Trouble opening tin of salmon.

Why not open the big tin, take what you want out, put the rest of the tin contents in a plastic container and put it in the freezer?

Have you ever tried to open a Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie?

I have found that my old fashioned tin opener, like the one below, is still the best after over fifty years.

I feel your pain and frustration Shysal! This happens to me too!

I have several can-openers and it just takes ages to open these small tins!

MOnica-buying a bigger tin and freezing the extra just isn't an option as I don't have a working freezer.

Why sell small cans at all? When you live alone you don't aways want tinned fish making your fridge smell because the lids are difficult to open...

I was looking forward to a tinned salmon and salad sandwich for lunch yesterday. The ring-pull thingummybob came off in my hand and my newish tin opener kept just going round and round the tin. I need to get an old style tin opener. Sometimes the old ways are the best.

Monica, I could use a large tin, but shouldn't have to. Two of my single friends have had the same problem, so it is not just me.

Yes, I have tried to open a Fray Bentos pie, same problem, but the one-handled opener just about managed it!

I have RA in my hands and I was pleased to read a GN recommendation of the ratchet version which works with a backward and forward movement of the lever. it is great!

My newer and fancier tin opener just sits in the drawer because it’s not up to the job. I may as well put it in my charity shop bag. I rarely open a tin anyway.

I’m struggling with my dogs tinned food at the moment. If I use a tea towel sometimes it helps but I sometimes have to resort to using a can opener which isn’t easy when part of it has started to open.

I have a really excellent battery operated can opener - just clip it on to the edge of the tin, press the start button and off you go. No effort needed.

Like crazyH I bought a battery operated can opener. These days I have difficulty opening ring pull cans and the electric can opener copes with these too. Mine came from JML.

JML are an excellent company and have some very useful gadgets including the battery operated tin opener.

I have an electric tin opener, have never been able master any of the others.

You could also try Must Have Ideas. Lots of helpful ( and some not so helpful ) gadgets there.

But if the ring snaps off you're back to square one.
Best to get an electric or battery opener.
They cope with any shape size tin. ring pull or not.

Yes, we've got one of those too. It doesn't always work first time, as some tins are just awkward but it is very good and no effort required.

We have an ordinary one similar to the Good Grips opener just in case the battery fails.

I have tried every type of tin opener, including, hands free and electric, without a doubt this is the best one I have ever bought, it opens every size can with ease. Swing-Way-Opener-Easy-Crank-Handle/ It's got a proper handle that's so asy to use, I can no longer manage to turn the wing type due to arthritis.

Had a similar problem earlier today. Thought I would save money by buying Bird food in a plastic tub. Couldnt get them opened without my industrial size scissors. Now have plasters on two fingers & scrapes on my thumb! Going back to dearer bagged bird food!

i bought the gadget fleur 20 bought - in fact i bought two!
one lives in the kitchen for cans and the other one lives in the drawer of my coffee table to open any can of cider/lager/beer i fancy without having to go into the kitchen.
i've found them both very useful. no more trying to struggle with opening ring pull cans and, at £1.99, an affordable solution to the problem.

I have had an electric upright standing tin opener for decades…. The newer versions are reasonable.
I don’t use it often, but the other day I was trying to wrestle one of those little ‘key’ can openers off a tin of corned beef. It was stuck on so hard that when I eventually prized it off it flew out of my hand and landed somewhere in the kitchen …I still can’t find it… so got out my old electric opener… and it opened with ease…. But then I had to pry it out of the tin!
So I recommend an electric opener. Amazon has some and I’m sure other places too.
