Takeaways

Apparently there are people who regularly "phone for a takeaway" - and hot food gets delivered to their home! Extraordinary!

We have never had a takeaway except perhaps fish and chips from a fish and chip shop, maybe two or three times a year, usually at the seaside and eaten on the beach - avoiding marauding seagulls!

Even if you can't be bothered to cook, why would you "phone for a pizza" when you could easily transfer a frozen pizza from your freezer to your oven in less time and at half the cost?

Our favourite Indian restaurant closed last year. We regularly had takeaways from there so now we have a takeaway bag from Asda and it's almost as nice and far cheaper.

I do my own small raiti to go with it.

Why is it "extraordinary" to have a takeaway delivered?

It's more extraordinary that someone thinks it's extraordinary grin

Pretty much everything can be delivered these days so why not?

NotAGran55 Thu 13-Mar-25 18:32:58

We have never had food delivered, and only ever had one takeaway meal in the last 32 years.
There are no delivery services to our village, and the takeaway sauce stained the kitchen work surface!
We do eat out almost every week though.

Ooh, crazyH, you slovenly hussy! (Can I come please?!)

I’m actually having 8 of my friends over on Saturday for an Indian Takeaway - shock, horror 😱😱😱

Jaxjacky Thu 13-Mar-25 18:26:38

We have Indian food delivered 3/4 times a year, my days of having multiple spices in a cupboard (which lose their pungency in time) and catering for many have long. About £20 for us both, it’s a treat.

We still laugh at my daughter Re takeaways.
She phoned up for a pizza. The assistant asked for the address.
She told him. He said thats opposite us she said thats correct.if you look up I’m waving at you
That’s not the same daughter as the coffee and cake.

The daughter ordering a pizza is now an amazing cook with a blog on FB. 😁👽

All this reminded me of an amusing incident during lockdown. My GD who was living with at the time was involved in a remote lesson . A fellow student raised her hand and said “Have we nearly finished ,Miss? My pizza delivery is at the door.”

Fish and chips is a takeaway!

LadyGracie Thu 13-Mar-25 17:57:50

We’ve never had one, we pick up fish and chips a couple of times a year.

Barleyfields Thu 13-Mar-25 17:57:21

I had absolutely no idea you could get coffee and cake delivered, being a country bumpkin.

Margiknot Thu 13-Mar-25 17:55:19

Ooh ive seen delivery bikes waiting for coffee and cake!

Margiknot Thu 13-Mar-25 17:51:47

We rarely have a take away and usually collect it ourselves- the most recent occasion was fish and chips when family from overseas were staying.
I suspect many of us are the wrong demographic for ordering home delivered take aways. Those I know use firms such as just eat and deliveroo are mostly younger or busy working people - either singles meeting up or those with young families wanting a date night in.

Last takeaway was July last year. A curry with plain rice. Cost 50 pounds and was bland and watery.

Ilovedogs22 Thu 13-Mar-25 17:45:39

Ohh, that sounds very good, ringing for coffee & cake!
Could I get the number. 😊

Barleyfields Thu 13-Mar-25 17:44:26

Good grief! The expense!

I can't believe that people can't believe that others do things differently from them grin.

Is this a joke 😂 The British food takeaway industry is worth £26 Billion. That’s a year. And employs 50,000 people.
My daughter works from home. When she’s going to have a break she phones for a coffee and cake 😂

Nor can I.

Good job not everyone lives out in the countryside!

Barleyfields Thu 13-Mar-25 17:29:31

We have probably 3 or 4 takeaways a year as a treat. No delivery service out here in the sticks.

Ilovedogs22 Thu 13-Mar-25 17:28:58

Takeaways are fine once in a blue moon but my children waste so much money on them when they come down to visit us.
They always leave a load un-eaten & it make me cross as I know how much money they waste on the stuff! Then a few months later they ask for a hand-out! Ridiculous.🤔

Patsy70 Thu 13-Mar-25 17:27:32

Nothing wrong with a good takeaway, as an occasional treat. We have fish & chips, maybe every 6 or 8 weeks. Very rarely we’ll have a Chinese or an Indian - they are all extremely high quality. We don’t have them delivered, though.

kittylester Thu 13-Mar-25 17:09:12

We had something like that too 62Granny and it felt like real luxury.

We are lucky enough to have a most sorts of restaurants that do takeaways in our village so can walk (well DH can!!) to collect an Indian or Turkish meal. Chinese and pizzas are not gluten free. There is a fish and chip shop in another village that does GF and a (very classy) burger van visits once a month.

A frozen pizza is not a patch on a fresh one and Domino's deliver and do gf.

I enjoy a night off periodically and we are lucky enough to have such choice. We indulge, maybe, once a month.

62Granny Thu 13-Mar-25 16:42:53

We have an occasional Chinese or Thai takeaway but if it might only be once or twice a year. During lockdown a local chef who was paid off did start offering a Dine at home menu, they offered a Tapas menu & Greek menu which we ordered really enjoyed, like being on holiday😂 they would also do bespoke food delivery where you could give them a budget and they would create a menu for you. That was like going out for a nice meal and would be delivered plated and ready to eat, they would sometimes being the starters first, then main and dessert 30 mins later so everything not and presentation top notch unfortunately they do seem to do as many themed nights now only Sunday lunch. But you can still order the bespoke if you want. It suits us for a special occasion sometimes.

I can't believe that people can't believe that others do things differently from them grin.

Doesn't bother me what others do, but I can't believe how some people can afford so many takeaways (talking about my neighbours in particular).
