Trouble opening tin of salmon.

I love a tinned red salmon sandwich, it was a treat when I was a child. Red salmon with a sprinkle of vinegar crusty bread and lettuce. I always buy the larger tin no trouble opening it with my basic tin opener then put the rest in a glass container with lid for the next day. 😋

I have trouble opening lots of things and it's not a new problem .
I save up things that have to be opened for my neighbour..
I can't open Listerine .
She opened it with ease .
And then closed it.
I can't reopen it and have ended up cutting the top off the bottle and decanting it .
I can't get mayonnaise out of those squeezy bottles .

Some odd comments on here! "No working freezer" -- well, simple solution. "Fish stinks the fridge"? If you don't use all the contents, put them into a plastic storage box - - they come with a tight lid -- and label when you did that. Or use cling film over the original tin, you won't be leaving it weeks, will you? But some interesting points re tin openers.

So, if you need to freeze half a tin of salmon, just buy a freezer. Simples!

Solution 2 only works if you still have the matching lids for your plastic containers and they still fit tightly.

Solution 3 your fridge will still smell of salmon long after the salmon has departed.

Yesterday, in memory of my mum whose birthday it would have been and as a salute to the war and post-war days of my childhood, I decided to open an ancient tin of corned beef. It had the traditional side key. After a struggle at the start not knowing quite which way to turn it, it actually worked! The contents came out easily and tasted good. No additional implements required.

To lever the top off a ring-pull can, I also use the spoon through the ring method but, having bent a few metal spoons, I now use my smallest wooden spoon which neither bends nor breaks.

Lidl have them for 8 pounds.
4 AA batteries included.
Arrived yesterday so may sell out.

To raise ring pulls I keep old milk lids. Force under the ring pull and twist. Much easier than trying to prise it.

I also recommend an electric can opener, easy-peasy!

I too place a lever through the ring and push on the lever. My lever of choice is a wooden spoon and I keep one beside the tins. I often need to prepare the ring by raising it slightly with a knife handle as I don't have strong finger nails.

My old basic can opener that I got as a student still does most things fine, however Fray Bentos Steak and Kidney pies are tricky! I haven't found small tins of salmon a problem with that opener. It must be 50 years old!

I bought an electric can opener for this very reason.....wouldn't be without.

I have a problem opening dog food ring pull cans. So, I put the handle of the metal spoon through the ring and lever the can open. Works every time.

Same, as you say works every time. I do it with all ringpull cans as my twisted fingers won’t fit in the ‘ring’.

Get an electric can opener it opens every size of tin ring pull or not

I'm safer eating tinned salmon. I have a bad reaction to farmed salmon.

I had a fancy can opener which was the most difficult one to use. It was an expensive gift from a friend who liked to splash her cash and felt it must be superior to a standard version. I tried to open a tin of salmon but it got the better of and I threw the thing in the bin and rummaged through my cupboards to find the one I paid £3 from a supermarket, it worked a treat.

Trouble with electric openers one size does not fit all. I was using mine one day on a Fray Bentos pie in a tin. The fit was so bad that two carpet fitters in my house at the time rushed to see what was causing a noise in the kitchen like a car crash .

A chain saw and protective clothing.

I have had an electric upright standing tin opener for decades…. The newer versions are reasonable.
I don’t use it often, but the other day I was trying to wrestle one of those little ‘key’ can openers off a tin of corned beef. It was stuck on so hard that when I eventually prized it off it flew out of my hand and landed somewhere in the kitchen …I still can’t find it… so got out my old electric opener… and it opened with ease…. But then I had to pry it out of the tin!
So I recommend an electric opener. Amazon has some and I’m sure other places too.

I have an invaluable ring can opener, which I couldn't do without. I bought it years ago from Lakeland.

i bought the gadget fleur 20 bought - in fact i bought two!
one lives in the kitchen for cans and the other one lives in the drawer of my coffee table to open any can of cider/lager/beer i fancy without having to go into the kitchen.
i've found them both very useful. no more trying to struggle with opening ring pull cans and, at £1.99, an affordable solution to the problem.
