my body. There are countless other protective and helpful gut bacteria

I grew up in a heavy smoke-filled atmosphere and the epigenetics of what would be happening to affect my health was down to me after I got married and had my own home. I decided there and then that I am what I eat

In tandem with the 30 plants, I eat very little meat, organic. As far as possible, no chemicals enter my body and I have also filtered water since the 70s, having seen the chemicals added to water in order to make it `safe` to drink

I love my lifestyle, I love my energy, my enthusiasms and my food and I never sit in a corner waiting for others to provide what my body needs

Oh missed potato and tomato’s out going up
Who can possibly afford 30 different plants a week and if you’re living alone they d go off before you got to the end of the week
And what possible good could a sprinkling of a herb or spice
do to your health they are seasoning Oh I could count pepper then
Seems another daft craze to me

I eat my veg every day but there’s no way I’d eat 30 different ones in a week
How can a pinch of spice or herb count ???
I don’t eat meat or fish so I do eat a variety of veg but not 30 different ones
In a week I d probably have onions mushrooms cauliflower sweetcorn brocalli peas leeks, beans grapes apple banana which is a third of the latest recommended

Mogsmaw. Oh dear. I ‘ll have to reevaluate then. Yesterday I made cawl. Carrots, leeks, celery, lentils, swede and potatoes. 1 persimmon and a pear at lunch and berries, strawberry, blackberry and blueberries for pudding in the evening. So 11 different things. … Today I have to eat different fruit and veg? Is that right?

We were being relentlessly advised, over and over, not too many years ago to stuff ourselves with Tuna on the assumption it was a highly beneficial Brain Food.
There were tales of parents making their kiddies eat, eat, eat endless tuna prior to exams - I hope that's just an urban myth.
Now there's increasing suspicion that tuna is likely to be contaminared with mercury. I wish The Experts would make their minds up and all sing from the same hymn sheet, one way or another.

Whatever next eh! ..eye of newt or toe of frog 🐸

FlitterMouse yes I watched those Christmas lectures- good weren’t they!
So it seems we are (in the context of nutrition) largely a product of our environment, and to a lesser extent our genes.
That figures.
Still I’m glad the dog can’t reach our taps.🙀

Lion's mane is a tree fungus that's said to have a variety of health benefits but a lot of conflicting information online plus some serious warnings.

Really? Goodness me.

I notice M&S have a range of Brain Food. confused

M&S have sent an email today telling me about drinks ‘packed with Lions mane’ 🦁

Seriously, do we actually NEED all these different ones? There must surely be enough vitamins and minerals in a smaller number? Only a limited range is available in season and some of us are conscious of air miles used to transport exotic fruits, for example. ( Sorry, I know this was intended as a light hearted thread).

Isn't it to do with the microbiome which improves digestion, the immune systems and metabolism. Different plants have different microbiomes.

I was surprise to hear on the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures that Chris Van Tulleken's microbiome will have more in common with his pet cat's microbiome than with his twin brother Xander's ... because the cat drinks from the kitchen tap!

Does Christmas cake count?

I’m sure it does… currants, sultanas, raisins, cherries. Also lemon in the marzipan!

henetha Fri 10-Jan-25 23:14:56

I don't really fancy eating my cacti collection.....oh the heartburn angry

Granmarderby10 Fri 10-Jan-25 23:12:05

Ooh I hope so- I am very suggestive where food is concerned. Going to have some now!😀

I count each different item, but then again, as I don't eat meat, eating a variety of fruit and veg is not too tricky. It doesn't have to be huge portions, a pinch of a spice or herb counts. As does dark chocolate!

PamelaJ1 Fri 10-Jan-25 22:53:54

I know that we are all a bit fed up of the advice that doled out day after day. This week you will live to 150(or thereabouts) if you only drink coffee in the morning!
However I do think that a varied diet makes sense and , as Monica already mentioned, 30 plants a week is so easy that one can bask in the glory of success 24/7. What’s not to like?

keepingquiet Fri 10-Jan-25 22:50:15

Chocolate plants are the way forward then?

Just had two pieces of dark chocolate but as for the plants- does wine count? Had two glasses of that too!

whiff laughter is often the very best medicine. But not too hard though until you’ve recovered a bit.
Get well soon and all the best.😺

Granmarderby10 Fri 10-Jan-25 22:26:49

Fruit is easy- peezy if expensive but if you’re really hard core you need to tackle veg such as Curley kale, spinach and unfamiliar grains and beans (other than baked beans) 😊

M0nica Fri 10-Jan-25 21:48:30

Whiff

RosiesMaw that made me laugh. Had heart attack on Monday moved to other other hospital for stent or stents fitted probably tomorrow.

Oh dear, hope all goes well and you are better soon. You are still posting so hopefullythat is a good sign.

Mogsmaw Fri 10-Jan-25 19:50:34

That’s “which I imagine you must be” . I don’t know what is happening with this autocorrect!

Mogsmaw Fri 10-Jan-25 19:48:36

I have four pieces of fruit a day, plus two vegetables ( sometimes more) with dinner. Therefore 7x6 =42 . Hurrah .

It’s to be 30 different plants a week. So if you are duplicating your fruit, Shiite imagine you must be, your calculations don’t work.
