Keeping butter in a butter dish

Now, I have discovered that ‘spreadable’ butter isn’t.
Do any of you keep ‘proper’ butter in a butter dish, and for how long?

Ours is in my late mum’s Tupperware butter dish. (No doubt very bad for us as it’s probably the wrong sort of plastic or something nowadays)

🤔

I have the matching cheese container 😀

I put half a block in the butter dish.
The rest is in the fridge.
I never put it back in the fridge, (unless I'm going away for more than a weekend) it stays out till it's eaten.
Sometimes it's gone quickly, sometimes it might be as long as a week(?)

My daughter gave me a ceramic butter dish, with lid as a gift. I keep half pound butter in there, the rest in the fridge

I've never liked butter, the only time I buy it is if I'm baking shortbread

I keep butter in a stainless steel insulated butter dish I bought from Lakeland. It keeps very well even in very hot weather.

I have the Lakeland double steel butterdish, too. I bought it when we lived in Nigeria and it kept the butter fresh even in permanently 30+ degree temps.

Once I put a new pack into the dish it stays on the worktop until it’s all gone. I don’t really know how long that is, I’ve never taken note.

I cut a pack of butter up in quarters each quarter lasts about two days in the dish the rest is kept in the fridge.

Butter dishes have to be scrupulously washed before placing another block of butter into - unless you want a rancid product.

Yes, I also have the matching cheese container, also inherited from mum!

I don’t think anyone has said they don’t scrupulously wash their butter dish before putting a new block in?

Obviously a butter dish police alert!

We have 2 - they go in the dishwasher. I think that works well enough.

I use Lurpak spreadable. It has a great taste, just like good ordinary butter.

I also have the stainless steel one from Lakeland, bought it many years ago. Keeps butter at perfect temperature summer and winter

I use a stone butter bell which holds about half a standard pack of butter. I change the water in the bottom half every 2nd day and my butter stays usable for days irrespective of the weather. I brought mine back from France over 20 years ago after using one in the holiday rental.

My sister uses proper butter, but had a problem as she doesn't use much at a time. I found a small butter dish in the local Quadrant ( Co-op) store that holds enough for a couple of sandwiches. So now when she gets up she cuts a lump of butter and puts it in the dish to leave out for the day's use, whilst the bulk goes straight back in the fridge. I personally use President spreadable butter, unlike others that use oils to make it softer President uses cream! It's lovely.

We use the only pure butter that is spreadable . It is by Marks and Spencer and can be found in laeger stores. It can be kept in the fridge . It is made in Nortern Ireland usind a very creamy milk .

I have always kept butter in a butter dish that stands on the kitchen counter, as butter kept in the fridge is too cold to spread.

Right now, I have a Le Creuset butter dish with lid, but previously, I had a cheap plastic one, which was equally as good, as far as keeping butter fresh, and had the added advantage that a butter loving cat could not get the lid off, as it had a rubber seal.

Now that I am alone, 200 g of butter last for a week at least, and more often for ten days, and is perfectly fresh at the end of that time.

A pack of butter always goes in the butter dish and is kept there on the work surface until used up. If the weather is particularly warm then it goes in the fridge.
Never had a problem with it going off and could be there fora couple of weeks as only me in the house and only used for breakfast toast or an occasional scone etc.

We have two butter dishes. Used alternatively.

I think that contains about a quarter rapeseed oil (from memory).
Could be wrong!

M&S do do a full butter spread - apparently churned specially to keep it soft. They also do one that contains rape seed oil.

We use Country life spreadable butter for sandwiches, toast etc & block butter for cooking - English of course, we need to be supporting British dairy farmers! We did have a very nice butter dish but I think it broke some time ago & we don't need it these days anyway. I can't imagine not keeping butter in the fridge...

So do we. We put about a third of the bar in each dish and keep one in a cool dark cupboard until needed. The other one stays on the counter top. It's usually used before it ever gets too soft or goes rancid.

No, it is actually 100% butter with a little added salt.

NotSpaghetti Tue 04-Mar-25 15:25:05

I think most people using butter have more than one butter dish.

AreWeThereYet thanks for the info re M&S spreadable butter.
Just looked it up.

Apologies Albangirl14 - I'd looked at a lot of spreadable butters recently as I'm trying to persuade my son to go back to butter (at his own home but he "can't be bothered" if it won't spread easily!
Does it really spread easily straight out of the fridge?
