I am trying to loose weight, so have cut bread
,potatoes and pasta from my diet. I miss potatoes though and I’m looking for alternatives to mash etc.

Tongue in cheek. I know about resistant starch etc. does that make frozen chips from supermarket healthier ❓

You don't have to cut any of those things from your diet in order to lose weight. You just have to eat less (of everything) and move more. In other words, burn off more calories than you take in. You don't need gimmicky diets, which are mostly there to keep someone in a job.
When my son was little, I lost weight eating Mars bars and crisps for lunch and normal meals the rest of the time. How? I couldn't drive at the time and his school was a mile away. The shops were a mile away in the opposite direction. Walking 4-6 miles a day did the trick.

My husband has just been diagnosed with Diabetes so instead of roast potatoes with Sunday roast I've been making roast cauliflower which is really yummy. Just toss in olive oil and add seasoning of choice, I find garlic granules and some cayenne tasty. Then roast broken up florets for 25 mins.

I've given up potatoes too. Except on Sundays when my son comes for dinner.
My daily dinner, almost every day, is fish or chicken with lots of green veg. And sometimes a stew or casserole.
Chips are a rare treat. And I do have frozen ready meals on standby for when my back is particularly bad.
I'm trying to be low sugar at the moment too. So sweet potatoes, which I love, are out too.
Is life worth living? grin

Maybe Turnip?

Parsnips / Acorn or butternut squash / Aubergine / Sweet potato / Celeriac / Daikon /

Go green: Green beans for example - steamed and / or sautéed in a bit of extra virgin olive oil ..

Try eddoes instead of potato. Like a potato but healthier and a slightly nutty taste.

We have cut our potato portions down my more than half and increased the other veggies - works for us. The weight is slowly coming off and we are both pre-type 2 so the reduction in sugar is helping too.

We don't eat white rice or pasta either, much prefer wholegrain alternatives in smaller portions.

Also, both of us have increased our water intake to 2 litres a day.

Turn the potatoes into resistant starch

Potato that has been cooked, refrigerated/frozen and reheated, the same for bread and pasta is resistant starch.

Llamedos13 Tue 21-Jan-25 14:22:51

Karmalady, can you explain how to turn potatoes into resistant starch?

pluckyluckyme Tue 21-Jan-25 14:12:51

150 grams of basmati rice is equivalent to 10 teaspoons of sugar. Yup, that shocked me. Sweet potatoes will send your sugar levels soaring. I eat lots of above ground veg, but minimise spinach etc that are high in oxalates which is bad for you. Protein, small amount of good quality dairy. No grains as not as good for you as first thought. I am diabetic etc and very insulin resistant - so do intermittent fasting as well. A GP called Unwin created a teaspoon table to help his patients - link phcuk.org/sugar/

May I suggest Paul Mckennas get control of your weight DVD? I have lost it in the moves but it hypnotises into realising that you can eat fried mars bars or similar and you won’t put weight. I eat and drink whatever I fancy and weight stays stable since reading Paul McKenna. I became so slim family were upset. Now I’m being encouraged to eat so much food I don’t want.

I have cut down the amount of potato and bread I eat - I like them too much to cut them out completely! I have lost some weight and hopefully it will stay off as I can stick to the following pretty easily.
No potatoes with evening meal and 2 slices of bread max per day.

PaperMonster2 Mon 20-Jan-25 20:56:10

As a Diabetic, I can’t eat potato so I eat either celeriac or swede instead.

pascal30 Mon 20-Jan-25 19:53:36

couscous, chickpeas, butter beans, kidney beans, lentils, quinoa

Treebee Mon 20-Jan-25 19:31:38

Halve the amount you’d usually eat, then you don’t have to cut anything out. My usual go to for an additional carb is 40g rice.

Margiknot Mon 20-Jan-25 19:29:23

Cauliflower rice ( cauliflower chopped up finely in a coffee grinder or blipped for a second or so in a liquidiser, fried) is low in carbohydrate. It can be a bit tasteless - herbs etc help- but works with tasty stews etc.

If you like a radishy flavour try Daikon. You could mash it or try slicing for chips.

I've been potato-less for so long I really don't bother about them anymore. While I still salivate at a mental image of a huge, fluffy baked potato loaded with butter and cheese it never crosses my mind when I prep dinner and I don't really miss them anymore. Same with bread. I've learnt to like other things.

Lathyrus3 Mon 20-Jan-25 19:18:49

A can of butter beans, mashed.
